    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] M.I. Photo from the Kirk yard at Rippondon, Yorkshire
    2. Kim Pasquill
    3. Hi Everyone, Our friend John Berry sent me the below to pass onto the group. Thanks John, all contributions are very welcome on this list, now matter how big or small. "I have a photograph which I will get copied of a BARRACLOUGH grave stone in the Kirk yard at Rippondon, Yorkshire. It reads: In Memory of Hannah, daughter of John and Isabella Barraclough of Trainglo Who died Aug. 21st 1834, Aged 16 years Also of Retty, wife of James Exley, who departed this Life Aug. 1st 1848, Aged 65 years. This was a large stone approximately 30 inches wide by about 69 inches long and 1 and one half inches thick. It was being used as a walkway stone on the path around the church on the West side. Unfortunately John, this seem to be happening more and more, headstones being used as pathways. I don't know about everyone else, but I couldn't walk on someone's headstone if I tried even if I wasn't into Genealogy. If anyone can claim any of the above in there tree's, please let me know. 1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] Barraclough-Holmfirth
    2. Derek Wealleans
    3. To Kim P and the List, greetings. Thanks for the info of 27MAR99. My m-in-law, Edith Barraclough died 1997 aged 94 (her father, George, lived to 99, her brother, Tom, to 93) and they were the Bradford line, and there were many different families of Barracloughs there. My wife has their lineage in her head and on paper together with those who are not connected, and might mislead. There were at least 2 or 3 families of Barr~cloughs in and around Holmfirth, but the parish church (H. Trinity) was a chapel of ease in the early C19th, and official marriages could only be performed at Kirkburton, and Almondbury, depending I suppose, on which side of the river they lived. It was a long way to both churches from Holmfirth., to marry, and sometimes, I think that they didn't bother . Kirkburton's registers are readable, but have scant extra info, and might just be the parishes summary of the bishop's transcripts. The IGI was compiled from these, probably. Almondbury's are virtually illegible for the period, but one can make out Joseph's marriage 1823 to Mary Butterworth. (NB the IGI also found them illegible and put him down as JOH... which others thought was Joshua, but he was Joseph.) Almondbury also had the birth of his son Jonathan who went to Ballarat, who had his mother's name Butterworth (born 1month before wedding) and kept it. Joseph's granddaughter - Polly - had the family Bible, and her C20th granddaughter Dorothy was the one who kept the page of the Bible with family details, only, and who sent Jonathan's letters, steamship ticket, etc to Central Library, Camp Street, Ballarat when they mounted an exhibition, I think. Jonathan worked the goldfields, and later lived at 17 Windermere St., Ballarat. If Kim or anyone else goes to see, if the memorabilia is still filed there, we would like photocopies and would pay costs. "Australian" Jonathan Butterworth (if there are decendants in Oz, might like to note that they are really Barracloughs!) was married in Bradford in 1844, to a Nanny Metcalfe, and he emigrated some short time after that. His younger brother James Barraclough also married a Metcalf, was on the point of emigrating but cancelled it. Sometime after the family moved to Bradford, but while at Holmfirth they had houses, by the censuses, in Birch Hill and South Lane, which I have driven up, and it is very steep! Sorry, but I find Josephs, the Joshuas, the Butterworths and the Barrow-Barracloughs of 1800-1850 all of a jumble, but my wife has them clearly imprinted. Regards to all. I hope that all the Butterworths of Australia do not suddenly join the Barraclough List, but my wife would like to hear from Jonathan's descendants. There must be plenty because the couple had nearly a dozen children in tents on the goldfields!

    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] The Oldest Living Barraclough ?
    2. Kim Pasquill
    3. Hi Everyone, This below cutting was sent to me by our friend Steve Allatt (Hi Steve), who's brother sends him all Barraclough information he comes across. I agree with Steve in that this Arthur Barraclough must be the oldest living Barraclough. He must belong to one of us Wibsey researchers, can anyone claim him before I get time to lookup the source material ? :-)) Thanks Steve Kim Pasquill Steve wrote: My brother sent me the following cutting which appeared in the Bradford Telegraph and Argus. This has to be your eldest living Barraclough! "Yesterday I received my Veteran's Medal for service in the First World War. In those days I lived in Bradford and enlisted in the Duke of Wellington's Regiment 2/6th Battalion along with a chap I befriended called Harry Slater who also lived in Bradford - I believe it was Odsal or Bankfoot. The fellow who brought the medal was the President of the local British Legion and he kindly brought me details about Harry Slater,so if any relative of his would like to have them,I would be only too pleased to forward the leaflet on. It states that he died of wounds on March 27th 1918 and that he received the Military Medal. I myself was wounded three times during 1916-1918,but am still living to tell the tale at 101 on January 4th last. Arthur Barraclough,8,Beulah Avenue,Morecambe,Lancs,LA4 6UD."

