    1. [BARRETT-DNA] Changes To myFTDNA Website
    2. Jim Barrett
    3. I hope all of you take time to check your myFTDNA website from time to time.  FTDNA has been making a lot of changes.  One that I just learned about is the ability to print your own certificates.  The last I knew you received one Y-DNA certificate and one mtDNA certificate.  Of course you had to test for these to get the certificate.   If you upgraded you didn't get a new certificate unless you paid for it.  Now you can go to your myFTDNA website and look under the Y-DNA group and/or the mtDNA group and you'll find a link to print a certificate showing all of your results.  This option does not appear if you haven't received results yet.   Thanks. 3. Kit 177306 has been added with markers 1 - 67.  There are several close and one exact match with this kit at 37 markers.  Please think about upgrading to 67 markers if you are one of these kit holders.   Please be sure to keep your contact information at FTDNA current and notify me of e-mail address changes.  Please provide both the old and the new address so I can delete the old one.  I hate to see people removed from the mailing list because I don't have a current e-mail address.   Thanks. 1. [BARRETT-DNA] Update Coming
    2. Jim Barrett
    3. A message from your "myFTDNA" website.   "Important Message From Family Tree DNA! We are planning an upgrade of all Y-DNA STR (short tandem repeat) related functions. The upgrade will include changes to how STR micro-alleles and palindromic STRs are displayed. It will also change the matching algorithm to utilize an improved calculation for micro-allele and palindromic STR mutations. The result will be more accurate matches and time to a common ancestor calculations. We will provide additional information before the changes are implemented. For your convenience, we suggest that you download your Y-DNA Results and Y-DNA matches for historical purposes." 3. Hi Jim, Thanks so much for your informative message. After I emailed you I did looked around and located the personal website that had been set up for me. I also read a number of the site links and felt I was getting a little clearer picture of how things worked and what was significant to look for. Your message confirmed my feelings and added other important insights. I will continue to explore the FTDNA site for additional information and helps that might prove useful. By the way, I have already been contacted by Marion Barrett and a couple of other individuals who do not share the same surname. Best, Bob ________________________________________ From: barrett-dna-bounces@rootsweb.com [barrett-dna-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jim Barrett [parino@flash.net] Sent: Friday, April 30, 2010 6:39 PM To: barrett-dna@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BARRETT-DNA] Our Website Bob, My kit is 4587. We are a genetic distance of 19 on 37 markers. In simplest of term (of exactly right) genetic distance is the sum of the differences on all of the markers being compared. Based on this you must be looking at someone other than me. This distance is far to great for us to share a common paternal ancestor. At some point FTDNA sent you a kit number, a password and a link for getting to your personal website they set up for you. You need to follow those directions. When you get to your "myFTDNA" website save the link in your list of favorites. Then you'll be able to use that link to get to your "myFTDNA" without having to use the kit number and password. In the left hand column click on "Matches" under Y-DNA. Skip over the 12 marker matches. Looking at the 25 marker matches you'll see one match that is a genetic distance (gd) of 1 and 5 that are a gd of 2. William David Barrett does not have a number following his name. This tells you he has only been tested to 25 markers. All of the men who are a gd of 2 have a number following their name. That number is the number of markers they have been tested to so far. Of the 5 who have tested beyond 25 markers 4 are listed in you 37 marker matches. Of those 4 only one has the Barrett surname and he hasn't test past 37 markers. I'd like to see him upgrade. You could upgrade to see what happens to your 2 non-Barrett matches. You are right. The closer you match the greater the possibility that you are related, but you need to be looking at a 37 marker test or greater. FTDNA stops listing 37 marker matches at a gd of 4 which means if the distance is greater than that they don't believe you are related. On a report that I can see, at 37 markers you are a gd of 5 from Charles Barrett and a gd of 6 from Ty Barrett. You next match is a gd of 12 which is too far to be meaningful. To make it easier for you to find these people Marlon is kit 155970, Charles is 76050 and Ty is 61058 Jim Barrett - Timpson, TX Please Help Benjaman Kyle http://home.flash.net/~parino/bkyle.htm Barrett Surname DNA Project http://www.flash.net/~parino/barrett-family-dna-project.htm Powell Surname DNA Project http://www.flash.net/~parino/powell-surname-dna-project.htm --- On Fri, 4/30/10, Robert T Barrett <robert_barrett@byu.edu> wrote: From: Robert T Barrett <robert_barrett@byu.edu> Subject: Re: [BARRETT-DNA] Our Website To: "barrett-dna@rootsweb.com" <barrett-dna@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, April 30, 2010, 4:06 PM Hi Jim, It is exciting to see my test results with markers added to the Barrett DNA site. I'm curious now how one goes about finding connections and how close the markers need to be to verify the relationship. For example, as I compare my 37 markers with yours I find that we are identical on 25 of the 37 and the other 12 are only on digit different from each other. Does that mean we are related and, if so, how closely? I noticed as I compared my markers (NC-8) to other lines such as NC-5 that I am identical on 32 of 37. I would think that I am more closely related to that line. Am I understanding things correctly? Thanks for taking time to help me understand how this works and what the results mean. If that is not possible, would you mind sending the following info to your project members via the bulk facility?  I'd be very grateful for any assistance.  Thanks so much, Roberta Estes (Hatteras Island Project Admin) Hatteras Island DNA Projects Hatteras Island is a very unique place with an incredibly interesting history and geography as well. ·       Hatteras Island is the location where the Lost Colonists indicated that they went, to join their friends, the Croatoan Indians. ·       Hatteras Island has a long history of shipwrecks, with many families carrying the oral history that they descend from shipwreck victims. ·       Hatteras Island has an equally long oral history that many of the current residents descend from the original residents, the Croatoan (later the Hatteras) Indians. ·       Early records confirm his history in various ways.  For example, by 1710, the Farrows, O'Neals, Hoopers and Wahabs were reported to be "half Indian and half English".  ·       The isolated geography of Hatteras Island served to discourage a lot of movement to the island after the initial land grants were awarded and free/cheap land was no longer available.  ·       The isolated geography prevented or discouraged intermarriage with people not island residents, creating a rather closed community, allowing us the unique opportunity to reconstruct the original island residents from their descendants today. I have compiled a list of early island surnames from deeds, wills, tax lists, militia and other documents.  These surnames represent the early island residents up through about 1800.  We would like to be able to reconstruct the ethnicity of the earliest island families, especially the wives whose surnames have been lost to time.  Using DNA, we will be able to reconstruct those families and help people who cannot identify their ancestors' families to reconnect.
