Good morning Alta, This may be a lead for you. I have helped my brother in law look for Hill's for quite a while being that his name is James Ruel Hill and his grandfather was Bithel Hill and was a teamster that traveled back and forth from Tenn. to Tex. in the late 1800's. I saved this a while back and thought the name Tiety may prove to be a clue, but I see now that it is Piety and she was born on the same day as my mother in law. Jan 16th . The Hill name is a hard one to research as also the Parker name. I do not know how accurate this person research was but I would guess this Jane is a sister to your Hill's sisters. I am researching two sons of Albert Gallatin Barrett & Sarah Seaton. David William & John George Barrett married Hill sisters. I would appreciate any information on them, especially their deaths. From the year of deaths listed on your website, it would appear David & John were in the Civil War, but I have not found a record for them. The website has David William Barrett died January 27, 1863 in South Bend, Prairie, AR and John George Barrett died May 10, 1862 in Arkansas. Also, anything on their children will be appreciated: 1. David William Barrett & Elizabeth A. Hill had 2 children... Mary, born ca Apr 1860 Cherokee Co, TX and Alfred born ca 1862 TX. 2. John George Barrett & Mary Hill had one son, John Thomas Barrett born 1861 TX. Note: The Hill sisters were daughters of Benjamin Hill & Piety Bottoms, my gg-grandparents. Thank you for any assistance. Alta Email: aschmer@lakemac.net
Jean, How are your horses doing? Did you ever get that one wild pony trained? I really enjoyed hearing all about your antics with him. Are you still adopting Wild horses? Seems like life always gets in the way of what we would all really like to be doing...researching..but I guess it will always be here for us when we have the time to come back. I have been away from it for quite some time also, but just now finding some time to devote back to it..anyway..welcome back and I look forward to hearing more about your project as I am sure everyone from your line is. I managed to save some pictures from Mom's house after it burned and I have been making the into a scrapbook for her. I noticed at Walmart they have a whole series of "Family Heritage" scrapbooking accessories. They are beautiful and sounds like they would work with what you are working on, if you wanted to "fancy" your pages up. Hugs, Janet
Jean, Hello!!!!!!! It is so nice to see you back on the list. It has been awhile since we have talked. It sounds like a fun job you are undertaking, and I know it will be treasured for generations to come. Drop me a line and let me know how you have been. Hugs, Janet
Janet- Good to be back. Got a little frustrated several years ago . . . brick walls on multiple family trees, I changed email addresses, my computer crashed, and I had several other irons in the fire: brand new grandbabies, young horses to train, a new job. So my hobbies went by the wayside. But am so happy to be back! Thanks, Jean On Sun, 15 Feb 2004 15:37:06 EST CHenry8604@aol.com writes: > Jean, > Hello!!!!!!! Thank you for the welcome, Jim. Actually I am a returning member, but I have been out of the loop for several years. I was posting under an aol address of "pennr", and about the time I changed email addresses (and computers) I dropped off of most of my lists. My line: Reuben Arthur William Grant Thomas Caradine John Hamilton Hermina Mae myself Currently I am taking my collection of family photos and putting them on CD . . . complete with backgrounds, music, etc, for my family. I already have on file most of the photos that are on the website, as different ones of you had graciously emailed them to me in the past. If anyone has any visuals of interest related to this line, I would really appreciate including them. And I will take anything in the way of photos: photos of grave stones, photos of old documents, photos of a dip in the cow pasture where the old homestead once stood! (My husband's family seemed to be more fond of taking pics of people in coffins than of living ones, with his line the photos of headstones and bodies outnumbers the photos of people!) I have also discovered a couple of Barrett cousins where I work, I believe they are from the Reuben-Arthur-Quincy Caradine branch, and I will be trying to get more information from them, also. Nice to be back. Thanks, Jean Rowell Hattiesburg, MS
I'd like to welcome our newest family member to our mail list. She is Jean Rowell. I'm sure she'll be posting soon to let all of us know about her line. Welcome Jean. Jim Barrett Bedford, TX
Karen, Thanks so much for the update on Mitch. It has been a long time since I had talked to him also. It is good to know that he is doing well. Love you, Janet

HI, All-- Just thought I'd make a report on Mitch Vetuski, our elusive Texas cousin who worked with me so closely on Barrett research for so many years--well actually, he's much closer kin to Janet than to me. I tried sending him two e-mails recently, but they came back; the last e-mail I got from him was probably six or eight months ago. And no one having heard from him for a long time, I finally decided to take matters into my own hands and chase him down. I knew that he was building his own home (physically, brick by brick) somewhere near Wimberly after having retired from the Houston fire department. Through Anywho.com, I found two of his daughters; I called the one living in Austin, and she gave me his phone number near Wimberly, actually closer to San Marcos. Mitch is STILL building that house! His computer is stored at his son's house, and he is still working daily on his house and doing no research at all. He said that he finally finished installing his kitchen cabinets yesterday. He and Penny have been living in the house for several months without a kitchen. He said they both like their new home and especially like the dryer climate of the Hill Country. Mitch still has a great handle on all the families we used to work on together. He will get back to working in the family history as soon as he has more of the house completed. He said he will probably take a job of some sort once he is finished building the house, but should have time to join us at that time. He knew about the S. C. reunion, and kept up with what was happening with Barretts until they moved out of their apartment and into the new house. Just thought you'd like to know. Karen
