Hi there, I have joined this list in a hope that someone here may be able to help me. My husband's father and his siblings have all passed away many years ago and we are having such problems trying to find a starting point to trace his family in England. Being in Australia, when all of the relevant archives are in England, makes me so frustrated. LOL! Living in a small country town also complicates things, so well meaning people telling me to got to do a look up at my local LDS Family Center have no idea that it is not possible for me. I have exhausted all of my Wilkinson options as I cannot find any trace of his grandparent's (Percy Wilkinson and Emily Johnstone) births, deaths or marriage. I know that they were married, as she was very religious, but I just can't find any record to prove it :( So, onto the Barraclough connection. My Father in Law's oldest sister, Nellie Wilkinson was married to a Stan Barraclough and they lived in Wibsey, Bradford up until the time they died in the 1980's. I have very limited information on Nellie as my mother in law, now in her 80's suffers from dementia and has lost the memories that might have helped us. She has even lost the memories surrounding her own family in Italy, but that is a story for another time. :) A very kind lady on another list sent me a photograph of the family grave at North Bierley cemetery, Buttershaw, Bradford, Yorkshire the Inscriptions says ... "In loving memory of Walter Henry Barraclough of Wibsey, who died 11th March 1950, aged 75 years, for 32 years a member of The Bradford City Council and Lord Mayor 1943-4. Also of his beloved wife Mary, who died 23rd May 1961 aged 88? years. In loving memory of Christopher Edmund Barraclough, died 1st Jan 1991, aged 44 years. In memory of Magdelene, dearly beloved wife? of Stanley Barraclough died ? March 1942, aged 34 years. Stanley Edmund Barraclough, died 25th May 1989, aged 85 years. Nellie Barraclough, second wife of Stanley Barraclough, 1.12.1900 - 13.10.1980 or 1986?" (I can't quite make out the last date) We had pinned our hopes on locating Christopher, my husband's cousin, but the arrival of the photo has killed these plans. I am hoping, considering that Walter was so prominent a citizen in Wibsey, that someone on this list can lay claim to him and perhaps be able to give me some information of the present generation of Barracloughs. We would especially be interested to know if Christopher had any family of his own. My son may very well be is the last of his line. You can't imagine how frustrating it is to realize that my husband's side of our family tree may always remain lost to us. I am so sorry that I didn't start doing the family tree 20 years ago, when there was still someone who could have filled in the blanks. Hoping to hear from someone, :) Lyn in Australia
Hi Lyn, Welcome to the group. We can certainly help you, and you certainly won't be told to go to your nearest LDS centre :-) You will find Lyn, that compared to Australia, research cost's in England are very expensive for us Aussies, that is due to our rotten Dollar. We have to folk out 3 of our Dollars to 1 of their Pounds. Hence the reason it's so expensive for us :-( to research our ancestors. But I think you will find that the people of Bradford themselves will admit that the charges for the Archives is quiet expensive. But anyway, we don't charge here, and share what ever info we have on all Barraclough's. Your lucky in that I'm doing a study of the surname and collect all Barraclough information from all over the world. And have built up quiet a database of information, especially from the Wibsey area of Bradford. I'm not going to be able to give you much info on the present day Barraclough's of your husbands family, but maybe someone of the list who goes to Bradford Library, might be able to have a look at the Telegraph & Argus Newspaper around the times of the death's in the Monumental Inscriptions and see if there is any mention of other family members. If anyone can help and don't mind doing the lookup could they please let Lyn know. But I can help you with information on the ancestors of Walter Henry Barraclough. I'll work backward. I beleive the parents of Walter Henry Barraclough to be Edmund Barraclough & Alice Ann Brook, who married in the December Quarter of 1873 in the district of Bramley. Reference Number 9b Page 539. But that will need to be confirmed as I got it from the Free Births, Death's & Marriages index on the net. The GRO indexes really should be looked at to make sure they reference number is correct. You can apply for a copy of this marriage certificate from England, but their certificates are not as informative as our Aussie ones are. But you will need this certificate if we can't get the info from another source. Below are the census returns & trade directory entries for Edmund and his family. 1908 Kelly's Trade Directory for Bradford. Edmund Barraclough, 10 Taylor Road, Wibsey (See Brook, Thorp & Co.) Manufacturer. (I know someone with this directory and will ask them to look up the entry for the company of Brook, Thorp & Co.) 1891 Trade Directory for Bradford Edmund Barraclough, Park Lodge Farm, Buttershaw (Tordoff & Barraclough & Co.) (Rob is doing a study of the surname Todoff and is a member of this group as well, Rob do you have anything of this partnership of Tordoff & Barraclough ?) 1901 Census Nth Bierley (This census is on line, and can be downloaded from http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/ but there is a charge for downloading. Barraclough, Daur, 1, born Nth Bierley Wibsey/Butteshaw is in the district of North Bierley. I do know that Edmund and Alice Ann, had more children, as I have their burial entries. Wibsey Wesleyan Methodist Chapel also known as the Wibsey Wesleyan Reform Chapel Rhoda Elizabeth, 11mths, buried 19/1/1878 daur of Edmund & Alice Ann Barraclough of Wibsey, plot number 49A Horace, 3wks, buried 5/5/1882 son of Edmund & Alice Ann Barraclough of Wibsey, plot 49A Stanley Herbert, 16years, buried 13/2/1895 son of Edmund & Alice Ann Barraclough of Wibsey, plot 14A And here is Edmunds burial at the same Church. Edmund Barraclough, 55 years buried 27/5/1907 of 204 Victoria Park, Shipley, plot 44R And here is the Monumental Inscription as transcribed from the Blackburn Register at Bradford Library Page 3, Grave 50 Edmund Barraclough born April 28th 1852 died May 23rd 1907 Alice Ann, his wife born May 22nd 1851 died 22nd Aug. 1902 (there is probably some religous wording, but my cousin Derek Barraclough only provides the names only in his transcript) I don't have a transcript of Alice Ann's burial. It would be my guess that possibly all of Edmund & Alice Ann's children where baptised at this church, but I don't have a transcript of baptisms for this church as yet. If anyone can help with any baptism lookups for this church, could they please let Lyn & I know. Lyn, I can go back another few generations from Edmund, but will leave it here, so that you can digest it all. Sometimes, it get's a bit overwhelming when given to much info in one hit. Glad I can be of some help, and if anyone on the list who visit's the Bradford Library and or Archives, can be of a little help to Lyn, I'm sure she would be most grateful. Oh! by the way, if your wondering, I live in Melbourne.
