Thanks Keith for those kind words. The surgery went well and I have to learn what the left hand can do. Dede tells me she is the only one here in their right mind. Of course, I have ignored that for 56 years. Merry Christmas and may the LORD bless each one of you this next year. Wonder if this William was the son of Reuben, II.? Thomas J. was in Neshoba County in 1860. The 1850 census lists Thomas and Rutha in Neshoba Co, MS, with two older daughters, Elizabeth, 12 and Mary 10. Elizabeth married Friary and Mary married Cumberland. Does anyone know any descendants of Levi B. Barrett, also T.J. and Rutha's son, a veteran of the Civil War who lived in Attala County after the war? Hi Bob, I find the following with Winston Co., MS in their files: John Joseph Barrett b. 9/2/1881, m. Mary McNeil (she also d. Winston Co., MS), John died 11/3/1965 in Winston Co., MS Zella Barrett b. 4/4/1907, d. 9/27/1926 Winston Co., MS Hope this helps some. Blessings, dina
Bob, I haven't noticed any Barretts in Winston Co. especially, but consider this: Where I grew up, the community was partly in Winston Co. and partly in Neshoba County. If you'll allow, I'd like to send an attachment with a map shaded with the areas I know Barretts lived. My point is, where they lived it would be feasible that they lived a few feet away but could have been in different counties. Can you tell me the location in Neshoba Co., that the Thomas Barrett family lived? There should be a Beat #, a Post Office and/or Twp/Range. I can give you a pretty good idea where they lived in relationship to Winston Co. I also looked through a book, THE CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF WINSTON COUNTY, by William T. Lewis. This book is almost entirely about the Civil War. On page 199, I found a Henry Barrett among the list of the "Dead Roll" of soldiers from Winston Co., who lost their lives in the Civil War. I made a quick scan through the companies of soldiers that were formed in Winston Co., but didn't see his name among them. I thought I had seen Kiziah Barrett in that book, but I would have to reread the entire book as it is not indexed. I don't know if that Henry is related to our Barretts, but it would seem likely. Let me know if you want the map. Marilyn, Thank you so much for replying. I appreciate it very much. It looks like my gg grandmother, Mary Jain Barrett, born about 1840, daughter of Thomas Barrett, son of Reubin Barrett, Jr. was from Winston Co., MS. I find the family in Neshoba Co., MS in the 1850 Census. Have you seen any Barretts in Winston Co., MS from this line? Bob
I sent this and the e-mail about the additions over a week ago. I wonder why it took so long to come thru...hmmm Janet
Bob In the Ancestry.com census index, Keziah Barrett is listed in Winston Co., MS in 1840 US Census Index; in MS 1841 State Census Index; and in 1845 MS State Census Index. The films are not available for viewing at this time. I have heard or seen the name somewhere, I can't recall when or where. I live in Winston Co., so if I can look up anything for you, let me know. Has anyone ever heard of a "Kiziah Barrett" who was living in Winston County, MS in the 1820's and where he or she fits in our Barretts, if at all? Did any of our Barretts live in Winston County before Neshoba Co? Thanks. Bob

First a success story (note: this is not about Barrett DNA). My wife, Jan, has a Bates line that she has traced to GA. She has been stuck there for several years, trying to prove which of two men she descends form. Both of these men have descendants who have provided DNA samples. The results for each line match, but the results for the different lines don't match. In August she talked a male cousin into providing a DNA sample. The results are back. His DNA matched four other people in the Bates DNA project. Now she knows which line to follow. She had planed to research the other line while we are in Greenville for the reunion, now she'll have to find something else to do. The point of this is, if we had made a special trip from Texas to Greenville, SC to research the wrong men, we would spent a lot of money, and still might not know which of the two men she descends from. Don't misunderstand what the DNA results proved. It doesn't prove that she descends from either man. It did prove that she ahs a common ancestor with one of the men and does not have a common ancestor with the other man. Now a story about Barrett DNA. As most of you know I am the administrator for the Barrett DNA Project. Of course I have provided a sample. So far we have six sets of results back and three more kits have been order. We are waiting for them to be returned to Family Tree DNA which will send the samples to the lab and report the results back to us. You are welcome to visit our web page at http://www.flash.net/~parino/barrett-family-dna-project.htm . Each person is assigned to a Barrett Branch. The branches are defined at the bottom of the web page. There are two people from SC-1 (Reuben Barrett, SC). I am the one with results posted. The other man's results will not be back until after the first of the year. There is one person from SC-2 (Arthur Barrett, Reuben's brother). If you compare the results for SC-1 and SC-2 you'll see that they don't match. What does this mean? It