Hi Janet, I sent Sandra a note telling her how to start with DAR and that I would be happy to help her. Reuben would be a great entry. Patricia Randolph Crawford
Isn't there a preservative sold at craft places like Michaels,or Ben Franklins that could be used on a scrap book? Or why couldn't a place like Kinko's or UPS or any place that does large volume of printing be asked for tips on how to preserve something that precious? Could it be carefully disassembled and each page scanned or perhaps a large library might have some good info how to preserve and store old documents. Just a few suggestions. Jean, I really wish your Aunt Grace would let someone archive the scrapbooks, that kind of stuff doesn't last forever and someday it will be lost to decay. I understand it is falling apart already so would be hard to photocopy. Karen explained to me that there is a way that you can photograph each page so that you can see it clearly, maybe that would be a good way to do it. Of course it would also have to be transcribed and with 6 volumes that would be a major undertaking! To bad the stories she told with each article went with her..those would be so fun to hear!! Hugs, Janet

I told her about the list and hopefully she will take her place with her family. It is always so good to hear from new descendants. I know we have others from this direct line who are closely related to Sandra. I will get her data she sent for the website up as soon as I can. I have included her letter to me. Hugs, Janet Dear Janet, I am a descendent of Lenora Barrett, through her son Andrew Jackson Hembree. I am sending an attatchment of some of her descendents through my side of the family and what little I know of Daniel Wallace Hembree's side of the family. Would you be able to add this to the web page? Would I need to write it up differently? I'll be glad to change its form if you wish. Do you know if any of the Barrett descendents have joined the DAR, by way of being a descendent of Reuben Barrett? I am planning to do so and would really appreciate and help I could get in that direction. Thanks so much! Sandra Hembree Hillman Sansassy@aol.com
Don't know whether my grandmother knew any of these Barretts (they were not our direct kin), or just clipped the article because of the name. I was under the impression growing up in the 60's that the only Barretts we knew were in either Lamar or Neshoba county, and no one had had any contact with them for years. My grandmother's scrapbooks are a snapshot of the times, the 20's, 30's and 40's. She clipped articles on births, deaths, marriages, social functions and high school graduations etc of all her friends and relatives, some of which she hand wrote the year beside, but you don't know the date or even what paper it came from. There are recipes, poems, cartoons, movies stars, and advertisements she thought was interesting. War news, politics, local disasters. And everyonce in a while you come across a gem or a tidbit of information. Newsprint glued into coarse scrapbook pages with musilage (I think that is the glue) . . . or taped with cellophane tape, well, it is a crumbly dry stinky mess that you don't want to fool with if you have allergies! Anyway, below is an newspaper article from 1992 about my grandmother's scarpbooks. My Aunt Grace has custody of the scrapbooks, and lets only a few go through them because they are falling apart so bad. Sun Herald, The (Biloxi, MS) January 29, 2002 Section: NATION & WORLD Edition: TSH Page: C3 SUN HERALD MEMORY BANK BY JIMMIE BELL The Sun Herald 1914 --- Handsboro a rainbow of memories for Lena Barrett Mrs. Lena Barrett of Handsboro began keeping a scrapbook of clippings from throughout the South that mentioned either Handsboro (which would be annexed by Gulfport in 1966) or the Mississippi Coast. By the mid-1950s, her project of cut-and- paste had grown to six volumes --- births, deaths and highlights of many people she had never met. And from this rainbow-colored world, Mrs. B. delighted in telling the stories behind the clippings. One concerned an old hand-pump car, said to be one of the first five automobiles in the town of Handsboro. It seems that one day the owner drove his flashy rig "all the way to Biloxi and sold it for $5 --- cash on the barrel head." Sun Herald Memory Bank archives are researched and compiled by retired staff writer Jimmie Bell, whose reporting career at The Daily Herald and The Sun Herald spanned 30 years. Jimmie Bell is editor of Bell's Letters poetry magazine, published in Gulfport. E-mail, jimbelpoet@aol.com. I wrote Jimmie Bell, and here is his reply: Hi, Jean -- Thanks for reading Memory Bank. I'm delighted to finally hear that someone read my favorite story. Lena Barrett's home was open house to her daughter Grace and the folks with whom Grace worked at The Daily Herald in the 40s and 50s. We had a few chaperoned parties there with the Martinoliches and Satchfields. Lena was such a nice (then white-haired) lady, and I enjoyed hearing her tell of the stories she had accumulated for her scrapbooks. . .I was a reporter for The Herald, and Grace was a bookkeeper. I think Grace's sister's name was Mimi. Would you be Mimi's daughter or Grace's? I never heard from any of the family after the article first appeared, so I wasn't sure if they even saw it. Hence, your e-mail cheered me up considerably. Yes, I remember your grandfather well. They lived on Pass Road before it became big-city. Next door to Bill Streiff's TV repair shop. Your granddad had the best homespun sense of humor. I can see him now standing in front of his house telling funny stories and being nice to laugh at the mediocre ones I told. He always made me feel welcome. So nice to hear from you -- and especially nice to know there is an archives on the internet. I didn't know about that. I knew there was a daily reprint of my articles. So I'll have to pay more attention to this on-line stuff. Best to you and your family. Janet, I think Its best to be as it is. Maybe someone will be kind enough to help with the website. You have worked too hard and devoted too much time, effort and love into this Barrett family to see it corrupted from erroneous data. I definitely appreciate what you have done for Our Barrett Heritage. Much love , Gaye
I agree with Jim. If everyone can add and substract info, it may get to be a big mess. Pat Crawford
If there is no control over who can change what I believe you would be opening the web site up for total disaster. It would be bad enough just with members of the group. A simple error could delete a lot of information. But let's look at a worse case. What happens if a person who is mean enough to develop and send out a virus, but isn't smart enough, finds the site and just to be mean they start deleting information. That's not bad enough, they start adding information of the type that shouldn't be on a web site. I'm sure keeping the web site up is a huge job, but I don't think going from full (almost) control to no control is the answer. I think the best bet is to find someone in each family group to work on that families page. If no one from a give group will accept their family page, maybe you can find someone from another group who will do it. If not that family's page stops growing. No, I wasn't volunteering. There are several programs that don't require HTML to design web pages. All people need to do is look around a little. I am going to check with freepages to see if I can use it on their pages since they are free (the program is also free). An example would be, say you open Joseph Barrett's website and you see where there is a mistake, all you would have to do is click an edit button and change the error, then click save, no html is involved. We could all add our own research. We could just add the date and our name and source when we add data.

