Hello All, Well I have been at it again!!!! As all of you know it is my main goal to bring Reuben Barrett Descendants together and in the process I have met some fantastic people, all of you being my "cousins" was just an added delight. I have set up a live chat room on the Reuben Barrett Branches Website! It is easy to access and you don't have to download anything. And it is FREE. There is a Blue Box on the top of the Index page of the website, the address is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~barrettbranches/ All you have to do is click the button to the left that says "Chat Now" it will open a page and you just type your name in it and it takes you to the Reuben Barrett Descendants Chatroom. (There may be other pages that pop up that are advertisements, just close them.) I think this will be a great way for all of us to get together to discuss our family lines, the DNA project, The Reunion, The DAR Marker, the headstone, or just to chat and get to know each other better. I will post on the list and the webpage the day and times (after we all agree on it), we can all meet. As I know we all have busy schedules with kids, church, and life in general. I am open to any day or time if ya'll would like to start sending in suggestions for our first "discussion." They don't have to be at the same time and day every week and I would like to keep it flexible for everyone. We can also have more than one a week if some can't make it and others can. Red had tried this once a year or so ago but a lot couldn't get into the domain he had it on, so it was abandoned, but we have this list now and also we have so much going on that I think it will be easier to discuss everything that we have planned. I am really excited about this and I hope everyone will make an effort to come check on everything that is going on and give your suggestions and comments. I can't wait to hear from everyone and I am really looking forward to chatting with everyone. I hope to hear from everyone soon. Please post your suggestions for time and date on the list so everyone else can compare to their schedules. Hugs, Janet

I quite accidentally stumbled across this web site while looking for something else entirely. There are a wealth of names in the 1861 record of the South Carolina Baptist Association; sadly they don't appear to be indexed. There are other links at the bottom, I haven't investigated, but appears to be from Univ. of NC at Chapel Hill. May be worth looking at. (I didn't see any BARRETT names on first pass.) Marilyn
Gaye, from my calculations (with the help of my AFT program) you are the 4th great-granddaughter of Reuben Barrett. --Marilyn Dowdy ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 8:36 PM Subject: Re: [Barrett-Reuben-SC] DAR RESPONSE > CONGATULATIONS on a job WELL DONE!!!!! Barrett's middle name was "Gallatin" or "Gatlin" seems to be in question as I've seen it both ways but my family has it as "Gatlin".>> I think I've written this before, but people named "Gallatin" were being named in honor of Albert Gallatin (1761-1849). He was a U. S. statesman, was Secretary of Treasury from 1801-1813. At the moment, I can't remember what exactly he was known for, but it was some sort of westward expansion project. He was greatly admired in his day, and many boys were named for him, as well as a town in Tennessee. Reuben's son David (my ancestor) named his oldest son "Albert Gallatin Barrett," and he was called "Gallatin" instead of Albert. It was sometimes misspelled as "Galitan." So, I'm quite sure that R. G.'s name was originally supposed to be Gallatin, and that it was corrupted along the way. Obviously, as time passed, people would have forgotten the original Mr. Gallatin, and probably wouldn't have known exactly what the name was supposed to be. In my records, I would write it correctly as "Gallatin" and then put (Gatlin) in parenthesis or quotation marks to show that this is what he was actually called or nicknamed. We should always note the nicknames of individuals in our family history, because often the names are used interchangeably even on official records. Hopes this helps a bit. Karen Hett

