Janet, No one has found any indication of when & where Frank Birch Barrett,( it may be Birch or Burch) Barrett and Miles Barrett are buried????According to the census of 1920, his wife was Johnnie and they lived next door to my grandparents, John & Ollie Mayes.I, also, don't know where or when Norman died but he was young when he died.If ANYONE happens to stumble across this data,Please pass it along to me. Keep up the GOOD work !!!! the website is Outstanding !!!!! As ever, Gaye
I don't know about the value of the website listed below. I dropped by and was beat to death by pop-ups. I did stay long enough to see a message that said there was proof that Arthur Barrett who married Nancy Barton, Nancy Barrett who married David Barton, and Reuben Barrett who married Hannah Doty were siblings. This is the second time since the first of the year I have seen this. If anyone has this proof I sure would like to see it. Please understand, I have assumed that there was a very good possibility that they were related, but I have never seen any proof that they were siblings. I was also disappointed to see the use of Doty as Hannah's maiden name. The last time I looked at Janet's web page under the section, myths, this was one of them. Have I missed out again. Has someone found proof that Hannah was a Doty? It is my personal opinion that all of us on this list need to make every effort to state facts as facts and theories as theories. I would really hate for a new researcher to see something here, posted as fact, that had not been proven. I also know that just because I have not seen proof, doesn't mean that it is not true. Please, let's all be careful. Let me put a ditto on this - I HATE it when I'm searching for information - and come across someone's web site and see that they've taken my info (more likely than not - PARTS of my info without giving adequate disclaimer, etc.) that I've used to base a theory on, or a lead that I'm searching out but haven't proven yet, but they state it as FACT. I HATE THAT!!! Case in point - I've been doing some search on the Doty thing, and have done some correspondence with the Mayflower Society, as well as obtained some records to try to follow through on the descendants on a potential line for our Hannah - and I *thought* the only place I'd posted this information was here - but I found a person had posted it on their site (it was obviously my information - same typos and everything) - and claimed it as their own research, and stated it as fact. Totally hacks me off. Needless to say, I jet off a somewhat angry email to people when I find that. I think we all should when we come across stuff like this. Back to the connection on Reuben and potential siblings - I've read quite a few wills, deeds, etc., that connect them - I've got to dig it out - but being very early move, chances are it will be some time before I come across that particular box with that particular file. If it's something you really want to see - will you nag me? I'm trying to fit in a little bit of research here and there, but life has been somewhat nutty, and I have to remind even myself to follow through on stuff that I'm supposed to do. Oh, and btw, here's my new contact information: Mrs. Dina McBride 15224 NW Sweetgale Lane Portland, OR 97229 Same email address - sorry if you tried to reach me by email the 2 days that my modem was rejecting email - a little boo boo on the part of AT&T. The email address still works, in fact there are a couple of them: [email protected] [email protected] Blessings, dina -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, January 05, 2003 9:25 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Barrett-Reuben-SC] Reuben Barrett Query Posts Jim, Yes there has been proof found that Nancy Baarrett Barton is in fact the sister of Reuben and Arthur. A letter was found by one of her grandchildren or great grandchildren who mentions "Uncle Reuben" or a granchild of Reuben who mentions "Aunt Nancy Barton" or something like that. I have been trying to get a transcription of the letter. Iwill post it on the site if i can ever get permission for it. I believe it was Karen who told me about it. Maybe she can clarify it, but you know how she is, she won't state a fact unless she is positive that it is true. As far as Hannah's maiden name being "Doty" what I always do is put a "?" behind the name. I do not know of anyone who has found any proof of her last name either. What gets me is when someone uses my name to state me as a source on false information. I think I found someones file once who said you were a source that had proof that William Barrett was the father of Reuben Barrett, then when I asked you about it you knew nothing about it. I agree we all should set an example for new genealogists and how they should document their facts and sources. When I first started genealogy my mentor was very hard on me about finding "solid proof" before ever stating any facts. It is something I always try to stick to. (if not she will yell at me -haha) And I hope that if anyone ever finds any errors on the website that you will let me know. Yes, Jim, I was told that the Residence Inn is very close. It will work out great if I bring the family. Jim Alexander
Hi Jim I tried to make reservation there, I was told there were no handicapped rooms left. I have already made reservations somewhere else. Sorry. Jim Alexander
