    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] Introduction
    2. tina
    3. Hello everybody My name is Tina, and I'm one of the Barraclough lot that got left behind. I live in Bradford, West Yorkshire on the edge of North Bierley, around the corner from the famous Derek Barraclough I am sure you are all aware of! I am descended from Hannah Barraclough (b.1802) and James Crowther - When widowed Hannah went on to marry another Barraclough, causing me no end of headaches - good old Derek and Kim came to the rescue, for which I am truly grateful - I was at the point of throwing the lot into the air!! It's nice to hear from other Barraclough researchers and if anyone needs any help let me know (I'll get round to it eventually :)) All the best Tina Cornwell

    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] About me
    2. Meg Wilkinson
    3. Hi, List, My name is Gloria Wilkinson and I live in Oregon, USA. I have five children and nine grandchildren, and it is because of one of my granddaughters I got started on this. She got interested in Geneology and was upset with me because I knew very little about my ancestors, now I am having a lot of fun wih it. The problem is that everyone I could ask about places and names are now dead. The Barraclough I am researching is Joseph, who was born in Sept. of 1873 to Joseph Barraclough and Elizabeth Sherwood. I had thought he was born in Leeds, but now I think it may have been in Eccleshill. Joseph, my grandfather, married Gertrude Ellison in Leeds 14 April 1897. My father was born in 1900 and when he was two years old, they emmigrated to Canada and lived first in Nelson, British Columbia and then for many years in North Vancouver, B.C. I thought researching the Barraclough name would be a snap, because while growing up I never heard of another family with the name, so it was very much of a shock when I looked through the Yorkshire IGI and discovered so many. I think it is terrific that you have started this newsgroup. Kim has been so much help to me from the time I first started this. Thank you. Gloria Wilkinson Oregon, USA

    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] Introducing Linda
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, I would like to thank Kim for starting off the messages on the List, but do, in self-defence, have to introduce myself. :) Then, maybe, since there are still less than twenty of us, those who feel like doing so might like to tell us who they are, and where they come from. But only if you feel like it. Lurkers are quite welcome on this list. :) I am descended from James Barraclough and Hannah Carter, who married in Bradford in 1825. I cannot yet go back any further than that. Their son Luke came out to Victoria in 1853, and married Susannah Hignett in Ballarat (a booming gold town), after already having one child and telling porkies about their marriage details on all birth certificates. She was from a merchant family in Liverpool. They went from Ballarat to Kangaroo Flat (how more Australian can you get) near Bendigo, still in Victoria, where my grandfather, Major Henry Barraclough was born. After that they went by bullock dray through arid country to go up the Darling River, north of Wentworth, in New South Wales. That was really outback country. They ran a horse change for the coach there, and called the property Kapana, until Luke died in his fifties, and was buried in Pooncarie cemetery. They put the house on a huge raft of Murray Pine logs and FLOATED it about fifty miles or more (not counting bends) to Wentworth, where Susannah lived until a short time before she died. Major married Martha Walker, and my father, George, was born near Mildura in 1907. My father came to Gippsland, Victoria, and married my mother, Ailsa Johnston, from Newcastle, NSW. I spent my childhood in a rather remote area in hill country, until we moved to Briagolong, where I now live again. A typical small Australian country town, population somewhere in the four hundreds, with a pub on one corner of the crossroad and the general store on the opposite one. So, that's me. Next it will be the story of Henry, Black Sheep brother of Luke. And after that - get ready for Barraclough Trivia. :) Again, welcome to everyone who has subscribed, and thanks to Kim for getting us this far. This list is going to be fun. 1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] BARRACLOUGH WELCOME message from Boss Cocky Kim :-)
    2. Kim Pasquill
