Hi Everyone, I need help from someone familiar with creating formula's in Excel. I'm trying to import all the Barraclough entries from the IGI that I have imported into an excel spreadsheet, into my new custodian program. It tell's me that to import into a name field the given name and surname must be in seperate columns. But in the Spouse column the given name and surname are in the one column. Eg: in Column A row 2 is the name. Kim PASQUILL What I need to do is to have the surname removed from A2 and put into another column. Gee I hope this makes sense :-) If anyone can give me the formula to be able to do this I would be MOST greatful, as I've sat her all day, trying to work this darn thing out. Cheers Kim
Hi Kim, Are all the entries in the form "Forename Surname", or are some of them "ForenameA ForenameB Surname"? The necessary formula would be simpler in the first case. If you'd like to send me what you've got as an attachment, I'll have a crack at it, and announce the formula once I'm sure it works! Peter Dauncey South London, UK
Hi Kim, I can tell you how to do it, but not using formulas. You need to save the Excel file as a type CSV (comma separated variable); you can do this from the drop down options. Close the file and reopen it with Notepad (right click and select the Open With option). Turn off the word wrap, in Format. All you need to do now is type a comma between the names. You will also need to add an extra comma onto the first row to make a new column and then name it. Save the file with the changes and reopen it in Excel (by double clicking as normal). You will lose any formatting from the original Excel file, but I don't expect you will have any to worry about. If it saves time you can export directly from Access in CSV format without going into Excel first. If do you find a formula, let me know and I might use it. At the moment I'm sticking to using data as it comes, even though it does cause some problems. Fortunately I don't have to use IGI material very much. I hope this helps. You just need a bit of lateral thinking.