Jim, When I selected them, they assured me that there were handicapped rooms available. I'm sorry that they ran out or that I was misinformed. I hope you were able to find something near by. As of this afternoons mail I have received $975.00 for the marker fund. The marker must be ordered by March 3, 2003 for the company to have it ready for delivery in time for the reunion. I am very grateful to those of you have manage to send your donation. When I place the order I have to write a check for half of the cost or $809.03. We will also have the cost of the emblem if we can get it approved, which will be an additional $110 (more or less). Before I write a check for $809.03, we need to be sure we are going to be able to make raise the rest of the money. I'm sure we'll have people at the reunion whose only contact with us has been the mailing sent out a few months ago. I think it is realistic to want 75% of the total cost before the marker is ordered. This would be about $1300 or $350 more than we currently have. I'd like to hear the opinions of other members of the list. As you know we had had the Quality Inn-Haywood in Greenville, SC set aside a minimum of 15 rooms for the reunion. As a part of the arrangement we have their meeting room for three days. This gives us a place to meet at night and during the day in case of bad weather. The rate for the rooms is $59 per room. Any of us could gets rooms for less than this, but we would not have the meeting room. I don't remember the date they said we needed to have the 15 rooms reserved by, but it was either April 1 or May 1. Regardless, if you want one of these rooms you need to get your reservation made. The reunion is on a holiday weekend. The rooms are set aside for May 23, 24, and 25. Be sure to tell them you are part of the Barrett reunion. I talk to the hotel today and there have been five rooms reserved so far. Thanks to all for your support. Hello, Does anyone from the David Barrett line have anything on James Buchannan Manning the husband of John Whitten Barrett's daughter, Sarah Alice Iantha Barrett. Maybe Lou Jordy or Brad Manning, I think they are both on this list. I am writing a biography on him and any help would be appriciated. I already have all the children, maybe his occupations, or anything else that seems to be interesting I can add to it. I know from writing Sarah Alice's biography their lives were so tragic. Thanks for any help anyone can give, Janet
I have sent out two request for quotes on the marker for Reuben and Hannah. The first was sent Nov. 19, 2002, the second was sent Dec. 2, 2002. I still have not heard back from the first company. I have already posted the quote from the second company, it was $1,618.05. This does not include the cost of the DAR emblem which I believe will be $100 plus tax and shipping. I talked to the company that provided the quote Tuesday. To be sure they have the marker ready, they want to receive the order by March 3, 2003, with a check for $809.03. The second payment will be due when they set the marker. They also want the emblem or a template for the emblem when the marker is ordered. They need to know where to drill the holes. I contacted the only source I know of for the emblem and they tell me they don't have templates for the emblems. Our marker fund contains $625.00. A special thanks to all of you who have sent me checks. It will program the auto dial on your phone so that you can call only 1-900 numbers. This virus will also mix antifreeze with water in your fish tank. Bob, I should have mentioned this before. The name of Joseph and Rutha's church was NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH. It evolved into its present name of Bond Baptist Church. The site of the original New Hope Church now is owned by the Pentecostal church (North Bend Pentecostal) located at Section 29-T12N-R13E, Choctaw Baseline & Meridian. There is a cemetery there too. Aunt Eunice Fulton Tingle showed us all the places of her youth and where she went to school near North Bend Methodist Church about 80 years ago. It's all woods now. She told us where the artesian well was at New Hope Baptist Church. This was in 1996 and I'm very sad to say, Aunt Eunice who is now 94, never got to show us where Elisha M. Barrett, her grandfather's house stood. I believe Horace Cumberland lived there later. Merry Christmas and a joyful New Year. Ann L. [email protected] wrote:Marilyn, Thank you so much. I think the area Thomas Barrett lived in was the Coffadeliah Area of Neshoba Co. The same church that Joseph Barrett's wife, Rutha, went to was also his family's church since I have seen reference to him by the Church Committee concerning his habits. I can't think now but think the church was White Oak. Thomas was married to Rutha Moore Barrett's daughter, Rutha Moore. Thank you, Dina. I appreciate this info. Wonder who John J. Barrett was the son of? Bob
Sadly, I don't know who John Joseph was the son of - I've got his info from his gravestone and his WWI draft card (he registered in Neshoba Co., MS). Some day when I've got some time (ha! We're in the middle of a move - time is a foreign concept at the moment!) I need to hit the census and see if I can't find either either he or his wife. Hopefully someday I can get this figured out. I have this compulsive habit - I should confess to - of "collecting" Barretts that I suspect may tie in to our group one way or the other. This John Joseph falls into that category - I think he ties in somewhere, just not sure, so I added him into my database as an unrelated individual. I love that function! I'll keep my eyes open for your bunch, tho, too, okay? Blessings, dina