    3. Dear Friends and Family, I'm hoping that given time I will be able to call you all Family. Fist of all I would like to send a huge Thank You to our Linda Barraclough for jumping in and offering to start our own Barraclough Newsgroup/Mailing List. She has always been an enormous help to me since I first contacted her a number of years ago. And I have also had the great pleasure of meeting her and her partner Peter Lakeman. If any of you want to write your own Barraclough family history, then I suggest you talk to Linda, she has published her own, and I suggest if any of you see her book "Kapana A Place On The River" in the book stores or in your Genealogy or Major Libraries than you either purchase a copy or borrow the book and get idea's on how you can present your own Barraclough material in book form. I also know she has written an excellent book on how to organise a Reunion, of which I borrowed a copy from my local library and number of years ago. She is that talented that she even has her own Publishing company, of which is called Kapana Press. Ok Linda! (Affectionately now known as our Head Honcho) I know we are not supposed to advertise, but your the boss, and because I'm affectionately now know as the groups "Boss Cocky" then I reckon I can get away with it just this once once :-)) I am really pleased that we are all now a group and that you all can get to know each other, just as I have the pleasure of being friends with you all. And may we find the connections to become all family. At last count this afternoon there was 13 of us subscribed, so I think we should make a start and the others will probable join us in dribs and drabs. I ask that you all introduce yourselves and as Linda has asked, please tell us where you are from. The first lot of transcripts should start and appear from tomorrow onward, and I ask if any of you think that any entry belongs to your tree's, could please let me know. I constantly look at all of your trees and see if there are any match up's I may have missed, but I'm only human folks and do miss things from time to time. I also invite anyone who has any Barraclough transcripts, even if it is only one entry, please post them to the group, or send it to me and I will post it. So come on everyone, start posting and introducing your Barraclough's to the rest of our group -- Best Wishes Kim Pasquill Victoria-AUST Email: [email protected] Barraclough Surname Study: http://users.net2000.com.au/~football/index.html ICQ Number: 30110913 Researching: Worldwide - BARRACLOUGH and variant's WRY - TAYLOR,BATEMAN,POLLARD

    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] A startup message.
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, I thought I would just send out a start-up message to those who have already subscribed - there are about seven of us so far. So, while we are waiting for a few more, I have fallen for the temptation for a little bit of chit-chat. The question that is exercising my mind is: I will have a signature that I use on this list, as listowner (the person who runs around and fixes bounced messages, subscribes people who are on Hotmail, because they cannot, etc). In other words, I hopefully solve any technical problems. My signature will also include where I am (Briagolong, in country Victoria, Australia. Three hours drive east of Melbourne). It would be great if others could also include where they live in their signatures. But what should we call Kim, who is the source of all knowledge, and who has led, pushed, coaxed, driven and tempted us this far? There is a good old Australian term for someone like Kim - it is Boss Cocky. What do you think, Kim? :) Hopefully, when a few more have subscribed, messages will start to flow. I cannot wait to tell you about Henry, the Black Sheep of my Barracloughs. Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong, Victoria, Australia Listowner: BARRACLOUGH-L e-mail: [email protected]

    3. Hi Lyn, Welcome to the group. We can certainly help you, and you certainly won't be told to go to your nearest LDS centre :-) You will find Lyn, that compared to Australia, research cost's in England are very expensive for us Aussies, that is due to our rotten Dollar. We have to folk out 3 of our Dollars to 1 of their Pounds. Hence the reason it's so expensive for us :-( to research our ancestors. But I think you will find that the people of Bradford themselves will admit that the charges for the Archives is quiet expensive. But anyway, we don't charge here, and share what ever info we have on all Barraclough's. Your lucky in that I'm doing a study of the surname and collect all Barraclough information from all over the world. And have built up quiet a database of information, especially from the Wibsey area of Bradford. I'm not going to be able to give you much info on the present day Barraclough's of your husbands family, but maybe