It has a search engine in it and creates links on each page if there is another page with the same word. A great example for everyone to see would be to go to Wikipedia (just put that word in your browser) and see how it works. Please let me know what everyone thinks about this idea, as the website is getting so big, this would be a great alternative and everyone could help. Hugs, Janet Wikis are web sites that anyone can edit without knowing anything about web sites...just click that little edit button at the bottom of the page, type, use some simple punctuation if you like (e.g. for bold and italics), and press save--you have an updated web site anyone can access and change themselves. Wikis are used internally by the New York Times, Library of Congress, and many other organizations around the world. The concept also made possible the wikipedia, which hosts hundreds of thousands of entries of amazing quality, often surpassing professional publications, and all closely crosslinked. Now just as email, the World Wide Web, and Instant Messanger took some time to rise from the Internet, make it more usable, and be generally accepted, the concept of the wiki has just recently come to light. The concept takes some getting used to. You should feel completely free to fix, upgrade, and expand any entry which doesn't seem quite right. You can even create new entries without limit.

Janet-- Very nice! A section on Elise's work will be of interest to many; it is good to honor her for all her diligent research on her Reuben Barrett line. Hello All, I have added quite a few pages and updates to the website in the last month. I added a new section in researchers for Elise Massey Shepard today. Her brother sent me a picture of her in January for a page for her. If you would like to see it it is at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~barrettbranches/Researchers/Elise%20Shepard/index.html I will be adding excerpts from her book soon as well as a biography on her. Hugs, Janet
