If Bob Jackson is still lurking on the list, I think he will confirm that his grandfather, Dr. David Jackson, left a legacy of Barrett miscues that will haunt researchers for another hundred years. There is absolutely no evidence that Reuben was ever in Virginia; and Dr. Jackson's professional researcher and Bob himself have not been able to identify this Jackson family as being among any of the Jacksons in Virginia. Without a doubt, Reuben was in Spartanburg District, South Carolina before the war, and there is absolutely nothing to suggest that he left the state at the time of his first daughter's birth, nor that she was somehow raised in Virginia. He was active in acquiring and selling land in Greenville during her childhood, so we know he wasn't in Virginia--and no reason to think Mary was. It also appears that the Jacksons may have arrived in South Carolina before the war. Unless something new has turned up, I think Bob will agree that this whole Virginia myth is something we need to put behind us. Bob, in fact, thinks that his grandfather originally wrote in his manuscript that David and Mary were married in South Carolina, then struck that and wrote "Virginia" over it after visiting one of his distant cousins who lived in another state. Mary's stone, as Janet says, is in the Tyger cemetery near Reuben; and Dr. Jackson is the one who erected it many, many years after his grandmother died. We are grateful to Dr. David Jackson for compiling the story of his family, for preserving a number of old letters as well as many of Reuben's original documents, for contacting and visiting so many of the descendants of David and Mary Jackson and for leaving the records to his descendants. However, we need to be realistic and NOT perpetuate the myths that he left us. It is, of course, possible that Reuben and his brothers and sisters--and possibly their parents--lived in Virginia before arriving in South Carolina. But if they did, it was before the war and before Reuben's marriage to Hannah and before the birth of Mary. And Reuben did NOT migrate to S. C. in the company of his son-in-law, David Jackson, as Dr. Jackson wrote.
