Anyone researching Barracloughs that lived in western NY or PA? I am not connected to this family, but my kids' great aunt was a Barraclough. Her father was b. in Coal Glen, PA, and moved to N. Tonawanda, NY (near Buffalo). We can't seem to get back farther than her grandfather. Both father and grandfather were named John (most helpful, huh?!). Any clues gratefully accepted. Elwyn D. In light of a recent post by Susan Van Kirk, I thought I would post one of my mysteries... While researching the 1900 Richmond, Ray County, Missouri census for my Yorkshire grgrandparents, Arthur and Jane Ann (ARMITAGE) HARRISON, I found an entry which I suspected as being one of Arthur's siblings, Mary HARRISON whom I knew had married a VICKERS. The entry was as follows: E. J. VICKERS - 49-head-b. UK- m. 25yrs- emigrated 1880 Mary VICKERS - 47-wife-" "- " - " " - 2 children Arthur BONACLOUGH (BARRACLOUGH?)-23-stepson-b.UK - parents born in UK Rose BONACLOUGH (BARRACLOUGH?) -17-stepdau-b.KANSAS- parents born in UK If. E.J and Mary had been married 25 yrs. and had lived in the States for 20 yrs., then it's a puzzle why 17 yr old Rose was born in Kansas...perhaps the census taker interpreted *adopted* or *foster* kids as being step-children. Hi John, Just been looking at your family tree.Iwill admit I`m clutching at straws , but I noticed you have a Sarah,6- Sarah 1812 have you any more info on her?My Sarah was married to a Richard Boyes, I think yours is a bit too young but you never know whether the info is correct on the censuses. Thanking you, Mary MALLISON, QLD Australia. PS . They lived in Lowmoor & Wibsey, area. By the way I am an x Bradfordian.
To Susan Eddy, Hi fellow researchers, The Letters of Administrationfor Sarah Barraclough, she died on 1-3-1873.It couldn`t be my Sarah as she was allready dead, she died somewhere between1851 &1861 also she was now a Boyes. could it possibly be her mother?Perhaps when you send the copy to Kim she could have a look to see what she thinks if she doesent mind it will save you sending it twice. They did come from Lowmoor so Imight be lucky. Thanks for your help, All the best. Mary Mallison QLD Australia.

Hi Tina, Thanks formyour reply , it is a mystery to me why I can`t find my Sarah.I was thinking about it last night and I looked up some of my old research and I found the census for 1841 she was on living at Furnace Row Lowmoor , the 1851,as Richard Boyse(Boyes)her husband was a moulder I presume he worked at the iron works . Found them on the 1851 census and on the 1861 they were living at Long Row, . Boyes if you have looked at the Birstall Parish Register is very common name and I think R ichards parents were on it, but by the time Richard was baptised they were going to the Wesleyan Methodist or something of same but still in Lowmoor. My line is Joseph Boyesborn 19-5-1838 at Carr LNE. Richard and S arah were married at BFD PARISH Church as was Joseph and his wife A nn Duree .Ann was also bap in the Parish of Birstall. So it looks to me as though I will have to get the flm in for Birstall again and have a good look at it.I also was thinking I havent come across where any of the children were baptized. I gave up on Sarah awhile ago and put her in the too hard basket, but I will give it another go. She is there somewhere isn`t it frustrating. I f any body as any ideas let me know. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GIRLSYOU ARE DOING A MARVELLOUS JOB. Mary Mallison, QLD Australia.
Seen on Yorksgen, and sent to me by Julie. I forgot to mention in my post the other day that Arthur was born in England. He immigrated with his parents to the USA in 1882. Hi List, When people try to e-mail the List in HTML (I think that's all that fancy writing) Rootsweb doesn't accept it, and bounces it back to them, and a copy to me. This one came to me a little time ago, and I have just had a chance to get to it. So I hope, Gloria, that you don't mind me taking out what I think were only the fancy characters, and posting it back to the list. It is an interesting story. Thank you. :) Linda Barraclough Briagolong, Victoria, Australia Listowner: BARRACLOUGH-L e-mail: [email protected] ============================================================ Greetings from Dunedin New Zealand. I am Gloria Bernhardt and my grandfather David Holdsworth Barraclough; born 1889, (son of Abraham Barraclough Blacksmith) married Mary Annie Broome 15/3/1913 Parish Church of Ryhill near Wakefield. 3 daughters - May, Mary & Gertrude. They came to NZ 1926. I have a photo of the tombstone of Joshua (d. 22/4/1905) wife Jane & Abraham Barraclough taken in the Ryhill Cemetery. Happy to email it to anyone interested. I'm not sure if I am related. At the time I took the photo I spoke to an elderly man who said 'Bah! Barracloughs! Yon Barraclough used to stand and point and say I own everything as far as the eye can see!' He was not pro-Barraclough and would not elaborate. I am very new to genealogy and I thank Kim for all her help and good help.
