For some reason the surname 'Seals' sticks in my memory of Barrett researchers, but I can't fathom whom or why. So, I'm posting this 'Seals' story from the MS Civil War Message Board....perhaps one of our Barrett researchers will find it meaningful: ____________________________________________________ Lieutenant James M Seals, 42nd Mississippi Infantry Emily Sounder was one of the many volunteer nurses who worked so hard to relieve the suffering of many of the 21, 000 wounded left be hind at Gettysburg after the battle. And these nurses were, in fact, as kind to the Confederates as to their own men. On July 20, 1863, Ms. Sounder wrote her sister-law who lived in Philadelphia. In part, this missive reads: ........ I wrote a letter yesterday for Lieutenant Seal, of the 42nd Mississippi, a very interesting young man. On Wednesday morning last, we first visited the camp hospital of the Second Corps.....We had scarcely entered the field of labor when some one came and begged me to see a young Mississippi Lieutenant.....Lying on the ground, in front of one of the larger hospital tents, was a young man, whose face as I looked at him, seemed that of one of my own kindred; the same blue eyes, brown hair, and light complexion. With sorrow, I spoke of his coming North on the wrong side. A Massachusetts man in the tent eagerly answered for him: '' He could not help it; he is a good Union man at heart." This was Lieutenant Seals. In reply to my offer of service, he said I could do nothing for him. He was groaning in spirit, and suffering greatly, having been wounded in five places, and had also suffered amputation...Yesterday, I wrote his farewell message to his wife, which he was scarcely able to utter, even in a faint whisper. Lieutenant Seals died shortly afterwards and was buried in Yard b, 2nd row located on a hill between the Jacob Schwartz and George Bushman farmhouse. Unfortunately, by 1873, his grave was lost, and when 3,320 Confederate remains were shipped south between 1871 and 1873 his bones were unidentified. _______________________________________________________ The article is located at <http://www.bitsofblueandgray.com/august2002.htm> http://www.bitsofblueandgray.com/august2002.htm It tells of some of our men lost at Gettysburg........Karen, I know you'll enjoy many of these stories....there are some Alabama men there, too. Hello Janet, Welcome back. Ken
Hello Family, Well, I am finally back online again. Thank you to all who helped Jim make the arrangements. I have so much to catch up on. Hopefully starting next week I will have the time to start adding to the Barrett website. I have really missed everyone and am so glad to be back. Jim if you could take care of the list for just a little longer I would really appriciate it, maybe another week or so please please please..that way I can get caught up on the website. If anyone has sent me anything for the website before my computer crashed if you can resend it I can take care of it. I don't know if I have anythng left on disc from the old computer yet or not. Also you may have to remind me what I was doing for you when my pc crashed as my memory is terrible due to the medication I take, and I will finish it for you. I am involved with the community theater now, I am wardrobe mistress, on the Board of Directors, special projects and fundraising committee's (I need to learn to say no!!..lol) but I love it. We don't have another production for several months and after this saturday the next fundraiser is not until Nov. 8. So I should have some time, although I have to do all the costumes for the fundraising production in Nov. Hugs and I look forward to hearing from everyone, Janet
Those of you along the Gulf Coast, LA, MS, AL, FL, GA take all necessary precautions. Our prayers are with you! Jim Barrett Bedford, TX
I just received a message from Jean May, sister of Joan Blanks. Joan's recovery is not progressing as well as the family would like to see. She is at home but doesn't go out much, except for trips to the doctor. So far I have had 19 families indicate an interest in having a 2005 reunion in Mississippi. If we are going to do it, we have to have some help, local to the Jackson area, and others from anywhere. We probably have enough offers from out of state, but we need some local help finding places. Joan is able to take this on at this time and Jean has her hands full with her own family in addition to trying to help with Joan Do we have anyone who can contact the Good Hope Baptist Church in Camden, Madison Co., to see if we could use their annex during the day Saturday and maybe Sunday afternoon. You'll remember Steven Mitchell suggested this as a possible place. If we could use the annex we wouldn't have to have a motel with a meeting room. Of course it would be nice to have a meeting room at the motel. The first thing that must be decided is when. For those of you who aren't from the south, summer is hot and humid. I also understand some of you can only attend during the summer because you have children in school or you teach. I'll suggest either the weekend of June 11-12 or June 18-19 (June 19 is Father's Day). These are only suggestions, please make yours. Jim Barrett Bedford, TX
To Jim Barrett and those interested in a Mississippi Barrett Reunion. While stumbling thru my research notes from my recent MS adventure, I found some notes regarding possible sites for the MS reunion and I'd thought I'd throw them out to the interested parties for consideration..... There's Neshoba County, heart of the early Barrett homesteads in MS. The Silver Star Hotel & Casino has ample meeting rooms and reasonable hotel rooms. Easy to get to from Jackson's Airport for those out-of-stater's and an easy drive for those that can. There's Good Hope Baptist Church in Camden, Madison County. Site of Reuben Gatlin Barrett's ministry for over 30 years, the church still stands today and just last year they built a large annex for Sunday School and meeting functions. Just a short walk up the road is the 'Old Home Place', home to Richard Stancil & Susie Mitchell Barrett and their 13 children. Given to Richard and Susie as a wedding gift by my gggrandfather George T. Mitchell in 1887, the house and it's 20 acres still remain in the ownership of the Barrett clan. No lodging in the area, we' have to stay in Jackson, Canton, Kosciusko or Philadelphia. There's also Nowell Lake 'N Resort off Hwy 14 in Attala County, west of Kosciusko. No Barrett history up there to my knowledge, but quite an impressive facility. The main house is a very comfortable with ample parking for 100+ guests. The kitchen is actually a restaurant-grade serving area with a long bar, stoves, etc. Lake ' N Resort was the perfect setting for a recent Mitchell clan reunion of 100+ guests. Everyone brought food for all. Air-conditioned and only $100.00 for the facility....... That's my two cents....... r/Steven ........................................... S T E V E N M I T C H E L L
