    3. I have a Biggs descendant on my husband's side who sent me her web site and thought I would past this along. I am not sure if he is one of our Barrett's but someone may recognize them. I think Jim was working with some Barrett's out of North Carolina????Let me know if anyone would like her web site addy. Love Deb J. A. and A. J. Barrett J. A. and A. J. Barrett, the proprietors of a prominent dry goods store of Bolivar, are natives of Hardeman County. Their parents, John and Sauna (Birkhead) Barrett, were born in North Carohnia and came to West Tennessee when small with their parents, who were among the very early settlers. After marriage Mr. Barrett located in Hardeman County; was one of the best known and most enterprising agriculturists in the section. He belonged to no church. He was a Democrat. His career ended in 1885. Mrs. Barrett, who is still living, is a devout member of the Methodist Church; she has been the mother of nine children - five sons and four daughters. Three of the boys, Anderson, Thomas and Kindred, served in the Confede rate Army. The second, after passing safely through all the dangers and hardships of four years' warfare, met a sad and shocking death. He was killed by the "Home Guards," who mistook him for a man for whom they were lying in waiting. J. A., the senior member o! f the firm, was born March 12, 1852. He received a good education in the common schools. When about eighteen years of age he began the mercantile business as salesman. Failing in health he went west, and spent about four years in roaming. In 1880 he returned to Bolivar greatly improved, and sold goods in the house which he now occupies. In 1885 the existing partnership, under the name of Barrett Bros., was formed. A. J., the junior member, was born March 12, 1857. His early education was acquired in the common schools; afterward he attended the Henderson High School and Conference School at Montezuma. After his return he spent four years as a clerk, two years as traveling salesman and six years in Arkansas. Since 1885 he has been engaged with his brother as above stated. The Barrett brothers are warm Democrats, and wide-awake, accommodating, able, businessmen. They are having a flourishing trade. Their ancestors were of Scotch-Irish extraction.

    3. Dear Family, Several people have made a suggestion that we buy a pc for Janet & have it shipped to her. I am in agreement with doing this if this is what the list would prefer to do. My only thought is that if we send the money to either Janet or someone who lives close to her when there is enough funds then Janet could go & pick out the brand & configuration she feel would work the best for her. I will go which ever way the majority feels is the best approach. It just need to be done as soon as possible. I need some guidance on where to send my gift. I now have Janet's address. Please let me know your thoughts. Warmest Regards Glenn Morris ----- Original Message ----- From: "H. 3. My personal opinion is that political messages don't belong here, but Janet makes the rules for the list. As you know her PC is ill at best and may have gone to PC Heaven. It may be a while before she is back with us. I believe she has made her rules on the subject matter for the list VERY clear. This list is for all of our family and, as with most families, very few subjects are off topic. Let's all keep cool heads and try to be tolerant. At the same time let's remember the feelings of others when posting on what might be considered controversial subjects. Thanks. 3. Bill--- As I understand it, Janet's computer is down. She has probably lost everything off her computer, and meanwhile she doesn't have one. Until she gets up and running again, your information won't show up on the Barrett page. I have the password for Barrett Branches, but I don't work on Janet's "side." I only work in my cavalry pages and don't get into her directories for fear of messing something up. I also have material I'd like to have put on the pages, because I scanned our ancestor David Barrett's letter that he wrote in 1826. It took me many hours to get it done, as I explained here earlier, because it was a photo copy of a photostat. I have finished putting up the Pearl Harbor stories that people have sent me. I did a little editing, and if you see something you would like me to change, please let me know. I moved a few commas and divided some paragraphs, but otherwise I tried to leave your writings as they came to me. Some of you have sent your stories directly to me. I hope I have received everything. If you sent your story and don't see it posted yet, please e-mail me. Thanks to all of you who took the trouble to write your memories and send them to me. They are terrific!!! There are four new ones, maybe five: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mccannkin/PrlHrbr/ PrlHrbMem.html Karen On Jun 28, 2004, at 5:00 PM, BARRETT-REUBEN-SC-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > I sent Henry LLoyd Barrett and Velma Lucille Burrell ( my father and > mother ) info but it isn't on the Joseph page. 3. It's a great story, Bill! Give me a couple of hours, and I'll have it on the web page for all to read! Our regular writing group met today, and I read some of your memoirs to my group. The other ladies had also been "hard at work" asking their relatives to relate their memories. It is so interesting to see that, even though people were spread all over the USA, they shared many experiences of those times. It's been a privilege and a thrill for me to hear your stories! 3. Karen I don't remember very much. We lived on the old home place and farmed, also daddy operated A bulldozier for madison co. we was about four miles from Good Hope Church where R G Barrett preached, of course he died in the late 1800's. I remember all the rationing of sugar, gas etc and us using syrup and honey to cook and sweeten with. I still use cane syrup now and prefer mollases tea cakes to sugar. We were very poor in some eyes. We raised all our food except sugar, salt, tea, and coffee. We had hogs, chickens ,milk cows and daddy was the best hunter and fisherman in the country. I can remember going to school with my syrup bucket and biscuit's with big pieces of ham and the town kids laughing at me, thats when I found out we were poor. Looking back now we did fine , we had fruit trees. peaches, apples, plum, cherry, muscadine, persimmon and all kind of nuts. we didn't get electricity until 1954 then only after me and my brothers cut the right of way 18 feet wide for 1 mile. This is getting away from the subject, sorry. Jean May and Joan Blanks came to the country to play with us some when we were young , they are my second cousins. Don't remember mama talking about the war at all, other than the rationing. I remember my cousin coming to se us in his uniform he was Joan and Jeans dad Roy Barrett, I don't remember his two brothers coming to see us. Also my half brother Henry Leland Barrett came to see us , he was in the navy. The reason I remember pearl harber, I have told that story all my life.not very good at this Bill Barrett Reuben Joseph Reuben G. 3. Bill-- Thanks Bill--it's a great story! You were awfully young to remember this incident, so it must have really impressed your little mind. Please tell me a few more details, and I get it on the page. Where were you living at the time--what town and state? Was it a farm? What was your father's name? Are Jean and Joan your first cousins? How did the war years affect your family, if you can remember? And try to tell how your mother may have felt about the situation, if you are able to recall anything. Last--please tell me which son of Reuben Barrett you descend from. I'm sorry I don't have it recorded-- I've been very remiss about keeping my genealogy records caught up. Now, I will give you the webpage for the Pearl Harbor memoirs. If you see anything I need to correct, please let me know. I will be adding as I go, and there's no particular order. So--please, everyone, tell your story! http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mccannkin/PrlHrbr/ PrlHrbMem.html Kuz Karen On Jun 27, 2004, at 1:00 PM, BARRETT-REUBEN-SC-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Karen > I don't have much of A story but I was almost 3 and I was at our > house and heard my daddy and uncle fred talking about pearl and him > maybe having to go back in the army.
