    2. Hello All, Just wanted to welcome Steven Mitchell to the list. And to let the Joseph descendants know that Gerry Dickens sent me a file today on Richrd Stancel Barrett which I posted this morning. I also added some backgrounds and graphics to the pages in that section. Hope everyone enjoys and is able to add to their family files from it. Thanks Gerry!!! Your a doll. Hugs, Janet

    2. Hello Joseph researchers, I heard again from Steve Mitchell and wanted to share his e-mail with you in case you can answer any of his questions. Thanks and thanks to Gerry for writing him, Janet Subj: BARRETTS Date: 1/14/03 1:20:39 PM Central Standard Time From: [email protected] (Steve Mitchell) To: [email protected] Janet, It was good to hear from you. Your website is GREAT ! I have just also received a very detailed document from another researcher [Gerry Dickens] who had noticed my posting at Genforum. The Barrett clans have been busy! I had visited with Nellie Louise Barrett Faulk, one of Richard Stancel Barrett's daughters back in 1992. I was saddened to see in the Dickens documents that she had passed away back in 1995. Louise had given me some documents that she'd typed up based on information she'd collected herself, and thru her mother's uncle, Robert C. Mitchell. Robert is the brother of Susie Mitchell's father, George Turner Mitchell. George, of course, was married to Henrietta Hemingway. Louise's transcript outlines her parents as well as her 13 siblings. There are conflicts of names and sibling count between that of your website, the Dickens documents and other documents we have. While Louise speaks of 13 siblings + herself, yours speaks of 15 in all, and Dickens speaks of 12 in all. I'm going to study in-depth this weekend and lay it all out...hopefully with some clarity. Louise's document also speaks of her Grandparents, John Napoleon Barrett and Elizabeth Watson., and their 10 children. There is even some lineage on Elizabeth. What throws us off with Louise's document is her claim that her GreatGrandfather was an Elisha Barrett, not Joseph as recorded by all the Barrett researchers we've seen across the years. She names Elisha as her GreatGrandfather and names only three sons, John Napoleon, Reuben [who married Elizabeth Watson's sister, Amanda Watson] and Elisha, Jr. John Napoleon and Elizabeth also had a son, Elisha, who died at 12 years old. What do you make of the "Elisha" claim? We'd be most excited to help each other fill in the gaps in our ancestries. Let us know what your immediate needs or roadblocks are and we'll see if we can help. Meanwhile, I'll compare your documents against our data and am certain that we'll speak again shortly! 3. We have agreed to place a marker in the Tyger Baptist Church Cemetery at the location of the two stones marked RB and HB. We have also agreed to try to place a DAR emblem on the marker. As you may know Marilyn has been trying to obtain DAR approval for the emblem. Today she asked, "Do you know who has the documented evidence that these are in fact Hannah and Reuben Barretts' graves? DAR will want to know. A source from a publication is acceptable." Let's be realistic, anyone could have come along and placed two stones in the cemetery after scratching the letters RB and HB in them. Looking at the pictures of the stones, the scratched letters could be new, compared to 1814. If we assume that the letters do date back to 1814, what proof do we have that these are the stones for Reuben and Hannah. Do you think DAR will believe that there were only two people in the area with those initials? Please understand, I'm not questioning this, but I am trying to look at it from the DAR's point of view. If you have anything we need it now. Please send me copies as soon as possible and post to the list what you have sent. Thanks. 1. [Barrett-Reuben-SC] Reuben Barrett Descendants Book
    2. Hello All, As most of you know I have been self publishing the 530 page book I compiled Descendants of Reuben Barrett 1755 to 2000, I just wanted to let everyone know that I have signed my books with Higginson Books and they will be publishing them from now on. They had to raise the price on the books a little bit, but anyone who orders them directly from me can get them cheaper. I have never made a profit from the books and I will adjust the price so that it will still be that way, but I have to order them 10 at a time. They will also put two copies in the Library of Congress. I have always felt it wouldn't be right making a profit from everyone else's donated material which made up the books. If you order a book from them thru my website then you will get 10% off of their price. It probably won't be out until about March or April as I just sent the manuscript in last week, but they never said how long it will take. It seems like the reunion is right around the corner now, I am really looking forward to meeting some of you in May. I hope everyone has a great day!!! Janet

