    3. Hello to all, I am looking for any descendants of my gGrandfather David Hamilton Barrett (b: 3/13/1829 d: 8/05/1916) currently living in the Neshoba County area. My desire is to find someone who may have some knowledge of where my Grandmother Francis Elizabeth Barrett Morris is buried. She married my Grandfather Robert Washington Morris abt. 1876 in Neshoba County. I am hoping that some of her sibling's descendant's are still living in the area & may know the location of her resting place. I have researched the available information at the Neshoba County Library & the New Hope Baptist Church minuets from 1839 - 1912, with the help & assistance of Theresa Ridout & Janelle Yates but without success. The best we can determine is that she died between 1901- 1904 in Neshoba County. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I am also looking for information regarding the grave location of my gGrandfather Washington Morris d: 11/02/1872 & gGrandmother Margaret Hughey Morris d: about 1886 both in Neshoba County. I will be traveling through Neshoba County in August on my way to attend the annual Morris reunion in Walkertown, NC. I have hit the preverbal brick wall on this. Please help if you can. 3. Jim-- I would love it if you would expand on this a bit. Please tell where you were living, why you were at the grandparents, the names of your parents, etc. Just some details to further the story. I would very much like to use it on my page. I am working on it this morning, trying to find appropriate patriotic backgrounds and pictures, bars, etc. Finding a balance between pretty backgrounds and being able to read the text is a problem. Glenn sent me a really wonderful story, which he has given me permission to paste here. I am just so delighted to have it! It will be a great addition to the page. Jim, I also don't remember anything much about the war, other than Mother using red and blue tokens at the grocery store. I have letters that Mother and Daddy wrote to each other when Daddy left to take a job at Dow Chemical, so I do know that Mother was SO worried about him being drafted. As many of you know, I facilitate a memoir writing class and have taught memoir writing at "Senior University" here in Georgetown; it is a non-profit organization for education of senior adults, non-credit. The point is not to worry about wording, punctuation, etc., just get it down on paper! I will edit a bit if necessary, for example, correct typos, divide into paragraphs for easier viewing, etc. If you don't like my editing, I welcome your corrections or comments. Here is Glenn's story: ----- Karen,     On December 7, 1941 I was 9 years old. My Dad was a member of the CCC Camp building the Percy Quinn State Park, located between McComb & Liberty, MS. That day, I was playing on a old tire swing in the front yard of the house & Dad was listening to an old Philco radio, which was powered by a car battery. I do remember that when the announcement was made we all gathered around trying to hear & grasp every word before the battery would run out of power & go dead.  I also remember asking my Dad if he would be "Going to War". He said he was 46 years old but "if they need me I will go". He was not called up, but I remember his leaving to work "in the War effort" on the riverfront in New Orleans. During that time housing was extremely scarce but we were fortunate enough to get a house in a Wartime Housing Project where we lived throughout the war years.     My fondest memories during those war years was my Mother telling me to put on my roller skates & go to several neighborhood grocery because they had received a shipment of sugar, flour, butter or some other rationed items & she had some ration coupons that could be redeemed for the items. Every once in a while there would be Nylon Stockings that Mother would want me try to get. I remember getting some funny stares from the women who were there also.     Those war years was a time of pride & prayers for our country, a time of fear for the lives of loved ones serving, of joy when they came home, but the stress when they left, for it could have been the last time you ever saw them. But through it all it was a time of family closeness & pulling together as a nation. If only we had that same commitment today.   Your Cuz in Texas       Glenn Morris Bedford, TX On Jun 26, 2004, at 8:00 AM, BARRETT-REUBEN-SC-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > For some reason, I don't remember anything about the bombing of Pearl > Harbor. 