Hi List, I have, since a young girl, collected the works of Canadian author, L.M. Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables. It was only very late in my collecting that I came across one of her rarest books, one of the only two adult stories that she wrote, called The Blue Castle. In this her heroine, Valency, is a spinster living with her widowed mother on the charity of her father's two sisters, in a rather snobbish family. Her mother is always put down, as marrying from, in their opinion "beneath" her husband, and was, in fact, a Barraclough. Whenever Valency does anything strange (in this case an apparently very unusual marriage) it is "the Barraclough coming out in her". Her grandfather, old Amos Barraclough, although he never makes an appearance, is used to show genuine kindness without pretension, and a bit of happy unpredictability. Now, I have just trawled through "The Wheel of Things", the biography of L.M. Montgomery, because when I have read it before I have come across one paragraph about a Barraclough family with which L.M.M. was friendly. But do you think I can find it? No! So I am off to put the book on my bedside table to read it line by line. Can anyone save me from that fate, and name which Canadian family it was? Cheers, Linda Barraclough Briagolong, Victoria, Australia Listowner: BARRACLOUGH-L e-mail: [email protected] and fan of L.M. Montgomery

Your message of March 19th indicates that you have a BARRACLOUGH in your family tree. In my tree there is a Barowclough (Betty) who married a James Ledgard in 1827. I wondered if there could be any connection knowing how names were often misread/misspelt back then. If you are new to this 'addiction' are you aware of the Lakeshore Genealogical Society here in Cobourg and would your neighbour Kim know of LGS. I tried to phone last night but I got an 'out of service' response. Now I see I copied the wrong number from the phone book. I shall try again but thought I would try the E-mail route first. Hi folks I am Brad Crockford from Ajax, Ontario, Canada. As most of you read earlier Because of the efforts of Susan Eddy and Kim Pasquill I have been in touch with a first cousin that I thought I would never hear from. Our Grandfather was a footballer for the Hunslet Hawks in Yorkshire. He was a member of the team that won the Yorkshire Sr. Competition in 1897. You can see his picture and medal by visiting the Hunslet Hawks web site and looking under club history, honours http://www.ndirect.co.uk/~i.wright/Hunslet/honours.html Kim found this page and a short time later had me in touch with my uncles son... Michael. Michael was a wartime baby and never knew his father. I grew up with his father always around. I am sure that we will have many stories to share. Another Barraclough success story. I hope to find more relatives in the future. BradC
Hi Everyone, Below is the much awaited Monumental Inscription's at Holy Trinity Church Wibsey. The LDS film number is 0098508 and the listing is M.I.'s of Low Moor Holy Trinity Church. I will not include the religions part of the inscriptions, otherwise I will be here for ever and a day. So will only list the names and details relevant to genealogy for each. The reference numbers are the Page and Entry numbers on the film, some were a little hard to read, so if anyone finds any mistakes, please let me know. Also I do have photograph's of some of the M.I.'s and will list which ones at the end of the listing. If anyone want's a copy just let me know. One of the gentleman on Yorksgen very kindly took these for me, they are mainly the stones which have been made into what looks like a pathway leading to the side entrance of the church. I also have 2 photo's of the church and Mary Mallison is very kindly sending me another 2. So I will be uploading the photo's to my Barraclough web page, in the next update. Hello Folks, I am Leslie Barraclough, born Brighouse, but family from Wibsey (of course) in Yorkshire England. I now live in Florida U.S.A. Firstly, I wish to thank Kim and Linda. Contents:- I too am stuck with John, Jonas, James, Sarah etc. as I see others are. My main line, and as far back as I can guarantee is:- Jonas Barraclough born 1814, died (killed actually) 1849. His wife:- Maria " " 1810 " 1859. Their children, John, 1833. Joseph, 1833. Moses, 1836. Sarah, 1838/9 Benjamin, 1841. Squire,1846 (my gt.gfr) Seth, 1849. I need confirmation and dates on some of the following. Jonas's father was John. Which John? " mother was Sarah. Which Sarah? Their known children (to me), Jonas 1814. Hannah 1815. Sampson 1817. Maria's father was James (also Barraclough) born 1788, died 1862. " mother was Sarah Myers, born ? died ? Their known children (to me), Maria born 1810. James born ? Maria's grandfather was Abraham Barraclough. Which? Can anyone tie in with these names and dates? Some I have seen so far this last week are near, but near is not enough as we have all found out to our chagrin. This will probably be a teaser, but quite authentic. Toby Barraclough buried 4th April 1671, his wife:- Jane " " 28th July 1668. This is recorded on a brass plaque set down on the floor of an aisle in Halifax Parish Church. Pwrhaps some of you have seen it. I took a "rubbing" and sent a copy to Derek Barraclough for interest. It also shows a coat of arms - ostentation?