    1. [Barrett-Reuben-SC] Question
    2. Hallie Johnson
    3. Last week I learned that the grandmother of an acquaintance of mine was Myrtle Effie Barrett. She was born in 1890 in Madison, MS Her father, Bennie Clinton Barrett, was born Sep 1850 in Attala Co., MS He was married 1st to Mollie A. Yaggar. A known son of Bennie and Mollie was Reuben Thomas Barrett born 1875 in Attala Co., MS He married 2nd Elizabeth Self. Bennie and Elizabeth are the parents of Myrtle Effie Barrett. They also had other children. Does anyone have any knowledge of this group of Barretts? I am wondering if they are related as they lived in the same counties as our Mississippi Barretts. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Hallie Johnson

    1. [Barrett-Reuben-SC] Question
    2. Ross Welburn
    3. Has anyone ever found a Talmadge Quitman Barrett (or Quitman Talmadge), born about 1910-1920 apx.? I would like to know where he fits into our Barretts. His son called my brother and asked him if he knew. The call was based on similarity of names as the caller, Gary Lynn Barrett, telephoned Gary Leon Barrett. Turns out they are the same age, 57 yrs. We are remodeling, yes construction!!! So my genealogy is put away for awhile and my search on Ancestry.com did not reveal anything new on these names. Any answers would be appreciated! Thank you. 3. Good Morn Karen and family, I always love going through all your research and reading about the history of our soldiers. It is so sad that so many died so young, but as I explained to my grandson . He asked one time "maw maw do I have ancestors"? I had to laugh a little on that one."Did I have a relative die at the Alamo,,why did so many really died at the Alamo,do people just like to fight"? I told him no people don't really like to fight and loose their loved ones to battle but it is just like the war we are in right now, there are people out there that can't stand the word freedom. They want to rule people and tell them what they can and can't do. He said well you tell me what I can and can't do. Boy ,,can't argue with an 8 year old. Anyway I asked him if I was evil and he said no way and I said the ones who want to hurt our people and control them usually are. I told him If we had not made a stand at the Alamo ,Texas would be Mexico. Then he said well I sure don't want to be Iraq. I had to hug him for a good minute to keep from crying. As far as the Parker notes and such,Cynthia said this is an old trunk that her father left her. She was only 17 when he died and like so many a few years go by and you start wondering who are these people in these pictures. Old newspaper clippings and an old notebook which now after I told her it may be a hand written copy of a bible or family ledger she agreed. Ewell's g grand father was a brother to her g g grandfather. She lives 20 miles from Brownsville,TN so she is going to start hitting some of the libraries in the area and cemeteries. Her descendants name was James Richard Parker ,they called him Jim. For a while I have wondered if the John R. that married Mary Polly middle name was Richard. The name Richard kept popping up in a few counties in that era. As you,Jim and Janet pointed out census are just a good source to use as a guideline but not acurate some times. Could be that John R. came out of the Carolina's as did my husband's side. I will keep you updated on any information she finds. When she gets her scannner repaired or replaced she will send me what she can. She is going to donate most it to the library so it doesn't deteriate any more than it already has. I do believe the oldest letter we have in the family is dated 1881 and Ewell's cousin in Goliad had it sealed in some kind of plexy glass or something. I told her to be very careful, I would rather obtained it from the library after it had been preserved verves her damage it with the bright light of a scanner. We are scheduling a Parker reunion in Tennessee for Easter 2005 so I hope I find some answers and possible the connection if any. I told hubby he could takes his golf clubs if he will let me do all the research I want and he said Good Trade. That is one of my favorite parts on Dances with Wolves, where he lost his hat and one of the Indians picked it up after the hunt. 3. If Bob Jackson is still lurking on the list, I think he will confirm that his grandfather, Dr. David Jackson, left a legacy of Barrett miscues that will haunt researchers for another hundred years. There is absolutely no evidence that Reuben was ever in Virginia; and Dr. Jackson's professional researcher and Bob himself have not been able to identify this Jackson family as being among any of the Jacksons in Virginia. Without a doubt, Reuben was in Spartanburg District, South Carolina before the war, and there is absolutely nothing to suggest that he left the state at the time of his first daughter's birth, nor that she was somehow raised in Virginia. He was active in acquiring and selling land in Greenville during her childhood, so we know he wasn't in Virginia--and no reason to think Mary was. It also appears that the Jacksons may have arrived in South Carolina before the war. Unless something new has turned up, I think Bob will agree that this whole Virginia myth is something we need to put behind us. Bob, in fact, thinks that his grandfather originally wrote in his manuscript that David and Mary were married in South Carolina, then struck that and wrote "Virginia" over it after visiting one of his distant cousins who lived in another state. Mary's stone, as Janet says, is in the Tyger cemetery near Reuben; and Dr. Jackson is the one who erected it many, many years after his grandmother died. We are grateful to Dr. David Jackson for compiling the story of his family, for preserving a number of old letters as well as many of Reuben's original documents, for contacting and visiting so many of the descendants of David and Mary Jackson and for leaving the records to his descendants. However, we need to be realistic and NOT perpetuate the myths that he left us. It is, of course, possible that Reuben and his brothers and sisters--and possibly their parents--lived in Virginia before arriving in South Carolina. But if they did, it was before the war and before Reuben's marriage to Hannah and before the birth of Mary. And Reuben did NOT migrate to S. C. in the company of his son-in-law, David Jackson, as Dr. Jackson wrote. 