    3. Hi Everyone: This will give you an idea of what a small world it is and how things turn up most unexpectedly. Last Saturday I had decided to spend the afternoon transcribing research material into my tree and writing letters... the telephone rang and I was off on an adventure. My next door neighbour was out driving in the morning with her husband and since it was such a lovely day, stopped in at a tiny, old cemetery about 20 miles west of Cobourg and discovered that it was full of Barrowcloughs. Needless to say, I immediately went to our library and used the cemetery finding aid and other resource files. The following is what I found: >From the 1871 Census for County Durham, Township of Hope (NAC Reel No. C9979) BARROWCLOUGH, John, 50 yrs., born England, Religion - WM, Occupation - farmer 051 A3 21 54 BARROWCLOUGH, eorge, 25 yrs., born Ontario, Religion - WM, Occupation - farmer 051 A3 20 54 >From Parish Transcripts: "Wesleyville United Cemetery, Hope Township, Con. 1, Lot 30. This cemetery is between one and two acres in size. In 1860 land was donated by John Barrowclough from the southwest corner of his farm for a church and cemetery. The church was built that year and some graves moved from plots on local farms. In 1892 more land was purchased from John Barrowclough to enlarge the cemetery..." "In Memory of John Barrowclough. Died Jan. 25, 1892 aged 72 yrs., 5 mos. His wife, Ann Lumley, died June 5, 1903, aged 83 yrs. At Eventide there shall be light. Elijah Barrowclough died April 19, 1938 (Age on stone is 85 yrs.) In loving memory of Harold William Barrowclough, Aug. 23, 1908. Beloved husband of Beatrice McKay, July 29, 1905 - Oct. 12, 1976. Ellen Brightwell, wife of S. Barrowclough, Born Dec. 17, 1865 Died Mar. 16, 1949. Simon Barrowclough, Born June 27, 1867, Died Nov. 1953. Edgar J. Barrowclough Dec. 9, 1903 - Jan. 12, 1971. In memory of Geo. Douglas, son of Rev. G. E. and Mrs. C. Ross 1905-1914. Rev. G.E. Ross, 1864-June 25, 1934, his wife Carrie Barrowclough, born Nov. 24, circa 1865. Died Mar. 6, 1934 (Rev. Ross born nr. Glasgow, Scotland). George Barrowclough May 5, 1845-1925. His wife, Elizabeth Grace Greenaway, born may 20, 1846. Died... Samuel Edson Keat, born Aug. 1860 died June 28, 1944. His wife, Eliza Barrowclough born circa 1852 Died Feb. 19, 1949." All of this information was recorded in 1976 by Edna I. Barrowclough for the local historical society. As I was using the cemetery finding aid in the Local History Room of the library, there was another gentleman in the room while my neighbour and I were chatting away about this wonderful find of "Barrowcloughs" and the gentleman said, "Excuse me, but I couldn't help but overhearing the name Barrowclough and as it is not a common name I thought I would mention that I knew Edna Barrowclough well". You can imagine my surprise. Edna apparently died a few years ago and this man attended her funeral and KNOWS for a fact that Edna, being a historian, had recorded her family history and that all of her papers are stored 'somewhere'. We exchanged telephone numbers and he said that he will get a copy of Edna's papers for me. I photocopied the information from the library and have it here if it is of help to anyone. Once I get Edna's history, I will let you know. Best wishes, Susan
