Steven, My grandmother's sister,Francis Louise aka Fannie Lou Bareett has a daughter who lives in Alexandria,La. She said She and her husband put markers on Miles 'grave. It may be Burch Bareet, the son of Miles. I'll try getting in touch with her.She is quite a spry youngster of 80. Thanks again for your kindness. Gaye
William Grant is definitely in the family line. My sister-in-law has all the connections, which I keep getting confused with all the Marys and Sarahs in the family. But I believe he was married to Keturah Barrett. Kathy, please confirm or correct. Linda Evans
Gaye, I am the great nephew of Susan Margaret Mitchell Barrett, w/o Richard Stancil Barrett, s/o John Napoleon. Aunt Susie is the sister of my GGrandfather, William James Mitchell. All my Mitchell's are originally from TN and lived in Madison County since just before 1850. No Choctaw Mitchell's in our line to my knowledge. Looks like the Cleveland Courthouse & Library is going to be much more important stop than I'd originally planned. My Mitchell Grandparents lived in the Cleveland area most of their lives. My dad was born in Ruleville and all are buried in Drew. I've tried finding a Boyle Cem. in the LDS and Newberry libraries but to no avail. Perhaps one doesn't exist and my walk-thru the cem. may be the start of one. That Mayes name rings a bell with me, but I don't know why. I'll look around my den to see if I can find why. Are you aware of a discrepancy re Rutha Cabiness Moore Barrett's place of burial? Has anyone ever actually seen her tombstone? I have a note in my file that she's buried in Anding, Forsyth Co., GA., but I'm not sure where the note came from, nor did I ever look up Anding to see if it actually existed. Today the question of her interment came up and I learned there is no Anding anywhere in the U.S. except for Yazoo County, MS. Looks like I'll be taking a walk in Anding come May...... Gaye, I will be traveling MS on a family search trip in May and will be in the Boyle, Cleveland, Ruleville, Merigold area. I'd be more than happy to look for Miles Barrett and any other Barrett...... There is the Old Boyle Cemetery, Hwy 61N, one mile South of Boyle. I'll be photographing many of our family tombstones in Attalla, Bolivar, Sunflower and Madison counties....... I have a question, or curiosity, you might say, about William Grant Barrett, s/o Arthur Barrett and Mary Caradine. Why did Arthur and Mary name their son William Grant? Was it after a family member? There was a William Grant who married Elizabeth Boone, sister of Daniel Boone, the frontiersman. William traveled with Daniel and fought with him in various campaigns and uprisings. William and Elizabeth's daughter, Mary Grant, married Moses Mitchell, whose issue was of about 8 children. Family lore has it that our family is related to these Boone/Grant/Mitchell principals, but I have not been able to prove out. I keep seeing the Grant name pop-up in our family ancestry, and this William Grant Barrett has my curiosity up. I know the naming paradigms of first names down thru family lineages, but it seems a lot of middle names come from the last name of the wife's or other parentage. We have other similarities in the family [Pacific Lamberson (Mitchell) Barrett, George Turner Mitchell, John Whitten Barrett, etc.] I know I'm probably rambling here, but does anyone have any thoughts on this? This has always intrigued me, but I have never had an answer. Perry Lysander Barrett (s/o Wm. Grant Barrett) had too many mouths to feed in MS. At one point, about 1910, he was trying to feed over 20 women and children -- all of them his children, grandchildren, nieces & nephews. When she was 16, my grandmother was sent to Columbus, GA to work in a cotton mill. Eventually, her brother, all her sisters, her mother (Lillie Leona Barrett McCarty) and Perry Lysander Barrett followed her there. My father remembers that they were a very close knit family. He says that, if it had been possible, they would have all lived on the same city block. I guess you could say that better food and shelter caused these Barretts to move from MS to GA. Janet, my 1st cousin, LTC Alan Keith Stone, is in Kuwait. He was deployed about a month ago and although we don't know exactly where he is or what he's doing, we know that he's in harm's way. Also my daughter's cousin on her dad's side is in Korea-SAIC B.R. Higgason. Thank you for the prayers. Janet, How are you today?? Hope to heaven you received GOOD news,I pray you did anyway. Just wanted to let you know my cousin and I were invited to the next DAR meeting in West Monroe,La. on April 12th. I am thrilled beyond words. Thanks to Marilyn and her generousity in helping me , maybe,I'll get a foot in the door. Do you know where John Napolean was born??Is there any proof of his relationship to Joseph and Reuben? I know I've read the data on the website but will the DAR accept that as proof?? If you would like to keep that copy of grandmother's picture, you can since I have another copy.I wish to goodness we could find a birth record on her and her marriage license. But I'm thankful to have what I do. Take care, Always looking UP ,never down. Our prayers , Love and your own Daith in GOD will see you through. Love, Gaye
Hello Everyone, As I am sure everyone has been watching the news and knows we have so many soldiers over in Kuwait. I was wondering if anyone else in our family has men or women over there? I was thinking of making a page on the website to honor them. Myself, I have two cousins over there both in their early 20's. I have put out the yellow ribbons and pray for their safety. Of course this project won't start until I get caught up on the address books and the website. Janet
Gaye, I recieved the picture of your Grandmother Ollie Barrett Mayes in the mail today. It is a eonderful picture. Do you need me to scan it and send it back like I did the ones before? Thank you for the beautiful card!! Your kind words touched my heart. You are one of the reasons I am so proud to be a part of this loving and caring family. Janet
Hi Janet, I think that is a wonder idea. I have a niece leaving for Turkey tomorrow and a nephew in Afghanistan. Gaye, I have gr grandmothers buried in West Monroe. They are not Barrett's, but Horne and Young, from Newton MS. The names are their Maiden Names. Are you actually living in West Monroe? I have more questions to ask you, if you have the time. Sheryn Barrett Welburn [email protected] wrote: > Janet, How are you today?? Hope to heaven you received GOOD news,I pray you > did anyway. Thanks Sarah, Have a nice visit. Janet
Janet, when I get home in a couple weeks, I'll scan the picture and send you a copy for the web page. Sarah Barrett Everage
Sarah, I would love to have copies to put on their webpages on the Barrett Branches website. janet
I have a picture of William Lafayett "Bud" Barrett and three of his brothers. I can't tell you their names right now because I'm in Temple, TX visiting my son. When I get back home to Alabama, (in April) I'll be glad to send a copy to anyone who is interested. These are the sons of Utley, I believe, and they were old men when the picture was made. Deb, There are several Choctaw cemeteries around the reservation. There is a Catholic Choctaw cemetery and a Methodist one, I think. But I imagine that the party mentioned as buried in the Blackjack Choctaw Cemetery is in fact buried in the Blackjack Baptist Cemetery. I attended the Blackjack Baptist Church as a child with my father and grandmother. The cemetery is large and very well kept. There are a number of Barretts buried there. I thought that I didn't know the Barrett gentleman mentioned, but when someone posted his descendents, I realized who he was. My Mother, who will be 90 in a few months will know all the connections. Sarah Barrett Everage (Becky)
Thanks Becky, I remember reading a while back when helping my sister in law about several of those cemeteries. Amariah was a Methodist minister and his son WHH was a Baptist minister. We have family buried in those areas on my husband's side ,I too hope to be able to visit there some day. My husband is part Choctaw and it is a very fascinating research, Take care, Deb ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2003 9:24 AM Subject: Re: [Barrett-Reuben-SC] Leroy Barrett > Deb, There are several Choctaw cemeteries around the reservation.