This a really good idea, After my father in law died ( four year before I met my husband) my mother in law remarried and her new husband took all the old pictures and papers and set them in the alley. Had my brother in law and sister in law not been driving thur the alley to come around to the front they would have never seen them there to save things dating back to the late eighteen hundreds. I am not sure how this got turned around, although believe me I need all the help I can get most of the time. This originated from a posting from Rachelle when she was looking for James Barrett and Katie Bonds. Well actually her ancestor is America his second wife, Thanks loads to everyone who offered to help me with the census. It took some time but I think I pretty much have it down now. Rachelle may still need some help though. I wish I had asked a long time ago though a question that would have saved me time. I use to go to the census and the person would not be there. I didn't realize for a long time that they are made up of two pages. Dah!!!! Any way thanks again Deb -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: <CHenry8604@aol.com> To: <BARRETT-REUBEN-SC-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 09, 2004 6:56 PM Subject: Re: [Barrett-Reuben-SC] Samuel Barrett's born in NC > In a message dated 1/26/04 10:21:15 PM Central Standard Time, > ewebiggs.deb@verizon.net writes: > > > I'm gonna have to get familiar with the census' meanings. Hello All, I know this is something we all don't like to talk about, but I think it is a good idea for someone to add this codical to their will, I have added it to mine: A Genealogical Codicil to My Last Will and Testament To my spouse, children, or guardian. Upon my demise it is requested that you DO NOT dispose of any of my Genealogical records, books, files, notebooks or computer programs for a period of two years. During this time period, please attempt to find one or more persons who would be willing to take custody of the said materials and the responsibility of maintaining and continuing the family histories. In the event you do not find anyone to accept these materials, please contact the genealogical organizations that I have been a member of to determine if they will accept some parts or all of my genealogical materials. WOW Karen!! You have the very best stories! I feel so encouraged! Good job and do NOT stop researching! Sheryn W,
Hi, Janet-- Welcome back! You are right, I stay far over on my side! I went into your files once looking to see if I could figure out how you did a certain html code, and I felt like a criminal! Since then, I've searched out the free websites that tell how to do things I needed or wanted to do. I'm so proud of myself to figure these things out on my own without bothering you! And I want to thank you again for all your help during my dunce period! Doing the site has been a really educational experience in so many ways. I can hardly begin to list everything I've learned, in the technical aspect of doing it, in Civil War history, and about the families who lived in Montgomery County, Texas at that time. And now, All, I have just had an interesting experience that may be worth mentioning. A distant cousin who is the descendant of my Civil War Captain Wooldridge (and a distant cousin on the Viser/McCan line) sent me 6 old photos that his sister had saved from their mother's things. She had them down in Mexico where she is retired in an American enclave. I used the book "Dating Old Photographs" by Halvor Moorstead, and did a lot of Googling looking for the studios whose names were stamped on the rear of two of the photos. The photos all turned out to be among the earliest CDV's (Carte de Visite) made, and were all from the 1860s. We are positive one of the photos is Captain Wooldridge, and I am putting the iimage on the bio page for Capt. Wooldridge. One of the photos was made by a studio in Providence, R. I, and was a tiny image of Jefferson Davis pasted in an ornate embossed "frame." I found several similar photos made by the same studio offered for sale to collectors, and they were asking from $250 to $400 for them! I'm sure the Jefferson Davis (president of the Confederacy) photo was in the family collection because of the fact that Capt. Wooldridge fought under him in the Mexican War, in the First Mississippi Regiment. Sorry to take up Barrett space rattling on about these, but I want everyone to know that it IS possible to date the old photos, sometimes within a year or two of when they were made. Having the originals in hand is of utmost importance, so that you can measure the size and thickness and see the corners of the cards that the photos were pasted to. And the name of the studio, if any, is a major clue. Just remember NEVER to touch the images themselves, handle on the edges. Even when our hands are clean, we have oils on them that can cause damage to the photos. Our Barrett's who went to Tn were in Fayette Co, TN. They only stayed a few years and then came to Texas. The Hawkins Co, TN Barrett's are descendants of James Barrett if my memory serves me right. Janet
Kristie, Thank you for sharing!! Hugs, Janet
Hallie, Thanks for replying, maybe I should put a list of people who are registered under Reuben's name on the website. If those of you who are a member of DAR under Reuben can contact me in private e-mail, I will start a list and make a page for the site. BTW, I hope all is well with you and yours... Hugs, Janet