means that he and I don't descend from the same Barrett blood line. Why not? We don't know. Where do we go from here? We must have other male Barretts, who think they descend from one of these two men provide samples. As you know I think I descend from Reuben's son John. The second SC-1 is supposed to be third cousin of mine. We both think we descend from John through different sons. When his results come back what will we know. If his results match mine, we'll know that he and I descend from the same man and that neither of us descends from the man that SC-2 descends from. If his results match SC-2, we'll know that they descend from the same man and that I don't descend from that man. If his results don't match either of us we'll be more confused than we are right now. Why am I telling you all of this? We are trying to prove connections between all Barrett lines, but more importantly connections with the Reuben Barrett line and we have a problem. We need more results from Reuben Barrett and Arthur Barrett descendants. If you look at the web page you'll see that some people have more results than others. Why? Family Tree DNA provides two test. A 12 marker test that cost $99 and a 25 marker test that cost $169. All of the money goes to FTDNA. This may seem high, but what does a lab test at the doctors office cost? Remember that research trip I talked about above. What does and overnight research trip cost? Will the test PROVE anything. It may, but it may not, just like that research trip. Spread the cost out. I know there are lots of first and second cousins, aunts and uncles, on this list. Several people can pay for the test of one person. Maybe you need a last minute gift for that relative that has everything. The results won't be back in time for Christmas, but they'll be here in January if you order now. How do you order? First visit the Family Tree DNA web site at http://www.familytreedna.com/ . you can learn a lot about the test and DNA on their site. Look at their list of surname projects. Barrett is one of over 275. Just remember that BARRETT is the important group right now. If you follow their web page to their web page for the Barrett project there is a link where you can tell them you want to join and they'll send me a e-mail with your name and e-mail address. Skip the middle man and send me an e-mail letting me know which test to want and I'll have the kit sent to you. Or you can go to http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=Y63652 and place your own order. You can even have the cost put on your credit card when you place your own order. I haven't tried to use the credit card form of payment so I don't even know if they use a secure link. I do know that they didn't cash my check until the results were back. Hello Everyone, I just had to share this with ya'll. Everyone knows I am a Texan and this really stirred me (another Texas saying,,ha) Those of you who are also Texans will understand. I hope you enjoy it. Check this out...This commentary is right on! When you're from Texas, people that you meet ask you questions like, "Do you have any cows?" "Do you have horses?" "Bet you got a bunch of guns, eh?" They all want to know if you've been to Southfork. They watched Dallas. Have you ever looked at a map of the world? Look at Texas with me just for a second. That picture, with the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast, and the Red River and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything ever will be. As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it they know what it is. It's Texas. Pick any kid off the street in Japan and draw him a picture of Texas in the dirt and he'll know what it is. What happens if I show you a picture of any other state? You'll get it maybe after a second, but who else would? And even if you do, does it ever stir any feelings in you? In every man, woman and child on this little rock the Good Lord put us on, there is a person who wishes just once he could be a real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride in a pickup. There is some bit of Texas in everyone. Did you ever hear anyone in a bar go, "Wow...so you're from Iowa? Cool, tell me about it?" Do you know why? Because there's no place like Texas. Texas is the Alamo. Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom. We send our kids to schools named William B. Travis and James Bowie and Crockett and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes. John Wayne paid to do the movie himself. That is the Spirit of Texas. Texas is Sam Houston capturing Santa Ana at San Jacinto. Texas is Juneteenth and Texas Independence Day. Texas is huge forests of Piney Woods like the Davy Crockett National Forest. Texas is breathtaking mountains in Big Bend. Texas is shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas. Texas is world record bass from places like Lake Fork. Texas is Mexican food like nowhere in the world, even Mexico. Texas is the Fort Worth Stockyards and the Bass Hall. Texas is larger-than-life legends like Willie Nelson and Buddy Holly, Earl Campbell and Nolan Ryan, Denton Cooley and Michael DeBakey, Sam Rayburn, Lyndon Baines Johnson, and Tom Landry. Texas is great companies like Dell Computer and Compaq. Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops. Texas is skies blackened with doves, and fields full of deer. Texas is a place where cities shut down for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and NIOSA River Parade in San Antonio. Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities. If it isn't in Texas, you don't need it. No one does anything bigger or better than it's done in Texas. By federal law, Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly its flag at the same height as the U.S. flag. Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland, or California, or Maine, and your state flag, whatever it is, goes at 17. You fly the Stars and Stripes in front of Pine Tree High in Longview at 20 feet, the Lone Star flies at the same height - 20 feet. Do you know why? Because we place being a Texan as high as being an American down here. Our capitol is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington, D.C. We included these things in as part of the deal when we came on. That's the best part right there......WHEN WE CAME ON. A test to see if you are REALLY a Texan! If you are a REAL TEXAN, ... You measure distance in minutes. You've had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day. Stores don't have bags; they have sacks. Stores don't have shopping carts; they have buggies. You see a car running in the parking lot at the store with no one in it no matter what time of the year. You use "fix" as a verb. Example: I am fixing' to go to the store. All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit, vegetable, flower, insect or animal. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked. You carry jumper cables in your car ... for your OWN car. You know what "cow tipping" and "snipe-hunting" are. You only own four spices: salt, pepper, ketchup, and Tabasco You think everyone from a bigger city has an accent. You think sexy lingerie is a tee shirt and boxer shorts. The local papers cover national and international news on one page but requires 6 pages for high school, colleg and pro football. You think that the first day of deer season is a national holiday. You know which leaves make good toilet paper. You find 90 degrees F "a little warm." You know all four seasons: Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer, and Christmas. You know whether another Texan is from southern, middle, or northern Texas as soon as they open their mouth. There is a Dairy Queen in every town with a population of 500 or more. Going to Wal-Mart is a favorite past-time known as "goin wal-martin" or off to "Wally World" You describe the first cool snap (below 70 degrees) as good chili weather. A carbonated soft drink isn't a soda, cola, or pop ... it's a Coke, regardless of brand or flavor. You understand these jokes and forward them to your friends no matter where they live in case they are planning to visit. Yee Haw!!!

Do not delete that file! It is a valid Java file. I deleted mine a few weeks ago. It is not going to hurt anything if you already did, you just won't be able to view some java pages. Janet

Hello to all my "cousins", I haven't been posting to the list the last few weeks because I have been busy researching! Can you believe it I finally got to do some researching!!! It was fun too, I missed it! I wanted to let everyone know that I have added pages for all of Mattie Barrett Bobo and William Bobo's children on the website. Before all anyone had was the names and circa dates of birth for the children. Betty Neimann and I have been researching this family line for the last two weeks and have found multiple generations for most of the children, including census records, obituaries etc... I am really excited about these pages and all the information we found. If anyone wants to update thier records, feel free to. Please add Betty Neimann to your source as well as the website name where a source is not listed. But I did include research notes on these pages so read the facts carefully before you add anything to your files. I will start on another of John Whitten Barrett's children in a few days until I get them all complete. If there is a descendant of any of his children on the list and their pages are not made yet, please contact me so we can work together to complete this project. I want to go ahead and finish all the pages on the webites of any children of any Barrett line missing. Thanks, and if you have anything to add to the Barrett/Bobo line, please let me know, I still have a few pages to add but most all the links work on the page. Janet

Jack, Thanks for the reply. I didn't make my self clear. There are too many Reubens and too many Johns. I should have asked for someone who descends form John Barrett who died in Hall Co., GA in 1853 and was the son of Reuben Barrett who died in Greenville Co., SC March 3, 1814. I'm looking for another male Barrett, from my John, for Y-Chromosome testing. After I find that person and have them tested I may be looking for another male Barrett who descends from Reuben, through a different son of Reuben and Hannah. Karen Hett did suggest I contact you to see if you knew how to reach the son of Lloyd Barrett, who lived in Houston and Livingston before his death. Many of the descendants of my John live/lived in Waco. Thanks again.
