    3. Jim, I think a reunion would be great in Miss. I was trying to put one together here for October but doesn't look like it will happen. Let me know what I can do to be of help. 2. Jim Barrett
    3. Is there any interest in a Reuben Barrett reunion in Mississippi next year? If so, it is time to start the wheels in motion. Things that need to be determined: 1. Where. 2. When. 3. How many. 4. Registration fee & how much. 5. Who will be on the planning committee. 6. Who will send out announcements. If we can reach Jerri Ashurst maybe she still has the list of mailing addresses and e-mail addresses she used in 2003. If not maybe Janet has a copy backed up somewhere. If not, we can do like we did last year. Everyone contribute what they have and we'll build a new list. A big difference between a Mississippi reunion and a South Carolina reunion is the number of people in the area and the distance that people have to travel. If you want a reunion let me know. If you are willing to help I need to know that also. You don't have to live in Mississippi to help. Several of those who worked on last year's reunion didn't live in South Carolina. 3. Cousins, Got this update from Jean today: “Joan is doing much better. She came home on Friday. Is weak but glad to get home. She is getting home health care, and has people already who clean her house, etc., so she will do fine. She will have to go in three times a week for treatment for an unlimited amount of time. There is no cure for the disease...just remission. They will try to cut her treatments back after a period of time, but just don't know how she will react.” Just thought everyone would want to know. Thanks for all your prayers and concern. Dale

    2. Jim Barrett
    3. Last Wednesday I posted a message asking about Joan's condition. Before Glenn's reply was posted our server at RootsWeb went down again. Normally they don't lose messages when this happens. This time they did. Glenn not only sent a reply to the list, but he copied me. His message was sent last Thursday. If you sent a message to the list since last Wednesday evening it was lost. I just checked the archives and there is nothing there from the time I sent my two messages then and my test message this morning. The last month or so has been a bit stressful for Jan and I and her family. Jan's mother was admitted to ICU at the end of June with adnominal pain. Two tumors were removed from the upper end of the large intestine. She went through the surgery and was well along the way to recovery. July 29 her temperature spiked, oxygen level in her blood was very low; white blood cell count was very high. She was returned to ICU. This time they removed her gall bladder. Once again she is in a nursing home and recovering well. She hopes to be home in time for her grandson's wedding Labor Day Weekend. Jim Barrett Bedford, TX -----Original Message----- From: H. Joan was up walking & looking forward to going home tomorrow. Buddy said she has to come back to the Hospital for outpatient physical 3 time per week but did not know how long that the therapy would last. He said Joan was handling the situation very well. I am sure she would appreciate a card for some of us. I am not sure about a phone call. I forget to ask if she felt strong enough for a conservation. Glenn Morris Bedford, TX

    2. Jim Barrett
    3. Have you checked out the Barrett Surname DNA Project web site lately? We have 6 members from Reuben's descendants and 3 members from Arthur's descendants, Arthur being the husband of Rebecca Barton. Reuben's family is indicated by SC-1 and Arthur's family is indicated by SC-2. We have one person from each group who doesn't match the other members. This was more or less expected. This leaves us with 5 SC-1 and 2 SC-2 members who match on 12 of 12 markers. More importantly, we have 3 SC-1 members and 2 SC-2 members who match on 25/25, 24/25, or 23/25 markers. Any of these matches are close enough to indicate a common ancestor for Reuben and Arthur. It does not prove there is a common ancestor nor does it prove who he was. But it is an additional piece of information to indicate that they were brothers. The web site is at http://home.flash.net/~parino/barrett-family-dna-project.htm . Jim Barrett Bedford, TX

    2. Hi to all, I have received three checks and one cash donation for Janet's computer. I think it will make a great down payment. Some have asked that you not be thanked publicly, but I know Janet thanks you from the bottom of her heart. I also know that those who benefit from her research and website also thank you. I will do my best to have Janet a new computer before I leave for the Republican National Convention in New York. If you would like to donate to Janet's new computer, please send your check to: Jim Alexander P.O. Box 21 Spring, Texas 77383 Please include your email address so I can let you know that I received your check. Thanks, Jim

