Gaye, Thank you for the kind words, but it is not me, it is all of you that make it possible. I agree with you about a familys name. It was nice to hear from you again, be well. Hugs, Janet
I have a question because I well never be able to go to SC or Tyger Cemetery, Janet have you ever been there and if so, could you or anyone tell me what it looks like and what part the two stones are in the cemetery. If anyone has other pictures of the cemetery or the graves I would love to see them so I can see what it look like. For my minds sake. Janet, I commend you on your wonderful website and to the preserving of OUR family heritage. A person's name is a badge of honor, something to be proud of and cherish as long as we live. Nothing should tarnish our namesake.Although, I'm not a Barrett by name, the same bloodline runs in my veins, thanks to my grandmother, Ollie Bertram Barrett, the daughter of Miles Barrett, the fourth grandson of our patriach , Reuben Barrett. Thanks a million from a grateful heart, Gaye
Donna and everyone else on list, The list has been very quiet the last week. I am sure all of us right now are glued to our newscasts because of what happened yesterday. I guess we kinda settle in to "no big deal" attitude after the space program has made so many launches and landings. I believe this family needs to pray for the families of the seven people who died yesterday. They all believed in what they were doing and as President Bush said "They may not have made it back to earth, yet we can hope they are all safely home." Well, I wasn't going to say anything for a while but to try to stir up some activity on the list I will share a little bit of this with you. Karen Hett and I have been working with Mr. Bob Jackson. I believe most of you know who he is. He has agreed to put all the old documents on our website from the Dr. Jackson Archives. These include old documents, letters, and research from the 1920s, including the findings of the Researcher he hired in Virginia to try to find out if Reuben Barrett migrated from there. He would like to dispel a lot of the things that have been circulating over the years that are not true. For instance that our family was from Virginia, that Mary Barrett was born in VA, and a few others. We will scan the old documents so that you can see them for yourself. It is taking some time as Mr. Jackson is in Connecticut and is caring for his elder family, and he has to approve everything that Karen puts together before she sends it to me to post on the website. Karen also has some things going on in her life that she has to stop and take care of now and then. But I think it is very exciting that we will finally have access to all these valuable letters that were written by our family in the 1800s. And it is thanks to the wonderful sharing spirit of Mr. Jackson. It is a wonderful thing that he is doing and I would like to thank him very much. (I believe he is on our list.) I will not make a link to the page until we get a few more things on there, but there will be a link from the Mary Barrett Jackson page and also a link from the index page. It is because of people like Mr. Jackson that we know as much as we do about Reuben Barrett and our family. He has carefully protected our heritage as his sister and his grandfather did. I am very excited about this project, but as I said it will take awhile to get set up. I will let everyone know as soon as I get the link up. Several people have sent me new information in the last couple of weeks for the website. Gerry Dickens sent some on the Reuben Barrett, Jr., and Steve Mitchell sent data on the John Napoleon Barrett line (which includes some Watson data). Hallie and Larry Johnson sent many many pictures of Tyger Cemetery in South Carolina. Betty Neimann has sent the court transcripts of Bill Bobo's murder charges and also the prison record of my great great grandfather Steven Barrett. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to share this valuable data with all of us. I believe we have the most valuable and extensive research data on the Reuben Barrett Family and it is all because of you all. I am very proud of all of you and I am proud to be a part of a family who is caring and doesn't give a second thought to sharing or trying to help someone in their quest of genealogy. I would love to hear any comments or suggestions, or just a hello from everyone. Hugs, Janet Barrett Walker