Dear Mary P, My apology. I will honor you request. Although I did not forward any message to you through the Barrett Website as you suggested but directed them to your personal email address I will in the future, if need be, correspond with you through the Barrett Website. I have respected the request by Janet & Jim to not send political or other apparently sensitive material by the Barrett list. Once again I do apologize. I will continue to honor the rule regarding the use of the Barrett list for genealogy or related information. I will not send you any additional information along those lines. Dear Glen: Thank you for honoring my request re political messages. I apologise to you because I didn't read the sender line correctly. It is fine to contact me directly,I have no quarrel with that. It is just that I receive so many political messages that I am fed up and see red whenever one comes through. Nothing against you personally at all,you have been most helpful to me and I appreciate that. Thank you again for your kind response. Mary P -----Original Message----- From: H. Dear Glenn: Please delete my name from your mailing list when sending out political messages. Politics and Religion do not a good mix make on a genealogy website. As Jim pointed out,Janet said "ours was a board for any or everything",however refrain from politics.(His words) I for one, do agree. My politics and religion may not be the same as yours and I refrain from impingeing on others right to believe in what religion or political party they may embrace. Thank you for your consideration and understanding. Mary Patchett(nee Barrett)
Most of us are well aware of Janet's feelings about what we can and can not post messages about on this list. She has said we are family and any subject is welcome. I agree with her; however I am asking all of you to reframe from posting politically offensive messages on the list. It doesn't matter which party you support, there are members of this list who support the other party. Most of us do not like for others to make fun of our beliefs. Let's all try to remain a happy family. If you feel that you need to reply to this message please reply to me at parino@flash.net , not to the list. Thanks. Jim Barrett Bedford, TX

Jim, Count me in. I recently returned from an 11-day adventure to MS and met with several descendants of Richard Stancil & Susie Mitchell Barrett. What a clan ! I returned from that adventure with loads of new data to sort thru but have been unable to attend to respond or follow-thru on my discoveries due my day-job...I have got to retire and pay attention to the more important things in life...Research and Family ! ...Will soon be digging thru those discoveries and be able to respond to those fun-loving Barrett's as well as my Mitchell clans. I'm sure many of them would love to attend the MS reunion! Later... R/Steven ........................................... Hello Everyone, I just wanted to drop a line or two and let everyone know I am still alive and kicking. I really miss everyone and hopefully will be back up and running before long. I check my mail about every three weeks so I have alot of catching up to do. I am glad to hear that Joan is better, please send her my best if anyone talks to her. Sorry to hear about Don, Karen please tell him he is in my prayers. Karen, I hope your trip went well. I would love to help with the Mississippi reunion, Jim just let me know what you need me to do. I better get off of here I am using a neighbors computer and I don't want to take up her phone line for to long. Hugs to everyone and I miss you all, Janet
Karen, It's great that my "mashed potato" story made it to the McCan pages. I couldn't quite figure out how to get there though. Is there something missing in the link? I'd like to let my little sister know so she can see it. (I didn't tell her I was writing it either.) I'm glad you made it back home safely and hope your vacation was everything you hoped it would be and more. I, too, have been missing the group's mail. I keep asking Keith if our security program is blocking it out. I guess we're all just quiet. We are getting ready to go to Chattanooga for our younger grandson's first birthday. They have been having a run of bad luck lately; keep them in your prayers. I am definitely interested in having a reunion in Mississippi next year. I will help in any way I can. Hi, All. Is the list completely silent, or am I missing something? We have been home for 3 days, and I have had no digests at all. I just wanted to report to you that my cousin, Don Bova, who is on this list, had emergency surgery for colon cancer this week. He is recovering at home in Tomball, Texas; I'm sure he would enjoy hearing from you. You can reach him at donbova@swbell.net. Before Don went in for the surgery, he made a picture page for me with a very organized layout showing our great-grandparents' children (James M. McCan and Amanda Barrett.) I previously told you of the page he made with the children of our grandparents. You can see the James McCan and Amanda Barrett photo page at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mccannkin/jm_mccanfam.html When Janet gets hooked up again, maybe she can make a link to it from Barrett Branches. Also, Don put Marilyn's mashed potato story on the Mashed Potato page. Sorry, Marilyn, that we didn't inform you it was there. I had a terrible time with my e-mail and internet connection while I was gone, so I wasn't able to do any work online, and mostly didn't have access. Hope everyone is Ok. Karen
