    2. Karen, Among the 106 people who signed the petition for the Pardon of Steve Barett were: G.M.Mabry (who was sheriff)Wm Viser,Anthony Viser, Thomas B. Viser D.M., S. Manning, A.L. Manning, J.J. Faulk who was the ex-DA who prosecuted the case, F.W. Williams who was the presiding judge on the case, 10 of the original jurors on the both cases, The superintendant of the Huntsville prision. The district clerk of Madison county R. Wiley, Faulk wrote a three page explanation of what happened in the case and why he thought he had made a mistake by convicting him. And J.M. Gillespie who knew who did it but wasn't called as a witness in the trial. Harmon Boazeman and Jim McIver are the two men who stole the horses and were known as "man McIver was a notorious bad character" "I know Boazeman was an old hardened criminal" I will get it all typed up as soon as I can. Hugs, Janet

    3. Dad passed away three years ago but told all of us kids many stories, He was born in 1909 in the Greenbrier Community right up the road from the Greenbrier cemetery. He told us the story of the horse thief as some referred to Stephen Barrett. He said there were a few who still called him that even after death but that my grandfather Benjamin Franklin Risinger stood up for him one day in Church and said Robt had been framed. That is so ironic how there were others that used that same statement" Framed". Mom remembers Louie Barrett from family get togethers, they were cousins and were the same age. She said they called him Frank or Frankster when they were kids. This may be your Louie .Hard to think of my 82 years old mom ever being a kid. We are off to a wedding in Marble Falls but I will call mom tomorrow and pick her brain on some of the stories about family on your down line. Mom was born in Connors in 1921 but they moved to Myrtle Beach for a year or two before moving back to Madisonville and that is where she met dad Love Deb ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 07, 2003 11:15 PM Subject: Re: [Barrett-Reuben-SC] Steven Barrett was innocent!!!! > In a message dated 3/7/03 10:25:53 PM Central Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > > > Dad told us the > > family stood behind him and always knew he was innocent. > > Deb, > Is there anything else your Dad remembers about him? 3. Janet, Mister Hubert Barrett always said he was not guilty and that he was framed (was his words) Roy Barrett was researching and came on to this info and we were all setting at the table when Roy made his statement. WOW!!! Mister Hubert and Grand Grand got mad and told him, "Not true and Grand Grand got her paddle, (that always was close to the table) and said " Don't you ever say that again." When Roy was visiting my Roy we got to talking about that and so glad you cleared this up. Thank you for getting the info. Can't wait to forward this to my kids. Steve's son William Barrett was my great grandfather, Louie Barrett was my grandfather, they were both born in Madisonville. Maybe your Dad remembers them? It is a very intresting story, I can't wait to get it all typed up to share it with everyone. Hugs, Janet

I do have the paper I filled out of Ancestor's Services before me. The References I gave were: Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby Gilmer Moss, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 3. Janet, Great job,I am so happy for you.I didn't realize until I just read this that it was your gg grandfather who was accused of that crime. Dad told us the family stood behind him and always knew he was innocent. I know for a fact after tracing our family there may have been a few black sheep but hard to believe there were criminals. The Barrett's that I have come to know were loving, hard working, honest Christians who loved their country. Hopefully others will see there is light beyond that road block and sharing the smallest fact may turn into a great discovery. 2. Halleluyah!!! I'm so happy for you.I know it can be very disappointing at times but suddenly from out of nowhere, a blessing comes. I wish I could have a dab of luck finding mariage license, death data etc. on Miles and Olly Barrett both. I have death data on my grandmother but that's all.I found a newer picture of her, made about 1960 or 1961 when she came and spent the weekend with us.If some one has a copy of John Napolean & Elizabeth's marriage license, that would be great if they would share.Again, that's GREAT !!! As ever, Gaye

I don't think you can give a state at all; most researchers think probably Virginia or North Carolina. Even Delaware is a possibility. Reuben's sister and brothers seem to have appeared out of nowhere, and researchers have been looking for their origin for 40 years at least. His approximate year of birth can be figured from his age, which was given in one of the military papers. That's it.

    2. Marilyn, Would it be asking too much for copies of Reuben's data in regard to my application for DAR membership? I do, most assuredly, appreciate all the help you have so generously given thus far. Hope you are well. Are there any photos of John Napolean and his family available?? I would really love to find one of Miles and Lula.Again, a MILLION thanks. As Ever,Gaye

    2. Keith Dowdy
    3. Update on DAR Marker progress: _Today rec'd copies of original documents which are fairly certain to be acceptable documentation of Reuben's residence in SC when he died, his marriage to T. Prince, his military service, and his residence in SC during Rev. War. _Today rec'd letter from Tyger Church that has corrections and inclusions requested by DAR and signed off by pastor. _Still looking for documentation of Reuben Barrett's birth date and birth place. All I can find is "probably b. SC abt 1756". This is what I entered on the original application and the letter from the Historian General asked for documentation. IF ANYONE HAS ANY OTHER DOCUMENTS WHICH WOULD HELP I WOULD APPRECIATE A COPY FOR THIS APPLICATION. Marilyn
