hi lyn I am hoping to get to Bradford the week of 25th oct and also hoping to get to the library to look up another barraclough death in the newspaper archives, so if you give me the date of walters death I can have a look and see if I can find anything, cheers Julie Ellis
Hi Everyone, Just a reminder, to go look at my homepage from time to time. I just re-read a lot of the Messages in my Guest Book and just realised I should remind you all. Amazing the amount of people who give you some of their family history in the Guest Book Pages. Never know you might just find a link. http://users.net2000.com.au/~kmp789/ Especially any newbies. Cheers Kim
Hi Lyn, How interesting that your Wilkson family lived 2 doors down from Arthur's family. They surely would have known each other. As for both Barraclough families being related in some way, nothing surprises me anymore where the Barraclough's are concerned :-) Lyn, given that you have a death date for Walter Henry Barraclough. Have you ever though of asking anyone on the list to have a look for a death notice in the Bradford newspapers. Given he was a Lord Mayor of Bradford and the librarian of Bradford Library ( Boy! I reckon I'd give my eye teeth to have that job) for so long, I would imagine there would be a good article on him. If not, ask away. Many thanks for this Denise, I went back and re-read all about Arthur from this site. The reason Derek sent me the article was to see if we could establish which Barraclough line Arthur comes from. Still have some lookups to find before we can finally work it out. But hopefully in time we will. And better still it would be great to find someone on the list to relate him to. Hi Derek, This is on a bit of a tangent, but the family who lived just 2 doors away at 175 Mill Lane, Bowling between 1871 and 1891 were my WILKINSON family :)) The great granddaughter of this same family, Nellie WILKINSON went on to marry Stanley Edmund BARRACLOUGH some time between 1942 and 1946. I wonder if my Stanley, who was the oldest son of Walter Henry BARRACLOUGH (Mayor of Bradford 1943-4, and chief librarian at Bradford library from 1925 to 1946) is in any way related to your BARRACLOUGH family??? :) Lyn in Australia (still trying to find Jennifer Margaret Barraclough, widow of my husband's cousin Christopher who died in Somerset New Year's day 1991.) Dear Derek, Thank you so much for sending me the article on Arthur Barraclough. What changes he must have seen in the 106years. It is remarkable in itself that he came though the first world war. From Friends' House yesterday and on page 101 of "A Collection of the Sufferings of the People called Quakers" by John Besse: Yorkshire 1660 In the West-riding of this County, the numbers committed to Prison in the Eleventh and Twelfth Months, for refusing to take the Oath, was also very great (229 persons) . Hi All Thanks to Derek and Jeff for the info. Does anyone know the meaning of "Birken"? I ask as it occurs in a few place names in Germany which appear in the autoroute option menu. Regards Anne
birken - "made of or consisting of wood from the birch tree". Cheers, Bruce >Hi All > >Thanks to Derek and Jeff for the info. Does anyone know the meaning of >"Birken"? Hi Anne, It might depend upon what you are looking for. Birkenshaw is in the Parish of Birstall, so the Registers are probably held at Wakefield Archives. Also at Wakefield are deeds after about 1705; earlier deeds could be at the YAS in Leeds. Bradford Library might have some recorded Monumental Inscriptions and copies of the Registers on microfilm. Wakefield Archives operates an appointments system and is probably the best place to start. Probably the best place for Birkenshaw census records is Leeds Library, where you can pre-book a microfilm reader. Greetings Barraclough Listers, I was at the library this afternoon, and you will be pleased to know that the reorganisation is virtually completed ; almost everything is now on the 5th.Floor,and it's MARVELLOUS !!! On the 6th.Floor there was barely room to swing the proverbial cat ; now,on the 5th. you can swing a giraffe,if you are so inclined. Mind you,the lifts are still hors de combat, [There's nothing fair in love, life and genealogy !] So,if you were wondering---go man/girl go ! Cheers-------Derek.
Hi All Check out his site for the Telegraph & Argus www.thisisbradford.co.uk unfortunately the archives only go back a few years. Recently I saw a recommendation for a newspaper archive site, trouble is at the moment I cannot remember who, when or where. Will of course let you all know if and when the fog clears. Anne .
Greetings Barracloughs All, I was at the Library on Thursday afternoon and the 5th.& 6th.Floors were in a state of utter chaos ! Because Family History,Genealogy and Local History are now so popular, they have decided to put it all onto the 5th.Floor,because the conditions on the 6th.are too cramped. So I didn't stay very long,it was impossible to concentrate ! How long it will take to complete the move down to the 5th.Floor,I know not.The 5th.Floor looked almost empty of it's contents,so it might be done by next week, who knows. If you're thinking of going it might be best to phone first. Cheers-----------Derek 1

hi Anne, thanks for the info, hoping to get up to Bradford during oct half term. do I need to book to go to the library or can I just turn up?
Hi May I but into this thread please. Could you please tell me whether the Bradford Tel & Argus in indexed and is any index available on line ? Or would I have to got to Bradford ? I am trying to trace a death by drowning rumoured in the family but have no date, nor even the sure name. Possible Northing or Eite or Doughty - so far as I know. Perhaps drowned in the river Aire at or near Keighley. Date guessed at 1880 to 1920 ish. Just trying.