someone of the list who goes to Bradford Library, might be able to have a look at the Telegraph & Argus Newspaper around the times of the death's in the Monumental Inscriptions and see if there is any mention of other family members. If anyone can help and don't mind doing the lookup could they please let Lyn know. But I can help you with information on the ancestors of Walter Henry Barraclough. I'll work backward. I beleive the parents of Walter Henry Barraclough to be Edmund Barraclough & Alice Ann Brook, who married in the December Quarter of 1873 in the district of Bramley. Reference Number 9b Page 539. But that will need to be confirmed as I got it from the Free Births, Death's & Marriages index on the net. The GRO indexes really should be looked at to make sure they reference number is correct. You can apply for a copy of this marriage certificate from England, but their certificates are not as informative as our Aussie ones are. But you will need this certificate if we can't get the info from another source. Below are the census returns & trade directory entries for Edmund and his family. 1908 Kelly's Trade Directory for Bradford. Edmund Barraclough, 10 Taylor Road, Wibsey (See Brook, Thorp & Co.) Manufacturer. (I know someone with this directory and will ask them to look up the entry for the company of Brook, Thorp & Co.) 1891 Trade Directory for Bradford Edmund Barraclough, Park Lodge Farm, Buttershaw (Tordoff & Barraclough & Co.) (Rob is doing a study of the surname Todoff and is a member of this group as well, Rob do you have anything of this partnership of Tordoff & Barraclough ?) 1901 Census Nth Bierley (This census is on line, and can be downloaded from http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/ but there is a charge for downloading. It would be my guess that possibly all of Edmund & Alice Ann's children where baptised at this church, but I don't have a transcript of baptisms for this church as yet. If anyone can help with any baptism lookups for this church, could they please let Lyn & I know. Lyn, I can go back another few generations from Edmund, but will leave it here, so that you can digest it all. Sometimes, it get's a bit overwhelming when given to much info in one hit. Glad I can be of some help, and if anyone on the list who visit's the Bradford Library and or Archives, can be of a little help to Lyn, I'm sure she would be most grateful. Oh! by the way, if your wondering, I live in Melbourne. 3. Hi Jeff, Many Thanks, I thought the son's name was Humprey, but as I'm not very good at disiphering I thought I would get a second opinion. Interesting about Richard Rookes of Idle. Its my belief that there probably was a Rookes/Barraclough association this far back in time. And that is why we see some of our Barraclough's moving up to the Ide/Eccleshill area about this time frame. Probably to work on the estates of the Rookes family. But proving it is another matter :-) Yes the names Christopher/Humprey are unusual Barraclough names. When looking at the IGI and the entries from Halifax PC, the names Christopher does appear, infact a Christopher seems to be producing children around the early 1540's. As the burial register shows the buriels of a Chrisopher's children, namely Elizabeth, Christopher & Margareta being buried at Halifax PC, but what is not known is are these the children of the Chrisopher who's will I sent to the group, or are they his grandchildren ? Unfortunately for us who are trying to sort all these families out, the parish register does not go back far enough. But the name Christopher does appears again in the Bingley Parish Register again in 1599 with a Christopher producing children there. So may be some of this branch of the family moved to Bingley some time between 1540's - 1590's. As for the name Humprey there is a Humprey Barraclough producing children and having them baptised in the early 1600's in the parish of Turlton, Norfolk. Possibly descendent's of Humprey mentioned in Christopher's will or a descendent of John his other son. I do know that the name Humprey does not appear in the Halifax PC register and I have not seen it during this time period anywhere else. Rookes of Ydill will probably be Richard Rookes of Idle. The Rookes family were or became Lords of the Manor of Wibsey, owning Royds Hall and a lot of surrounding land including Revey. The name Woodhead is another that keeps cropping up. > I don't know where Christopher fits either, but both Christopher and Humphrey are unusual Barraclough names. The word 'contentacon' is probably 'consideration'. The Wills were usually either 'witnessed by' or 'in the presence of'. The men named after the children would