But maybe someone will come forward and tell the details about how it was found, who wrote it, the date of the letter, and who owns it now, etc. This would indeed be a break-through! Unfortunately, it is not destined to be part of our research records without the source and a copy being "out there." The best thing you could do would be to start with the person who told you about it. Karen

I HATE THAT!!! >> Dina, I come across that all the time; in fact, it really turned me off of genealogy research on the Internet at the beginning. The people with the technical proficiency to get on the Internet in those days were the ones whose genealogical proficiency could be placed in a thimble. If you asked someone for a source, you got either no answer or DUuhhhhh. Another example of people lifting one's writings: when I first "met" Janet, she had papers that some of her cousins had written, with much of my "stuff" incorporated in the body of their papers and with no references whatsoever (some were taken from county histories). When these things are passed around and around, I have to feel sorry for anyone who tries to document the statements in them. If at least the book of publication is mentioned, then the reader can look up that history and find out who submitted the story. I ALWAYS want to find the original, original source of everything. Once, a few years ago, I came across a book which listed Reuben Barrett as a Rev. War participant from S. C. There were about 6 sources listed by his name, and I recognized that some sources I had not seen. So, I went to the Interlibrary loan desk at the little local library and started ordering each of these books (I actually asked for Xerox copies of the appropriate pages knowing that the really old books don't circulate) and stuck with her until she was able to find ALL of them! I was concerned that there might have been some original paper work on Reuben's service that I had missed. This is just one example of striving to find original sources. I think it's extremely inconsiderate and thoughtless for anyone to offer ANY genealogical fact or story without making it clear how the reader can access the source. I firmly believe that YOU should look at the document in its original form and YOU should make the interpretation of that document. YOU might have an entirely different take on it. As an example, YOUR qualifications for interpreting the old handwriting correctly in the light of the historical significance might be far above those of the person who circulated the writing. That's the real reason that provenance is important. But, I agree, it does cut to the core when you find the things you wrote "out there" with no source. There have always been bad genealogists, and they have proliferated due to the ease of the Internet. It's a problem that's not going away soon. Karen

    3. If you have a copy of this letter, I sure would like to have a copy and I'll bet Karen would also. About a month ago I asked, on this list, if anyone had proof that Arthur Barrett, who married Rebecca Barton (I said Nancy Barton in error earlier) and our Reuben were brothers. So far no one has mentioned any. I'm still waiting to see any proof that three were siblings. I don't consider transcribed documents as proof. I have seen to many errors. "I believe it was Karen who told me about it. Maybe she can clarify it, but you know how she is, she won't state a fact unless she is positive that it is true." And I agree with her. Stating something as fact when you don't have proof it where the problems start. A letter was found by one of her grandchildren or great grandchildren who mentions "Uncle Reuben" or a granchild of Reuben who mentions "Aunt Nancy Barton" or something like that. I have been trying to get a transcription of the letter. Iwill post it on the site if i can ever get permission for it. I believe it was Karen who told me about it. Maybe she can clarify it, but you know how she is, she won't state a fact unless she is positive that it is true. As far as Hannah's maiden name being "Doty" what I always do is put a "?" behind the name. I do not know of anyone who has found any proof of her last name either. What gets me is when someone uses my name to state me as a source on false information. I think I found someones file once who said you were a source that had proof that William Barrett was the father of Reuben Barrett, then when I asked you about it you knew nothing about it. I agree we all should set an example for new genealogists and how they should document their facts and sources. When I first started genealogy my mentor was very hard on me about finding "solid proof" before ever stating any facts. It is something I always try to stick to. (if not she will yell at me -haha) And I hope that if anyone ever finds any errors on the website that you will let me know. Janet
