    3. If someone, with a digital camera, is in the vicinity of Tyger Church I sure would like to have a single picture that shows both of the stone. I would like for the picture to be taken from the side to show the initials. The only thing I have seen so far is pairs of pictures that show one stone each. Thanks. It looks like a lot of us have connections to towns and people named for the original Albert Gallatin. Here's a bit of biographical information to help us appreciate why our Barrett ancestors thought he was important. Karen Hett Gallatin, Abraham Alfonse Albert (1761-1849) -- also known as Albert Gallatin -- of Fayette County, Pa. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, January 29, 1761. Democrat. Delegate to Pennsylvania state constitutional convention, 1790; member of Pennsylvania state house of representatives, 1790-92; U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, 1793-94; U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania 11th District, 1795-1801; U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, 1801-14; U.S. Minister to France, 1815-23; U.S. Minister to Great Britain, 1826-27. His portrait appeared on the $500 U.S. Note in the 1860s. Died in Astoria, Queens, Queens County, N.Y., August 12, 1849. Entombed at Trinity Churchyard, New York, N.Y. Gallatin counties in Ill., Ky. and Mont. are named for him. Books about Albert Gallatin: John Austin Stevens, Albert Gallatin: An American Statesman; L. B. Kuppenheimer, Albert Gallatin's Vision of Democratic Stability.

    3. And, in the "huh, how about that!" department of "it's a small world", I was born in Gallatin, TN, making me the only one in my immediate family not born in MS. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 31, 2003 9:38 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [Barrett-Reuben-SC] Sharyn's and Karen's comments Here is a message I received from Sheryn concerning the Gallatin name. Since it also mentions Lewis and Clark, I thought it would be of general interest. Following are my comments, also. Karen Hett ---------------- As an aside, the Gallatin River in Montana is one of three rivers that are the source of the Missouri, meeting near Three Forks, MT. The other two are the Jefferson and the Madison Rivers. This is a fact. I believe, they were named by either Lewis or Clark on their exploration 1805 and 1806, when they were in the area. (I know L & C began in 1804, but they did not get to MT until 1805). When I find my glasses I can do more research to refine the namers of the River. If it is important to anyone. Sheryn Welburn ------------- Thanks for this interesting side note, Sheryn. I think all of this helps to confirm the fact that the original Albert Gallatin was a man of fame, at least in his day. I may have said this before, but I was told back in my early days of research that we should recognize that, when families named a child after a famous American, we can be sure that this will tell us not only whom the family admired, but also what their political sentiments were. It's a good tidbit to add to the person's biographical sketch; and it's important that we keep in mind that our ancestors were true patriots who loved their country passionately. And speaking of Lewis and Clark, remember that this is the Bicentennial celebration year and that there are many events to commemorate their famous trek west. And a side note, sorry to bore you: Sheryn's grandparents and my husband's mom's family were neighbors in the early days of North Dakota homesteading; the local historical museum (Alexander, N. D.) is called the Lewis and Clark Trail Museum. Although it focuses on early settlers and not on Lewis and Clark, stop if you go through and ask about the Timmreck's and the Rogers' museum displays. It's a small world. 3. If you have registered at the Quality Inn Haywood, 50 Orchard Park Dr, Greenville, SC (864) 297-9000, and want to be counted as part of our attempt to reserve a block of at least 15 room, which will give us free use of their meeting room, please let me know. I have found no indication of problems with the reservations. The problem I have found is people who think they have been included in our group haven't. Please let me know what name you have reserved your room(s) under and how many rooms you reserved. The room count has gone from 5 yesterday morning to 8 this morning. Please send your message to me, not the list. After I have conformed that you are on their list as part of our reunion group I'll reply back to you. Thanks for your help. 3. Janet and friends, I received this note this am. I've instructed Susan to mail the letter, and I should be ready to send to DAR in a couple of days. I spoke to a friend in DAR, and she said the stones in the cemetery, along with the presence of Reubens 2nd wife's grave in the same place, should provide sufficient "evedence", so I'm going to print the page from your site with the photos to send along. 1. [Barrett-Reuben-SC] Barrett Reunion - Status Update