3. Hello Janet, I am not really sure where she got her info, it is notes I made in Feb of 2002. When our new found Parker cousin e mailed me with the JR and Parker information I told her due to health issues I am not actively doing any research but I would look over what I had. When I pulled out the 1850 census on David's daughter I had never really noticed the Georgia listing. When I went to the Reuben notes I found this one where she had a birth date for Reuben. When I found your web site you told me there was no proof and I have never really pursued it. I am sure the Jackson researchers may like to contact her. Thanks for the heads up. 3. Deb-- This DOES sound suspicious. John R. and Polly's first child was David Henry Parker, and we know from old records that he was called "Henry." I would be amazed if notes from 1845 (the year the Parkers came to Houston County Tx. from Fayette Co., Tn.) still exist, but stranger things have happened. It's of course possible that someone made notes from an old letter or a diary. I have biographical sketches of both Henry Parker and of his half-brother, James McCarley, on my web pages (on Barrett Branches) concerning the Civil War history of Capt. Wooldridge's companies. Here is the URL for Henry Parker, and you can get to James McCarley from this page by clicking on his name. Be sure the whole URL is copied into your browser; if it isn't all highlighted, you will have to copy and paste. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~barrettbranches/Researchers/ Karen%20Hett/biographies/henryparker.html I think it's worth following up on, Deb, as the names certainly are right. As far as Mary being born in Georgia, we think David and family lived in Greenville until they left for Tennessee; there's always the outside possibility that they went over to Georgia to check it out, but came back home to S. C. Never say never. More likely, the Parkers were not home on the day the census taker came; he was required to get the information from a neighbor when the family was not at home--he was not going to be paid for going back to the house another day. That's the reason you often find some wild ages and birth places on census records. Let us know what else you can find out from that branch of Parkers. 2. Jean Rowell
    3. Two years ago, my nieces from California came to visit, and Aunt Grace let us take a couple of boxes of "scrapbook" material off for the weekend. I am surprised she didn't make us leave a deposit. Just kidding, she really takes guardianship of this stuff serious. I worked at a copy machine place at the time, and we copied what we could. But like I said, there is so much non-genealogy and non-history junk pasted in there . . recipes, movie star scandals, war news . . . most of the deaths/births/social events revolve around just the family and the small community of Handsboro MS (which is now Gulfport . . Harrison County) . . . and a lot of it is just the article cut and pasted with no dates, no paper name, etc. One neice took pics with a digital camera. I have been trying so hard to infect her with the genealogy bug. My aunt is rapidly approaching 80. If there is anyone that would like to talk to her, in relation to Barrett, Schmitt, Jessen, Hardtner, Reinke, Streiff (I am trying so hard to remember all the collateral lines and the local Handsboro, MS families and business owners at the turn of the last century: Martinolich, Leger, Fant, Switzer, Loposser, DelMas) . . . anyway, she would be ok with people calling her, but I would need to ask her first, then give her phone number to whomever is interested, and let her know they are calling. She is kinda old, you know. We are descended from the Thomas C. Carradine line (he is buried in Handsboro) he was son of William Grant Barrett. There are several Barretts in Lamar County that Aunt Grace remembers visiting as a young girl. . . . I am thinking Quincy Carradine Barrent descendants and Benjamin Bird Barrett descendants. I now live in Forrest County, right next to Lamar, and have been uncovering some of these descendants as time goes on. . . . Anyway, as far as my old aunt's memory goes, here is a tidbit she gave me several years ago: she remembers going to Purvis as a young child (she is close to 80), to attend a relative's funeral. She thinks it was Burton Barrett. She said, the wake was at the family home, and they had the casket set up in one of the big rooms, for visitation. And Burton's hunting dog, got into the house, and wedged himself under the casket, and refused to be moved, so they just left him there, because they thought it was fitting, that a man's dog would want to stay by him. Burton was born in 1871 Neshoba County- that and Aunt Grace's memories are all I have on him. Later, Jean On Wed, 17 Mar 2004 14:37:39 EST CHenry8604@aol.com writes: > Jean, > I really wish your Aunt Grace would let someone archive the > scrapbooks, that > kind of stuff doesn't last forever and someday it will be lost to > decay.