3. Hi Gang, I remember December 7, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. My brother, H. C., and I were at a ritual practice of Reagan Chapter of the Order of Demolay on that Sunday afternoon. One of the boys went down to his car and turned the radio on. The only broadcast was about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. All of the members of Reagan Chapter were either drafted or volunteers in all of the branches of service. We lost several during WWII. I was drafted into the U. S. Navy in January 1943 and saw service aboard the USS Cleveland, light cruiser from the consolidation of the Solomn Islands to the end of the war and the occupation of Japan. Please dont get me started. Bud, H. C., was a photographer in the 67th Special CBs. He was in the 4th wave landing on the island of Tinian in the Mariana Islands. I was offshore on the Cleveland lobbing 6" and 5" shells over the troops heads. I have quite a story about Siapan and Tinian Islands. One of Bud's CB mates became a History Prof. at the University of Maine. This Prof. wrote a history of the island of Tinian and made a video tape titled "The Thunder From Tinian". Bud furnished many pictures to the Prof. and was given credit for the pictures. This video was published just before Bud died. I would like to get permission to copy this video to DVD. The tape is copyrighted and permission must be granted before I would even try to copy it. Enough for now. Love you all Yours in Christ, Jack L. 3. You know I asked my Meme what she remembers about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Her answer was, "Not much. We lived in the country and there was no radio. The closest neighbor was miles away, so it took a few days to find out." Then I asked her about other wars in her lifetime b/c there are many. Korea, Vietnam, The Gulf War, and now Iraq or Operation Freedom. She remembers those. I did not know for those that are taking these "Memories" down if they would be interested in those kind of memories too. The Men and Women that served or that can remember WWII or dying at about ( I believe the statistics are) 1,000 per day. That is alot. I know the older generation can tell us more about WWII, Korea, etc...than any text book. They lived through or where born during the Great Depression. As my Meme says,"What was so great about it I have no idea." So maybe we can find out about what else they know or are willing to share. This is just a thought I had. I have many sometimes I just forget to share. LOL! I hope this did not sound like I was mad or anything b/c I am not. Just sentimental. I have only 1 grandparent left out of 4. So I think for my personal use b/c she is not a Barrett or a McCan (She is from my mom's side) I will ask her for more memories. Some are good and some are bad. Just depends on which ones you ask about. LOL! Well I hope everyone has a great weekend. I am trying to clean for a baby shower for a real good friend of mine. I will ask for those of you who pray please pray for our friends.(Pat and Angela) They do not have a clus about babies. While y'all are praying if you do not mind praying for me and Zac we are trying to get pregnant and we have a few obstacles to go through. Lots of love and affection. 3. Hi, Cousins. Mary P. sent me the most wonderful story of her memories of first hearing about Pearl Harbor. I do appreciate it so much! I am going to make a page on McCann Kin for the memoirs written by my cousins, and will post it on that page. First, however, I want to share it with you. This is her account of history in the making! Karen ----- MEMORIES OF PEARL HARBOR DECEMBER 7, 1941 BY MARY P. I was thirteen years old, living in Port Barre, Louisiana, with my father Clarence Barrett and my mother, Gertie Barrett. On December 7, 1941, I was in the 8th grade and was at my friend Doris Beauxis' home. We were playing some kind of game on their living room floor. Her dad was in an easy chair reading a newspaper, and the radio was on; an announcer broke into the music and said, "The Japanese have just bombed Pearl Harbor." "We are at war!" Mr Beauxis said "Where is Pearl Harbor? And I, being good in geography, said, "It's in Hawaii." I ran home to tell my parents and they were as shocked as everyone: stunned, and amazed. After the war started, like all towns and cities all over America, a War effort was started: Rationing, Gas Stamps, Newspaper drives, etc. Wonder of all wonders, Port Barre, whose Bayou Catabala cut it in half, was selected as a training ground for Black Troops. They were posted on guard duty over the one bridge that spanned the dirty bayou. We children who had to go to school almost two miles away on the other side of the bridge were frightened, yet curious about all these men in green uniforms, carrying rifles, and full gear. Suppose the Government thought the Nazi's and the Japanese were going to sneak into the United States via the Atchafayla River and Wetlands and capture South Louisiana. After all we were only fifty miles from Baton Rouge, and a hundred or less from New Orleans!