probably therefore have been the witnesses. John Isabel and Agnes would have been the children of either Christopher or Umfraye. Probably Christopher. It seems more likely that the word 'my' was missed than the words 'of Umfraye my sonne'. If the will used was the proved copy from York, not the actual original, there would be a section at the end in Latin, which would give the name and relationship of the administrator, usually a wife or son. The copies from York are also considerably more difficult to read than parchment originals. > > > Jeff Sutcliffe > http://www.btinternet.com/~jeff.sutcliffe > Researching Ambler, Baker, Barraclough, Bates, Booth, Broadbent, Brook, Brown, Chadwick, Collins, Coning, Crowther, Fearnley, Hanson, Hardcastle, Hartas, Harwood, Holmes, Metcalf, Nowell, Oliver, Pennington, Pollard, Radcliffe, Roebuck, Routh, Smith, Sugden, Sutcliffe, Tordoff, Ventress, Walker, Whitaker, Whiteley, Wilkinson, Wilson > All of the Yorkshire Area. > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Kim Pasquill [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: 31 December 1996 20:26 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [BARRACLOUGH] Will of Christoper Barraclough of Hipperholme > > HI Everyone, > > And here is me thinking that Southowram, is a real long way from Wibsey ☺ well it does look it on my map ☺ but now knowing that Kath can see Barraclowclough Lane, from her house I can be assured it not that far away from the Wibsey area. > > This one is for you Jeff, you can put it onto your Will's transcript page. > > Will dated 25th June 1545 and proved 20th July > > Of Christofer Barocloughe of Hipperome (Halifax), gave his soull to God Almightie, trustinge of clene remission of my synnes throughe the merits of christs passion, and my bodie to be buried in the churche yerde at Halifax. 3. Hi Everyone, First of all a BIG thank you to Derek to typing the origins of the surname out for us. Everyone belonging to this group should print this out, because ultimately it is these Barraclough's we all stem from. Question ? Anyone know how I go about getting a transcript of all the Barraclough names contained in the Protestation of 1641 that is Housed in the Lords Archives. Does one have to hire a professional genealogist ? 3. Hi John, You are in luck, as our cousin Derek Barraclough did the original detective work and I followed on from him. William Barraclough married Sarah HOBSON 18th Dec 1796 at St. John the Baptist Church, Halifax. William died 3rd January 1829 aged 66 years and is buried at Coley Chapel. Sarah died 22nd June 1842 aged 66 years and is also buried at Coley Chapel. It is from their second daughter Hannah Barraclough whom you come from. William & Sarah had the following children. John born Hipperholme, bp about 1800 at Coley Chapel Harriet baptised 9/3/1800 at Coley Chapel and buried 24th June 1801, aged 1 year 5 months and buried at Coley Chapel Hannah born Hipperholme baptised 1/8/1802 at Coley Chapel died 6/7/1864 aged 62 years and is buried at Coley Chapel. William born Hipperholme, baptised 10/3/1805 at Coley Chapel Infant Thomas born Hipperholme baptised 12/2/1809 at Coley Chapel Martha born Hipperholme baptised 18/4/1813 at Coley Chapel Samuel? baptised 12/11/1816 at Coley Chapel Now Hannah goes to to marry, Joseph ASQUITH and together they produce a daughter Mary Ann ASQUITH born about 1829/30 in Shelf. I have all the census entries for this family and will send them to you off list, together with M.I's for this family at Coley Chapel. The 64 thousand dollar question here is, is Joseph ASQUITH the father of Charles ? he was born pre-marital. Sorry can't answer that one. If anyone thinks they have an association to this family please let us know. 3. Hi Everyone, I was waiting to upload this revised index into my homepage, but thought it might be quicker to send it to the list first. It is VERY long, but I do urge you all to have a look and see if any of your Barraclough's left any Deeds. I have noticed quiet a few names that are familiar to me, but have not had the time yet to contact those of you who's ancestors I recognise. This list is a revised list for all Barraclough and varient spelling Deeds from 1848-1863 and Brian tells me there is more to follow. If any of you do find a ancestor or 2 and would like Brian to transcribe the entry for you, then let me know and I will send you on to him. 3. Hi Linda, Many thanks for the posting, but a warning to others. Make sure if your ancestor is amongst them that the name of the Ship is Correct. My lot are there, and showing the ship "Zes Gesusters" INCORRECT, have no idea where they got that name from. They emigrated on the ship "The Six Sisters". Go figure :-) Cheers Kim ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Barraclough" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 15, 2003 6:22 AM Subject: [BARRACLOUGH] Lost a Barraclough? > Hi Everyone, > > Not sure if this has been posted before, but if you check the online index > to assisted immigration to Victoria, Australia, there are 48 Barraclough > entries on there - some may be Kim's, but none are mine. > > http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=4 > > I read that by December the Unassisted may be on there too. 3. Hi Linda, Congratulations on the safe arrival of Lee Paul, I certainly have first hand knowledge of being a grandma :-) In fact we took our 3 year old grandson to the Zoo for the first time in his life last week. He absolutely loved it, as did is Pa and Grandma. But I can tell you his Grandma was sure worn out when she arrived home :-) So store up your energy for the years to come :-) Cheer Kim ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dad Towelface" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 13, 2003 7:14 PM Subject: [BARRACLOUGH] New Twig > Hi all > Very small new twig arrived on the Barraclough tree Lee Paul great grandson of Ralph Barraclough (living) of the Kirkburton Shelley tree, grandma over the moon. .Linda (Emley) > > > ==== BARRACLOUGH Mailing List ==== > Kim's Barraclough Surname Home Page is at: > http://users.net2000.com.au/~football/index.html >

    1. [BARRACLOUGH] Heppy New Year
    2. Kim Pasquill
    3. Hi Everyone, Well I have recovered from all the Xmas festivities and now I have some extra energy :-) thought would send my New Years Greetings to you all. This past year has seen my database grow even further thanks to the help of quiet a number of you. I want to THANK everyone who has contributed to the list, for without you all we would not be able to share our Barraclough info, quiet as easily as we can. Special thanks goes to our Linda for keeping us all in line :-) and making this list possible, and her friend my not so little ELF (Peter) who helps out maintaining the list when Linda is away. I also want to send a Special THANKS to two gentleman on this list, who have been an enormous help to me with my Barraclough work for a number of years now. Jeff & Derek. Your help with sorting and transcriptions of Barraclough material has been enormous. I want to THANK YOU both so much for everything, for without your help, I would still be plodding along at a snails pace trying to work them all out :-) I want to say that, our quest to find out more about our illustrious Barraclough's continue into 2004. On my own lot, it has been a very rewarding 12 months. I moved on another generation down from my Stephen to find the names of all his nieces and nephews who where still living in Yorkshire after he emigrated Down Under. Also having the Deeds indexes transcribed by Brian Jones has also, been very helpful. As I now have a copy of the deed whereby we have been able to confirm that our William Barraclough (Father of Stephen) did indeed enter into a partnership and took out a loan with the bank to purchase land and building in Hunslet to start his business with his partner in Hope Mills, Hunslet, Leeds. I also think I have found the Deeds entries for the sale of his half share in that mill, and him buying into a partnership of another mill Otley Mills, Otley. But will have to wait until Brian can transcribe the entries for me to be sure. I hope you have all been able to make some progress in your Barraclough trees in 2003, and hope you all have great success again in 2004. To you all, and your families Best Wishes for 2004 & God Bless you all. >From Kim and her family Down Under

    3. Hi Derek & Jeff, Derek, we would love the 50 baptism entries, I only have 11 :-( but don't go overdoing it. I know your back is not right yet. So only small batches, and if it get's to much then leave it for another time. Jeff, you putting your database on line, would be wonderful. I had all the intensions of puting a lot of mine on line, but just never get the time to do it. But hope to put some more transcripts on when I have a week off work after Xmas. Re: what prompted me to advertise you and Rob's services, well I had been meaning to do it for ages, as you both have been an enomous help to me, with Barraclough material. And I'm sure like me, there are others on the list who from time to time need to get cert's etc. from England. I would rather get someone who I know is very reliable and has had a lot of experience in researching in the records I'm looking for. It's a way of saying many THANKS to you and Rob for all your hard work.