Don't worry for a moment. We are shirttail relatives through your husband and my aunt and yet directly related, what 3rd cousins? I have forgotten exactly. Must look that one up to. We are moving in March, 10 miles closer to town and therefore, closer to the LDS Library there. So, there is hope for me to get more done in the genealogy dept. I am packing, as you can imagine, and living in more of a mess each day. Will be glad when I am reorganized and up and running again. Give me to April. One reason to move is to be closer to the grandchildren and daughters in town. We have such fun. And, .. .. Ross and I loved parenting our own and see this as a continuation of that. To all researchers, keep up the good work. I 'lurk' here occasionally, and hope to contribute more with time. Here is a message I received from Sheryn concerning the Gallatin name. Since it also mentions Lewis and Clark, I thought it would be of general interest. Following are my comments, also. Karen Hett ---------------- As an aside, the Gallatin River in Montana is one of three rivers that are the source of the Missouri, meeting near Three Forks, MT. The other two are the Jefferson and the Madison Rivers. This is a fact. I believe, they were named by either Lewis or Clark on their exploration 1805 and 1806, when they were in the area. (I know L & C began in 1804, but they did not get to MT until 1805). When I find my glasses I can do more research to refine the namers of the River. If it is important to anyone. Sheryn Welburn ------------- Thanks for this interesting side note, Sheryn. I think all of this helps to confirm the fact that the original Albert Gallatin was a man of fame, at least in his day. I may have said this before, but I was told back in my early days of research that we should recognize that, when families named a child after a famous American, we can be sure that this will tell us not only whom the family admired, but also what their political sentiments were. It's a good tidbit to add to the person's biographical sketch; and it's important that we keep in mind that our ancestors were true patriots who loved their country passionately. And speaking of Lewis and Clark, remember that this is the Bicentennial celebration year and that there are many events to commemorate their famous trek west. And a side note, sorry to bore you: Sheryn's grandparents and my husband's mom's family were neighbors in the early days of North Dakota homesteading; the local historical museum (Alexander, N. D.) is called the Lewis and Clark Trail Museum. Although it focuses on early settlers and not on Lewis and Clark, stop if you go through and ask about the Timmreck's and the Rogers' museum displays. It's a small world. Karen Hett

Barrett will be memorialized along with his first wife Hannah, during a memorial service at Tyger Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina on Sunday, May 25, 2003. A family member of a Barrett descendent will preach the Sunday morning sermon at Tyger Baptist Church, followed by a ceremony in the adjoining cemetery to dedicate the new headstone marking the graves of Reuben and Hannah Barrett. Until now, the graves have been marked only by two fieldstones with the initials R.B. and H.B. carved into them. The cost of the double headstone grave marker will be approximately $1730.00. Barrett descendents also hope to obtain approval and place an emblem from the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution on the headstone, which will require additional funds. I don't mean to say we have a missing link but the last thing we want to do is picture of the 2 rock with RB and HB on them, I have looked at many graves and I have lots of questions about these stones being placed in 1812, I am not saying that they are not buried there but no one as offered the proof that I have seen, maybe I missed it and if so would someone tell me what it is so I can put my mind to rest on this, The RB and HB just are not worn and are to clean to be 1812 and under one of the stone you can see a larger rock maybe someone placed these there so they could be seen better and the real stones are at ground level. Please if I am wrong then let me know I as much as any Barrett want this to be there grave and hope that we are right but show me the proof we will need it. Nancy, I understand how life can keep everyone busy. I would like to schedule a time that those of us working on the Reunion can all get together in the chat room and see where we all stand. And what still needs to be done. If you all can find a free time. Hugs, Janet
Janet, Once again, thank you for making our Ancestry come alive. The chat room is a wonderful idea and addition to all of our other resources now available. Research has not been a priority with me lately due to other family and church obligations but I really appreciate everything that you, Karen, Jim, and all of our other cousins are doing for us. I signed in on the chat room this morning and though no one was there at the time, everything seemed in order. I'll surely look forward to catching up with all of you in the near future. God Bless! Does anyone have any info on twins being born in December of 1849. Jacob Allen Barrett (I am told probably descends from Arthur or Rueben) was born then. I am told he had a twin brother. He married Lettie Austin and died in Austin County, Texas. I am trying to trace these Barretts back to Virginia or Ireland. My g-grandfather's name was James (he was the eldest son) and we think that this could have been his father's name too. I find only 3 James on the 1850 census. They were located in Houston, Lumpkin and Pike counties. There is a Reuben in Lumpkin County. Jacob had a grandson named Reuben. and a son named Arthur.
