Dear All, Having lived for 13 years on North Hutchinson Island, (Derek, please note change) I have moved to the mainland of Florida. For 34 years since coming to live in USA, upon being asked for my name, I always said Barraclough and proceeded to spell it. Upon joining a new bank I introduced myself s Barraclough and started off B a r r etc.and the bank "teller" spelt out the rest and smiled. Usually I receive a blank stare and have to start again; our illustrious name being unintelligible and bizarre to the average American, whose names are usually unpronounceable to me. I asked the lady how she knew the spelling, let alone the name, to be told she lived on Barraclough Street locally. Today, having re-read some always interesting messages on Kim's wonderful Barraclough Digests, and having nothing to do, I decided to find Barraclough Street, it not being listed on the local map directory of streets. Found it, a street of 40 houses, BUT, the name is BORRACLOUGH street. Question 1} Is that another known variant of our Wibsey Barraclough? Question 2) For interest, what was the age of the oldest male Barraclough when he ceased to be with us? Does anyone know. PS. I wish to beat him!

I've never seen BORRACLOUGH before,ever ! To start the ball rolling,my father Lucius Barraclough was born June 10th.1902,and died December 21st.1991,aged 89 years 6 months. I have been comparing my notes with Derek's recent list of baptisms for Bradford Parish Church. One omission, from Derek's list that I noticed was that of Abraham baptised 26 November 1620. He was recorded as the illegitimate child of Abraham Webster and Sybill Barraclough. As far as I can tell there was no subsequent marriage. Also as far as I am aware the usual practise was for the illegitimate child to take the mother's surname, that being the case he would have become Abraham Barraclough (another one) and not Abraham Webster. I would be interested if anyone had a definitive answer to this one based upon church practise or law of the early 17th century. Jeff Sutcliffe
