Alta-- I'm SO delighted to find someone connected to that family! Many years ago, probably in the early '70s, I went to Giddings, Texas to meet Billy Barrett who had "The Barrett Family Bible." The Bible had been handed down in his branch of the Barrett family, and he thought it was our line. However, when I looked at it, I realized right away that it was Albert Gallatin's Bible. His family was kind enough to Xerox the family pages for me, and I think this is the copy that's still floating around. I don't know what has happened to the Bible since that time. As to why it passed through John Whitten Barrett's family, the three boys were living with John W. when the war started, and I'm guessing that they just went off and left their things at their uncle's home. The youngest was not old enough to fight in the war, but he married a few years later and died shortly after his marriage. He also left one child behind. Somewhere buried deep in my Barrett records I have the Civil War records for these two older boys. I probably haven't looked at them in 20 years. When I was corresponding with a Whitten researcher, Arthur Reagan, in the 1970s, he went to the National Archives for me and found other related military records that are not filed in the Compiled Service Records. Mitch Vetuski and I spent years trying to find any trace of the children of David and John and the Hill girls. I finally decided that they are going to have to find US, rather than us finding them. I know that Mitch has identified the second marriages for the Hill girls, and at the moment I can't put my fingers on those records. Mitch is out of pocket for the time being, all his records are in storage while he's building his own home. We're so happy that you have found us, hope to hear more from you.