    3. Karen, I'm glad to hear you got DSL. I got it right after the reunion last year and I love it. We'll be watching for your new web space. While we were in Georgia this year Lee Barrett gave me some information on the David Barton Barrett family. Those of you who attended the reunion last year should remember Lee. Jan and I ate dinner with Lee and his wife this year. We really missed out when he didn't bring her to the reunion last year. Lee descends from David, son of Arthur and Nancy Barton Barrett. A couple of interesting point I found in this material: 1) David Elwood Barrett, son of David, served as District Judge of Cooke, Denton, and Montague Counties, Texas for 25 years. He had 9 children, all born in Gainesville, TX which is where he died and is buried. I'm trying to learn the name of the cemetery. One of David Elwood's sisters, Mary Rebecca Barrett, had several children connected to North Texas. A great grandchild of Mary, Irma E. Hodges, was killed in the March 18, 1937 gas explosion that destroyed the junior/senior high school at New London, TX. Some 300 people killed. For those of you who don't know about this disaster do a Google search for "New London" & Explosion, there are several well do web sites . This site http://www.nlse.org/ has a "Those Who Died" tab which takes you to a list of those killed, with an additional link to pictures. Our cousin, Irma, must have been a senior. There were three students and one adult named Barrett. I have no record of them being kin to us. Jim Barrett Bedford, TX

    3. Dear Gang: Well, I've had DSL for 2 days, and I'm like a kid in a candy store! Unfortunately, it's with Verizon and already things are "wrong." they did not enclose the CD, so I can't set up e-mail accounts, and one of my phones doesn't respond to the filter. Anyway, I have not heard from anyone for ages, so assuming nobody is posting to the list. Also, I understand that Janet's computer is out of commission, so nothing from her. Here is something I just found. This URL will get you to a printable map showing Burrows (Barrett/Burroughs, etc.) Cemetery. That's where our Barretts are buried in Madison County, Texas. Also--all the other cemeteries in Madison County are listed. They are USGS maps and very good, with mileage scales, etc. http://landmark.granbury.com/madison.htm And if you haven't checked out the Madison County web pages lately (you Texas cousins), they are really improved! One other thing to report is that I have learned how to re-jigger my scanner settings to reverse the color. That might not seem important, but here's the deal. The David Barrett 1826 letter is still in private hands (we hope, at least that it's still in existence) somewhere in Mississippi, owned by Whitten family descendants. In the early 70s, Arthur Reagan (whose research is now owned by William B. Moore) sent me a xerox of a photostat of that 1826 letter. A photostat was the only type of copying that was available before Xerox-type machines. It was a type of photographic process in which the black and white were reversed. Therefore, a photostat comes out white on black, rather than black on white. (That explanation was for you young folks.) My dad's photography studio had the only photostat machine (outside of the title company) in our little home town, so one of his tasks was making copies of documents for townsfolk. All these years, that xerox of a photostat of the 1826 letter has been languishing in a binder, with holes punched in it, no less!!! (Yes, I was pretty dumb.) Consider that this letter was probably written with pokeberry juice rather than India ink, and that the paper had yellowed terribly over the 140 years from 1826 to the 1960s, when Mr. Reagan photostated it. Therefore, there was little contrast in the photostat. Then, in the early 70s, he copied it for me in an early Xerox machine. And that copy has also faded. So, we are looking at a pale gray background with some white splotches on it--the writing. After many hours fixing and refixing the settings on my Epson scanner, I was able to make scans that, if you have persistence, will allow you to read David's original handwriting! I should have done all the pages at once, but I put them away "for the weekend." A week passed, meanwhile I cleaned out my desk drawer. So, when I went back to scan the other pages, I had thrown away the notes that I took on my scanner settings! I had to start all over trying to figure out what I had done! The sheets were very long, like legal size. So, I had to copy the bottom of the page separately. Janet told me before her computer crashed that she could put them together for me. However, that project is on hold until she surfaces again. When we do get them put together, I will be excited to put them on the Barrett pages, so everyone can see them. The other news is that I have reserved Freepages space for myself, under the name of McCann Kin (mccannkin). I haven't put much on it, yet, just a little bit of "stuff" on the Visers. I haven't told many people, but I suppose Google will find the pages eventually and I'll be embarrassed to have such poorly constructed pages. So, that's all the news from here. I hear from Cousin Don, and I know Hallie's alive, though I haven't heard from her directly for several weeks. Deb has just flat disappeared. Even Jim is quiet. No cemetery hunting, lately, Jim? Oh, by the way, if any of you (Deb?) have a photo of James McCan's stone at the Burroughs Cemetery, I would very much appreciate having a copy. I forgot my camera last year. I'm sure this message will take up a whole bunch of space, and maybe we'll get a digest! Greetings to all! Kuz Karen

