Tomorrow I plan to order the DAR marker for Reuben's grave. Below are some comments from Marilyn about the approval process and the dedication ceremony. It will take about six to eight weeks to get the marker to the monument company near Greenville. Hopefully it won't take them long to mount the DAR marker on the stone. I believe it should be ready by May 1. It has to be dedicated by Dec. 10, 2004. As she says, we need to suggest a few dates when someone from our group can be there. Hopefully some from the family will be willing to make a brief speech. PLEASE, suggest dates. If you can go and would be willing to make a brief speech please let us know. We want to arrange a date when someone from the family can be there. Rosemary Hayes / Ann Cummings are you out there?? Anyone else within a 100 or 200 miles? Again, we can not thank Marilyn enough for her efforts in making this possible. FYI - we had 37 families make donations for the stone marker and the DAR marker. Donations came from AZ, CA, FL, GA, ID, IL, LA, MS, NC, SC, TX, UT, & VA. I may have received donations at the reunion that I don't have a record of the location of the donor. We were commended by the chapter as well, for the important work and "speedy" results. Apparently we received our approval in record time! The chapter regent did suggest that we contact the Greenville State Regent and request that they organize and preside over the dedication ceremony. Apparently, if it's done at the state level, the event gets more state-wide participation, and each participating chapter is recognized for it. Anyway, to put it bluntly, it looks good for DAR for more chapters to be involved. I will try to find the emails I received in reply last year when I wrote them. What I suggest we do is select a date or range of dates; then I will write to the SC Regent with whom I corresponded previously and request their assistance for the ceremony on that date; also inform them that a member of BARRETT descendants would like to speak as well. Then we can ask for a volunteer to represent the BARRETT family and speak a few words in memorium. If no other BARRETT descendant can attend I will be willing to represent the descendants as well. I'd like to get a survey of statistics, such as the number of known Barrett descendants who participated in this project, number of states in residence, etc. Marilyn