    3. Karen told me she was going to help me write my memoirs and then told me to spend five minutes writing whatever came to mind about "mashed potatoes". When I said, "Are you out of your gourd?", I was not trying to be unkind but I really did think she was crazy. :) Then when I wrote my little thoughts, I sat back and laughed because I was telling something that my Granny did and some of my own food tastes. Then the light came on and I had to laugh at what I had just done. So folks, go ahead and write your fun story about mashed potatoes and then save it for your decendents to read later. 3. Dear Barrett family & friends: Ok, I know you are tired of hearing from me, but I just had to give you one more thing to do before we leave for Montana. We will be passing right by Sheryn again when we leave Montana and head west, but probably won't have time to stop this year. I should be able to check my mail occasionally, but it would be best to e-mail me at kmchett@AOL.com, if you need to get in touch with me. We will go to Vancouver, which we love, and Victoria, BC, have never seen Victoria. We also hope to visit Roger's Uncle Scotty's grave near Kelso, Wa., which no one in the family has ever visited, I'm sorry to say. So, what does mashed potatoes have to do with this? Well, if you want to read some fun memoirs, click on this link: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mccannkin/mashpota/ Mashpotmems.html This is the basic page (with no clip art or anything neat) for the mashed potato memories that I asked some of you to write! Gerry Dickens, of course, wrote a scholarly treatise, good enough for a doctoral dissertation. She's too smart for her own good! My McCann Kin pages are turning into memoir pages, but I really do enjoy encouraging others to write their stories. I hope you are all writing your own stories for your children. Don't you wish your great-grandfather had left a mashed potato story for you?!! Karen

    2. Karen and all, You did a great job on the picture webpage, I am very proud of you. I am at the library checking my e-mail..isn't this fun...haha. I had to come here anyway to do some research on the old Plaza Hotel here as we are doing a fundraising campaign to save our community theater. Our roof is about to cave in due to the storms we have had so many of lately and I am writing an article on the history of the building for the local paper here to kickoff our fundraising campaign. I hope to be back in the saddle before long. I really miss everyone. I will go down to the blood bank here and donate for Joan, Thanks to all of you who also take the time to do this. We are family, and Joan is a part of us. I really enjoyed her company when we were all at the reunion in South Carolina. I hope all is well with everyone and I will write again when I can get access to a computer. Hugs to all, Janet PS thanks Jim for taking care of the list...your doing a great job!!! 3. Karen, & All, I have not seen the site by Jean Rowell. Thanks so much for pointing me to it. On Joan's condition I am going to be out of pocket for the next 5 days but I tried to reach Buddy to find out how she is doing but there was no one at home. So maybe someone can check on her I post it for all of us. On donating blood for Joan. I was told that all you have to do is go to a recognized blood donor station i.e.; United or Carter or Red Cross Blood Services & say that you are donating for Joan Blanks in the Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS & they will take care of the paper work. In addition to praying for Joan maybe we can all give a pint & I am sure that will help them out a great deal. 3. List, A couple of weeks ago the local NBC TV affiliate, WLBT, did a feature on the blood shortage in the Jackson Metropolitan area. I was not paying close attention until I saw Joan. She was sitting up and smiling, so I made the assumption, apparently incorrect, that she was OK. I have donated blood to Mississippi Blood Services for many years. Four more pints and I will be a ten gallon donor. I am sure all you need to tell them is to credit the donation to Joan Blanks at Jackson Baptist. My blood type is A positive. This is the most common type. They tell me that since A positive is the most common type, more A positive is required than any other type. I have not been able to donate for several months for health reasons. I am better now. In the next day or two I will visit Mississippi Blood Services and see if they will again accept my blood. If so, it will be a replacement unit to Joan's account. Mark A. Causey Brandon, MS
