I recently order an obit for a friend of mine from the Newport News Public Library http://engagedpatrons.org/database/NNObits/index.cfm Much to my surprise there was part of a Barrett obit included. Searching the obit index again I found it was for Harry Lawrence Barrett whose obit was published July 27, 1974 in the Daily Post. The portion I received reads, "A native of Gary, Ind, he was a Newport News resident for five years and was a retired driver of a trucking company. Survivors include two daughters, Miss Ilene Barrett and Miss Judy Barrett and three sons, Frank Barrett, Mike Barrett and H. Lawrence Barrett, Jr., all of Indiana: one sister, Mrs. Edith Duncan of Street, Md., and one brother, Ashley S. Barrett of Newport News. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p. m. Monday in Peninsula Funeral Home by Rev. O. W. Thomas of Newport News Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery." I have no additional information on this family. Dear List, My name is Bruce P Barrett. I am a descendant of John Barritt b: circa 1736 in Rothwell, Northamptonshire, England. John married Susannah Watson 19 Oct 1761 at Kettering. He died Jan 1819 at Walgrave, Northamptonshire. My 2nd great grandfather is their son Thomas b: 15 Mar 1775 and baptized 9 Jul 1775 at St Peter Church in Walgrave. Thomas came to America about 1790-95. He lived and died in Tazewell County, Virginia. My link and the Barrett line in Utah has been proved with the normal genealogical documentation and Y-DNA. I have loaded my research to a DVD that functions like a Web Page. I am willing to provide a free copy of the DVD to any descendants of John, his siblings and or his ancestors that I don't have in my database. I require a list of direct ancestors that link to a Barritt from the Walgrave area or matches or closely matches the Y-DNA for FTDNA kit # 5231 shown at http://jpbdna.com/barrett-family-dna-project.htm. You can contact me at brucepbarrett@roadrunner.com Thanks Bruce P Barrett Heath, Ohio
The first weekend in November I attended the FTDNA conference in Houston. To me, one of the most important and most exciting announcements came when FTDNA told us of changes coming to myFTDNA. I believe it was two days ago they released myFTDNA 2.0 beta to project admins. There are going to be a lot of changes and I think you will like most of them. They have added an Advanced Matching page that allows you to see information about all of your matches with a person: Y-DNA, mtDNA and Family Finder at one time. Another change we will be seeing is the reporting of micro alleles. If you have looked at results from other companies you may have already seen this. Some alleles are reported with a decimal point. Rather than seeing a value of 15 you might see a value of 15.2. Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation is one of those companies. This will not require additional testing as FTDNA has know the micro allele value all along. FTDNA will be adopting National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) method of reporting results. Many companies have already done this. Doing so will make it easier for us to compare our results to those of these other companies. In the past, when FTDNA has adopted a new way of reporting a marker they have adjusted the values in all of their databases. You won't have to change anything, but I will. I let you know more about this. They are adding some new mapping features. For these to be a value ALL of us need to be sure our information is correct. Please, go to your myFTDNA website, click on "Plot Ancestral Locations" under the My Maps heading in the left hand column. There is a place for "Most Distant Known Paternal Ancestor" and one for "Most Distant Known Maternal Ancestor". One at a time click on the edit button and enter what your know giving name, date of birth and date of death. If you don't know the information just enter what you do know. Click the "Next Step" button and enter a location using coordinates or by entering names. Give as much detail as you know. I do suggest you select an ancestor where you know at least one date, even if year only, and a place, even if only the country. I can't give you a date. I'm sure it will depend, at least in part, on the changes those of us testing the new system find. For those of you who don't have FTDNA as a friend on Facebook - REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Nov. 22, 2011 -- Archives.com, a website devoted to making family history simple and affordable, announces another exciting way users can explore their family heritage. Archives has partnered with Family Tree DNA, the world leader in genetic genealogy, to enable users to purchase DNA tests through its website for the first time. These are being offered at up to 30 percent off the regular price for a limited time. Archives recognizes that DNA testing plays a critical role in family history research, and is glad to offer a simple, convenient way for users to get started with genetic genealogy. The growing field of genetic genealogy utilizes science to tell us more about our ancestors, and maternal and paternal lineages. Family Tree DNA can help researchers to verify known connections or uncover previously unknown ethnic ties with the world's largest genetic genealogy database of over 350 thousand records, several times larger than the nearest competitor. Archives.com now offers three types of DNA tests: the Y-chromosome DNA test to trace paternal lines and surname matches; the mitochondrial DNA test to determine maternal line matches; and the Family Finder test kit, which tests autosomal DNA to reveal ethnic percentages and trace genes across maternal and paternal lines. Archives Director of Product Joe Godfrey commented, "Genetic genealogy is an extremely exciting field. We've been interested in integrating DNA testing into Archives.com for some time, and I'm glad we are working with Family Tree DNA, the world's largest genetic genealogy database, to make this happen. This initial integration will give users the ability to find historical records and start exploring their genetic genealogy all in one place. In the future, we intend to provide users with more robust tools and resources that will enhance the experience even further." Family Tree DNA VP of Operations Max Blankfeld noted, "We are thrilled to partner with Archives.com, a website we know will play an important role in the future of online family history research. Archives.com provides a genuine alternative to the more expensive websites out there. Easy access to DNA testing will allow Archives.com users to explore this important facet of genealogy research." Archives looks forward to collaborating closely with Family Tree DNA, the community, and project managers, to provide the best integrated experience between the two websites possible. Also Archives encourages people to take advantage of the limited time discount on DNA tests found on Archives.com. To learn more about the benefits of DNA testing, or to order a DNA test, please visit http://www.Archives.com/?_act=dnatesting. You may get two copies of this because I asked Dan Barrett of Canada to send it to his Barrett list. For anyone with contacts in England, France and/or Ireland consider ordering a Barrett Surname DNA kit for them to use while FTDNA is running their sale. Orders may be placed using the following link: http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?code=Y63652&Group=Barrett Select payment by invoice so you don't have to pay until the kit is returned, but they must be paid for by Dec. 31, 2011 to get the sale price. We need kits from these areas and we may have to pay for the kits to get them. Several people can go together using the FTDNA project fund to pay for a kit. If anyone has contact with a male Barrett from the Lough Conn area of Co. Mayo, Ireland please let me know. We do need family trees to go along with the kits. Thanks. Jim Barrett - Timpson, TX

There is no fee to join the group, just go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/isogg-adpt/ and click on the blue "Join This Group" bar. To order a mtDNA test go to your myFTDNA website. Click on the "Order Tests and Upgrades" link in the left hand column. Click on the "GO TO STANDARD ORDERS" under the first section heading. Click on the arrow in the product box and then click on the test you wish to order. I would select either mtDNAPlus or mtDNAFullSequence. You might want to join the group first and get their input on which test to order. FTDNA normally has a sale during some part of Nov.-Dec. which I'll announce on our mailing list as soon as I know about it. I do not know which tests will be included. You also want to remember that mtDNA covers only your maternal line: your mother's, mother's, mother's --- mother. Jim Barrett - Timpson, TX --- On Thu, 10/13/11, Stephen P. She was born in 1844. I notice that the logo covers this situation. Please advise me how to obtain MtDNA when my initial purchase was for 37 markers of Y-DNA. What are the fees for joining ISOGG? McAndrew is included because it is a sept of Barrett in Ireland. Several members of our project, including me, have strong McAndrew matches in Ireland. I'm curious as to how/why the name McAndrew is included in the surname spelling list. Richard Barrett