- showing, a, Three fleur de lys on a fess between 3 birds, and b, Three goats on a band. In Toby's will of 25th March 1671, "He left his moriety of the Manor House of Southowram and Cromwellbotham and all his real estate towards the maintenance and education of his daughters, Jane and Anna. The remainder to his brother Daniel Barraclough, Robert Hall, Josrph Helliwell", 1. Who was Toby. I.G.I. doesn't know him? 2 Who was Jane? 3.What happened to the daughters? 4.Who was Daniel's wife, his children etc. Did his line continue? 5.Which Manor House, is it still there? 6.Who were Robert Hall and Joseph Helliwell, were they relatives? Does anyone have any details of this? Happy searchings.
Hi Everyone: I have the 1851 Census Index for the above-noted. If any one would like a look-up, please let me know. Best Wishes, Susan Eddy, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

Hi Everyone: I have a copy of the Letters of Administration for Sarah Barraclough, dated 14 December 1880. Sarah, late of Fiddler Hill, Low Moor, in the parish of Bradford, in the County of York. Sarah died on the 1st of March 1873, intestate, and letters of administration were given to her son, Thomas Barraclough of Wilson Street, Low Moor. Sureties Marlin Fletcher, of Low Moor aforesaid, Draper. If Sarah belongs to you, I would be very happy to send you her Letters of Administration. I am sending a photocopy to Kim by snail mail for her records. Best wishes, Susan Eddy
Hi List, First, to Linda--thanks so much for this list. And of course thanks also to Kim, who got it all started with her site and generosity in answering Barraclough questions. I've just read through all the mail so far, and I'm very excited at the prospect of getting to know so many Barracloughs! I'm definitely a descendant of Edwin Barraclough, who was christened at St. Peter, Leeds, 15 June 1817, and married Sarah Ashall (widow; nee Watson; b. North Burton c. 1808) in Sheffield, 26 July 1845. I'm almost certain that Edwin was the son of Jeremiah Barraclough (also appears as Barrowclough) and Ann Russon, married in the parish of Birstall 16 April 1816. Jeremiah and Ann were both from Wike (near Bradford) at the time of their marriage. Does anyone have a connection to Jeremiah Barraclough? Jeremiah Barrowclough, clothier, was listed as "my" Edwin's father and as a witness on his 1845 marriage record; and Jeremiah Barraclough is listed in various Leeds directories as a clothier at various times from 1823 through 1845, but as an "overlooker" in 1839 and a beerseller from 1847-1851; all of these listings give an address of 17 North Hall buildings (one listing says "back of North Hall gardens"). Another Jeremiah (or possibly the same?) is sometimes listed on Bachelor St. I'd like to confirm that Edwin's father is indeed the Jeremiah Barraclough who married Ann Russon. Then I can begin searching the Birstall Parish records for Barracloughs from Wike with some confidence that I am looking for the right family. The christening date of their son Edwin is consistent with my Edwin's age on all the censuses. Jeremiah and Ann, by the way, had other children--Emma chr. 1819, Thomas chr. 1823, Samuel chr. 1826, George, chr. 1829, John, chr. 1831, Alfred, chr. 1834, and another George, chr. 1836--in case any of you are looking for those names. I have about a million other questions, but I'll be content with one more for now-- Does anyone know where North Hall, Leeds, is? In the directory "Streets" section it is listed as close to Kirkstall Road, but I think that road is very long. I would assume it is near North Street and North Parade. The microfilms for the 1841 census are listed as East Leeds, Kirkgate, North-east Leeds, and North-west Leeds, and I'd prefer not to order all of them. As soon as I can find some spare time and get to a scanner (I am a dreadful typist), I'll send transcriptions I have of Barracloughs from various directories and census indexes. In the meantime, I'm hoping that some of you will turn out to be connected.