    2. Jim Barrett
    3. Barrett marker - Our current balance is $1,100.00. We need a total of about $1,730 for the proposed marker and the DAR emblem. If I order the proposed marker, I will have to pay $810 when I place the order, by March 3, 2003. At that time we'll be $630 short of the total needed. If we are able to order the DAR marker I'm sure I'll be required to pay the full amount for it, about $110, when it is ordered. We need more money and we need it now. The proposed marker is shown on the bottom of half of http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~barrettbranches/marker.html . The marker at the top of the page has nothing to do with what I plan to order. Please don't be confused. Motel - I checked with the motel today. I was told we had 7 rooms reserved. I'm not sure that is correct and I'll be checking on this again in the next day or two. To be able to use their meeting room we must have 15 rooms paid for. Once again. If you haven't reserved your room you must do so by April 20. Please don't wait until then. You could miss out on a room with the group if you wait and we all could miss out on the meeting room. Name tags - As you know Dina is not going to be able to join us at the reunion, therefore Karen Hett, my wife, Jan, and I are taking on the name tags also. Currently we plan to designs for a 'pin on' name tag; one will be for descendants of Reuben and Hannah, the other will be for the (husband, wife, spouse, child, friend, and/or guest) of a descendant. We'll come up with other designs if needed. My tag will look like this: Jim Barrett Reuben Barrett - Hannah John Barrett - Rebecca Stanton John R. Barrett - Martha Sewell Isaac Parino Barrett, Sr. - Mary T. Edwards Isaac Parino Barrett, Jr. - Blanche Holden James Parino Barrett - Janelle Magness Jan's tag will look like this: Janelle Magness Barrett wife of Jim Barrett Reuben Barrett - Hannah John Barrett - Rebecca Stanton John R. Barrett - Martha Sewell Isaac Parino Barrett, Sr. - Mary Teliclar Edwards Isaac Parino Barrett, Jr. - Blanche Holden James Parino Barrett - Janelle Magness The top line of each tag will be in a larger font. If you plan to attend please send me the information for your tag(s). One for you and one for each person who will be with you. Please do not send the information to the list. Send it to me at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> . Not sure if you'll be able to make the reunion, send me your information. The tags will not be printed until you register at the reunion, but it will save a lot of time if I'll already have the information. Special thanks to all of you who have already made your reservations, made your marker donation, sent out letters, and/or wishes us a good time because you won't be able to attend. Our Hemingways married McDaniel & Mitchells who married Barretts. I think there were McCool's married some where along the line into our other branches, too. 3. Karen, Donna, Jim and List, I was asking this same question about 10 years ago. Arthur and Mary Caradine Barrett of Neshoba County, MS, named a son "Massey J." Probably named for the relatives in SC. Born in MS in 1838, appears Massey J. (M.J.) Barrett died in the Civil War; his Civil War record is incomplete. "Barrett, M.J., Private, Co. C "Quitman Southrons," Leake Co, mustered into State service at Carthage July 21, 1861. Mustered into Confederate service at Grenada August 24, 1861." Source: H. Grady Howell, Jr., GOING TO MEET THE YANKEES, Chickasaw Bayou Press, Jackson, MS:1981, p. 318. Bob Jackson says that a person by the name of Massey Arrowsmith lived in Greenville, and that tracing his origin might be a clue as to where the Jacksons and/or Barretts moved from. In this case, Massey probably originated as a surname. I might also say this: Massey is also a nickname for "Matthew." It derives from a childish pronunciation of "Matty." 2. In a message dated 2/2/03 12:11:09 PM, [email protected] writes: <<He has agreed to put all the old documents on our website from the Dr. Jackson Archives. >> Janet and group: Well, there is a qualification here. Bob says that it would be impossible ever to put ALL the documents on one website, because there are in excess of a thousand of them. He is re-writing an introduction to his grandfather's correspondence but says that he will need to look again at some of the original papers, which are back at home, before he can finish writing. He wants to look at some specific documents in order to clarify particular points in question. Therefore, the project is on hold for the time being. It may be late spring before we are able to post anything for you to view, but please be aware that it is coming! There is a wealth of important information in these papers, both for Jackson and for Barrett researchers and biographers. We need to salute Bob for his willingness to share. This is, indeed, a treasure trove. Karen Hett
