Hi John, I'm afraid that the materials I'm planning to transcribe would not be of much help to you, since your wife's ancestors were not from the places I am working with. I think you could progress in your research, though, by consulting the Civil Registration Index for England. You can order microfiche of each quarter-year of the Index for births, marriages, or deaths from the Family History Center (run by the Church of the Latter-Day Saints) in your area. This will give you enough information to order birth, marriage, or death certificates from local register offices or from the central office. You can get more information on this procedure through www.genuki.org.uk. From this basic site for the UK you can go to the Yorkshire site for more specific information. The certificates give information that can confirm what you have as well as provide more. It is probably best to work backwards from George's marriage (ordering the fiche for marriages for all the quarters of 1863 and the first from 1864, as sometimes the registration is late): if there are a number of George Barracloughs in the Index of Marriages, you can look under Sarah Braithwaite; the number will match. The Index alone will confirm the marriage and give you the place. The certificate you send for will give the addresses of George and Sarah at the time of marriage, and their fathers' names and occupations. Sometimes you find other family members listed as witnesses. Once you get the addresses, you can check census records. Since civil registration started in 1837 and not everyone registered events in the early years, you may not find a record of George's birth, but it is worth trying, as the certificate would confirm his father's name and possibly give the address and mother's maiden name. If it's not in the Civil Registration Index, you can go to the parish records of the community (again, these can be ordered from the Family History Center) and confirm the birth and his father's name that way. The genuki site will give you the parishes for your locations. Denby is in the parish of Penistone. Could Hernsworth by Hemsworth? I didn't find Hernsworth, but Hemsworth is a parish in the West Riding of Yorkshire. I did look in the 1841 and 1851 Sheffield census indexes to see if there were any Barracloughs born in Denby. In the 1851 census index I found John B., age 65, born Denby, and Martha, age 64, born Denby Dyke Side, as well as Joseph, 40, Isaac, 27, and Hannah, age 22, born Penistone. All these people were probably living in the same house: the volume number is 2336 and the folio 74B for all of them. Possibly these people were related to your family, but I would start, as I said, with the names you have, and trace them back; perhaps you will come across the Sheffield bunch as cousins or siblings along the way. Hope this has helped. Forgive me if I have told you things you already know. Happy hunting.