    1. Fw: Remember Pat Boone?
    2. H. Glenn Morris
    3. NewsMax Monday, May 24, 2004 Recently, entertainer Pat Boone wrote NewsMax editor Christopher Ruddy a letter regarding his feelings on Abu Ghraib and Iraq, the contents of which are published here with permission: Mr. Christopher Ruddy Editor, NewsMax Dear Chris, Hasn't anybody got the guts to accuse the worst perpetrator in this whole Abu Ghraib prison debacle - CBS and 60 Minutes II? What do you call it when, in time of war, someone takes military intelligence and turns it over to the enemy, who in turn uses it to kill Americans? Isn't that the definition of treason? Did Benedict Arnold do worse? Did Julias and Ethel Rosenberg pay with their lives for something like this? It has already been well established, and CBS certainly knew, that the military announced to the press back in January that allegations had been made concerning treatment of prisoners and were being investigated. In March there was another announcement that the allegations were still being investigated and certain service personnel at Abu Ghraib were relieved of their duties and might be court marshaled. In other words, while America was fighting a war, the military had already taken the allegations seriously, were investigating them and were taking steps to correct the situation. In other words, it was being handled, and handled well. These things happen in war on all sides, and though they are not excusable, they are kindergarten exercises compared to car bombs, ambushes, rocket launchings and dangling burning bodies over bridges - and this is what the interrogators at Abu Ghraib were trying to find ways to stop. Freedom of the press is precious to us, but you can abuse any liberty and stretch it out of shape until it becomes license, and concerned citizens will call for limitations. In this case, if CBS had really cared about the country, about our military, about doing the right thing, they would have taken these pictures, (which they had illegally) and asked the military and the Pentagon what was being done about the abuses (Although they most likely knew it, they would have been told that the matter was in hand and being taken care of). Indeed, a general implored them not to publish the pictures because of what he knew would happen as a result. CBS could have cared less. In their mad competition for rating points, dollars, and seeing a great way to blast the President and the war effort in Iraq which they have continually denigrated and opposed, they broadcast the abhorrent pictures and not just to the United States, BUT TO THE WORLD! Knowing full well that we were walking a tight rope, trying to fight a war, quell disturbances and build a republic for Iraq in the midst of all the terrorist resistance, CBS published these abhorrent pictures knowing they would destroy completely our image and standing in the Muslim world. And what about Osama bin Laden? What about the terrorists? What about America's image with all our allies around the world? And what about America's own self image and confidence in their leaders? And what did the beheaders of Nick Berg say, just before they callously sawed his head off while he screamed, "This is in retaliation for what you Americans did to our people at Abu Ghraib!" And how did they know about these interrogation abuses? Though poor Mr. Berg blames George Bush and Donald Rumsefld, it is incontrovertible that his son would be home with him right now had it not been for the publication of those pictures. Mr. Berg is pointing his finger in the wrong direction. And as a direct result of CBS callous and patently unpatriotic action, America is suffering great loss of prestige around the world, and will for decades. America has lost credibility with Muslims and the Arab world internationally, perhaps forever; and every American life is in far greater danger from terrorist reprisal, no matter who and where we are! Freedom of the press is a cherished commodity, guaranteed by our Constitution. But freedoms, if they are to be maintained and to have the original meaning, must be treated with grave responsibility and restraint. For me, CBS has become "the enemy within", and I hope never to watch the network again. I think most Americans ought to reflect on the results of their irresponsible and unpatriotic behavior and perhaps narrow their viewing options by one network. The next time America or Americans suffer at the hands of terrorists, thank CBS. Pat Boone PB:jsp P.S. As of today, May 21St, you can add Brokaw, NBC and The Washington Post to the list. 1. Fw: WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL
    2. H. Glenn Morris
    3. WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL IN WASHINGTON, DC Better tell Bob Dole and Our President about this What in the world is going on by deleting the word "GOD." Who gives the authority to do so? We say the below reference when we take oath in court to tell the truth. Tom E. Beal Today I went to visit the new World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. I got an unexpected history lesson. Since I'm a baby boomer, I was one of the youngest in the crowd. Most were the age of my parents, veterans of "the greatest war" with their families. It was a beautiful day, and people were smiling and happy to be there. Hundreds of us milled around the memorial, reading the inspiring words of Ike and Truman that are engraved there. On the Pacific side of the memorial, a group of us gathered to read the words President Roosevelt used to announce the attack on Pearl Harbor: "Yesterday, December 7, 1941-- a date which will live in infamy-- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked." One woman read the words aloud: " With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph." But as she read, she was suddenly angry. "Wait a minute," she said. "They left out the end of the quote. They left out the most important part. Roosevelt said 'so help us God." "You're probably right," her husband said. "We're not supposed to say things like that now." "I know I'm right," she insisted. "I remember the speech." The two shook their heads sadly and walked away. Listening to their conversation, I thought to myself, "Well, it has been 50 years. She's probably forgotten." But she was right. I went home and pulled out the book my book club is reading. It's "Flags of Our Fathers" by James Bradley. It's all about Iwo Jima. I haven't gotten too far in the book. It's tough to read because it's a graphic description of the battles in the Pacific. But right there it was on page 58. Roosevelt's speech to the nation. It ends "so help us God." The people who edited out that part of the speech when they engraved it on the memorial could have fooled me. I was born after the war. But they couldn't fool the people who were there. Roosevelt's words are engraved on their hearts. Send this around to your friends. People need to know before everyone forgets. This is the way it was written. With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounded determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God.