Hip Hip Hooray!!! Hip Hip Hooray!!! Hip Hip Hooray!!! My head is a bloody pulp from trying to get information from DAR national about getting approval for the emblem. I did receive an application to put an emblem on a members grave. That's a lot of help. I have talked with the company that I plan to order the marker from. If we cannot get the emblem in time, it can be added after the fact. Sure, I'd prefer to have the emblem when we dedicate the marker, but we do what we can. Yes, the Dallas Barrett in question is Dallas Clement Barrett (my great-grandfather) and my great-uncle Fred Barrett was his son. Whether the Rev. R. G. Barrett's middle name was "Gallatin" or "Gatlin" seems to be in question as I've seen it both ways but my family has it as "Gatlin". Dale Barrett
I asked Steven if i could post this e-mail he sent me and I will also post it on the website. I know there are several researchers on the list who can answer his questions better than I can. It confirms some confused information my Mitchell family has on the Barrett clan. The document received from Nellie Louise Barrett Faulk back in 1992 is attached for your perusal. It indicates the parentage and issue of Elizabeth Watson, w/o John Napoleon Barrett. Back in the 1800's, the Mitchell's married in to two prolific Mississippi clans, the Barrett's and the McDaniel's. All, for the most part, out of Madison County and the surrounding areas. A great deal of the 3 families are buried in the Good Hope Baptist Cemetery in Camden, Madison Co., MS. We currently show our Barrett connections as follows: Susan Margaret Mitchell, d/o George T. Mitchell, m. Richard Stancil Barrett, s/o John Napoleon & Elizabeth Watson Barrett, s/o Joseph Barrett, s/o patriarch Reuben & Hannah Barrett. Pacific Lamberson Mitchell, d/o George T. Mitchell, m. William Samuel Barrett, s/o Elisha M. Barrett, s/o Rueben, Jr. & Sarah "Sallie" Miller Barrett, s/o patriarch Reuben & Hannah Barrett. There are others but I can't locate them off-hand. I'm digging thru my files now to see what we can dig up on our Barrett knowledge, but we do have a few questions at this time...... We are seeking information on William Samuel Barrett and his family. Gerry, do you have? I don't see Elisha M. as an issue of Reuben, Jr. & Sarah Miller on the Barrett Branches website. Nannie Elizabeth Barrett, d/o Richard Stancil, m. William Frederick Barrett, s/o Dallas Barrett & Sarah Gober. I have a Dallas Clement Barrett, s/o Richard Stancil's brother, Reuben Gallatin Barrett & Amanda Watson, Elizabeth Watson's sister. Is this Dallas father of William Frederick Barrett? Regarding Rutha Cabiness Moore Barrett. She seems to have a confusing lineage. If we understand her correctly, she is the d/o William Cabiness who first married Micajah, son of Chief Nettikechi , Micajah was otherwise known as William Moore ...? They had 3 children, Charles C. Moore, William M. Moore & Elizabeth Moore....?. Although I'm sure you are familiar with it, I found an email, message #117 on genforum.genealogy.com/cabiness dated 5/29/2000 that reads as follows: "Rutha Moore's father did deed her some land in Tuscaloosa, AL July21,1825 Book E., page 120 and recorded Sep 25, 1826. She was issued marriage license to Rev. Joseph Barrett in Tuscaloosa Nov 6, 1826. As far as the Indian names, the Moore name was used by two daughters of Chief Pushmataha - Betsy Moore and Martha Moore when they sold land in a deed in Holmes Co., MS. Choctaw Chief Nitakechi was his nephew and it has always being told that Rutha ran away with Chief "Nitacature" 's son. It is also from sworn testimony to the Indian Commission by Rutha's grandson, Charles Micajah Moore 1846-1927; and by her son, John Napoleon Barrett in 1903. Rutha's son, William M. Moore, b1822 moved to Indian Territory Oklahoma where he lived and died about 1885. William M.'s son, (Rutha's grandson) William E. "Bill" Moore was admitted to the Choctaw Nation Aug 24, 1897- he died in Wilburton, IT, Okla. William M's daughter (Rutha's Granddaughter) Bettie Ann Moore married William A. Lewis and she and her family were admitted as Choctaws under Choctaw Nation Bill No 38, approved Nov 6, 1895. They moved to Okla Indian Territory, Skullyville, Cameron. Her children were Frank Lewis, Indian Affairs lawyer in Washington and Dr. Annie Lewis,PHD Hall of Fame, University of Oklahoma who wrote the book entitled, "Pushmataha." In the 1850 Census of Neshoba County, MS HH260: Rutha Barrett, age 54, born in VA and 5 Barrett sons all born in Alabama; next door HH261: William Moore, age 28, b. in Tenn w/Elizabeth,his wife and 2 sons Micajah, age and Frances, age 2. Rutha also had a son Charlie C. Moore b 1820 in Tenn and 2 daughters. She had children by Rev Joseph Barrett: David Hamilton Barrett b Mar 13,1829; John Napoleon Barrett, July 29 1831; Reubin Gatlin BArrett, b. Jul 3, 1833 and Benjamin Tullman Artist Barrett, abt 1836 The reason I was wondering about Rutha's Indian blood is that I have a copy of a letter from the late researcher Hays Barrett Hays of Neshoba Co., MS who made a statement that Rutha Moore Barrett was Indian but I really don't think this is true except she did have Indian Moore children. Robert Bowman Bowman also writes in an earlier posting: Rutha Cabanis Moore Barrett was the daughter of William Cabanis of Virginia of French Heugenot descent. Yes, William M (I have seen it Malaise and Millias) and Charlie C. were her children from her marriage to Nitakech's son. She also had two daughters in this marriage. Robert Bowman What does current research show relating to the Bowman information. I can't seem to locate him to confirm his current findings. Do we know the birth dates, etc. of Rutha & Micajah's issue? Also, John Napoleon's testimony for Charles C. Moore indicated that Micajah died c1822. Is that right? Rutha didn't marry Joseph Barrett until 1826. Also, in that same testimony, John Napoleon said his mother died in '53....wasn't it 55? Robert Crenshaw Mitchell, or "Bob", was Louise Barrett's source of some of her material. He was George T. Mitchell's youngest brother. Robert and his wife, Bettie Draper, as well as George T. Mitchell, his wife Henrietta Hemingway, his mother Susanna _____ , another brother Loyd H., and a daughter, Nannie Mitchell McDaniel, are also buried in the Good Hope Baptist Cemetery. We've been looking for the grave of the Mitchell patriarch, James H. Mitchell, Susanna's husband for years. He was born c.1810 TN, moved to Camden, Madison Co., MS just before the 1850 census, and disappeared after the 1870 census. We assumed he died btwn. 1870 & 1880 in Camden, Madison County and could be very well buried in Good Hope Baptist Cemetery but his headstone has disappeared. We've had no luck contacting the Church deacons seeking to extract any information from their records. I had visited Madison County back in 1992 doing research on the Mitchell/Barrett/McDaniel clans and intend to visit sometime this year. There are still a few Mitchell's living in MS and we hope to visit with them or their kin then. I'm attaching a report on the Mitchell family....perhaps it may be of some help to your research. ........................................... S T E V E N M I T C H E L L

We are all family, it doesn't matter how many generations or distances there are between us. We will be here when you are able to get back into genealogy. Hugs to not just Dina, but to all, Janet
Hi, Don, Donna, and Dina-- I'm under the weather, too, just recovering from a virulent form of pneumonia which the doctor called Legionnaire's Disease. I still hope to finish transcribing and posting the letter from Hays Barrett Hays, which I started so long ago. Karen

Donna, It's been very nutty in my house - just moved, my mother-in-law passed away, my great-aunt (a Barrett descendant too, btw) passed away, I had unexpected company for a week, the holidays, and now my husband and daughter have pneumonia. I keep thinking it'd be great fun to get some time in to research. But I'm afraid at this rate, it's gonna be a while! It's always great to hear of what other people are working on, though - that's encouraging to me! Blessings, dina