    2. Derek Wealleans
    3. Have info and request info about Yorks Barracloughs of Holmfirth area, c.1800. Cannot find parents or siblings of Joseph Barrowclough, b Jan 1804, whose sons spelled the name Barraclough. He married Mary Butterworth March 1823, at Almondbury, one of the parish churches of the Holmfirth region but produced a son Jonathan Butterworth in Feb 1823, before they wed. Jonathan was recognised by his father, married Nanny Metcalf in Bradford 1844, and emigrated to AUSTRALIA's gold fields, living in MOUNTAIN CREEK (now MOONAMBEL?) They had many children (born at first in tents!) and they were buried in the New Cemetary, Weslyan Section (the family were strong Methodists in England and Australia) at BALLARAT. Censuses show Joseph, Nanny and children in Birch Hill and South Lane, HOLMFIRTH, with children James, Hannah, William, David, Mary, and Joshua. Joseph's great great granddaughter Polly of LEEDS had family Bible, letters, steamship tickets etc of Jonathan, but sent them to Australia, where BALLARAT museum has them. Nearly all the sons were carpenters or joiners for many generations. Descendants of these Barracloughs live in Yorkshire where it is a very common name, in Canada and the USA. My wife's mother was a Barraclough, and I am enquiring for her. Soon she will be checking probate, bishops' transcripts etc to pass beyond 1800. We have visited the Yorkshire areas. The BBC Television programme "Last of the Summer Wine" is set in Holmfirth and there are general shots of the town and the moors outside where the Barracloughs lived. Can anyone help, or would like info/details?

    3. Hi Mary, A friend of mine has transcribe some Barraclough entries from the Bishops Transcript for Birstall Parish Church between 1684 and 1750. But not all the entries. Are the films for the Birstall Parish Church Register copy or the Bishops Transcripts copy. 2 set's were kept, the church had a copy and another copy was supposed to the sent to the Bishop at Bradford. There are quiet a few Parish Registers that have gaps, and we then order the Bishops Transcript and fill in the missing years. Rob, have you transcribed Birstall ? Can you shed any light on this missing year or have any ideas ? If not I will ask Don, as I know he was doing some transcriptional work on the Birstall Parish Register I did note from the Locality Fiche on Tuesday that the film number for the Birstall Parish Register Bishops Transcript which include the years 1814-1817,1818,1820,1822 are on film number 0990527, you will notice that they years 1819 and 1821 are missing. They don't ever make it easy for us do they :-(( We, will get an answer for you and everyone else, Mary Best Wishes Kim Pasquill Victoria-AUST Email: [email protected] ICQ Number: 30110913 Mary L. 2. R.B. Eddy
    3. Good Morning Everyone: I have several old letters from a Margaret Mary Barraclough who was born in Ecclesfield in 1853. In a letter written in 1925 she reminisces about visiting family living on the Isle of Man. Does anyone have any Barraclough information referring to the Isle of Man? It has been suggested that these were daughters of Thomas Barraclough (1814-1872, Ecclesfield) by the names of Sarah (what else!) and Florence. Any help would be appreciated. 3. Hi Everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that I now have the 1881 Census Surname Index for Yorkshire I have the spelling BARRACLOUGH and now the variant's BARROWCLIFF, BARROWCLIFFE, BARROWCLOUGH. Just a word or warning, when you are searching for your family in the 1881 Census Surname Index check all spellings. Susan Eddy just found out why the parents of her Barraclough's were not listed under the spelling BARRACLOUGH, it's because they were listed under the spelling BARROWCLOUGH. So just make sure you check all spellings if you think there should be others listed, that do not appear. If anyone needs a lookup at any time, just let me know. 1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] Re: Found Something! BARRACLOUGH
    2. Kim Pasquill
    3. Hi Jacalyn, Glad to hear you are so excited :-)) it really is a great feeling when we find new info on our Barraclough ancestors. I'm going to my LDS next Tuesday and will look at the 1881 Census Surname Index and try and find a Barraclough family living in Devonshire, I should imagine that there is not to many Barraclough families living in the county. Of course your Joseph Barraclough will not be listed as he ws born after 1881 census was taken, but hopefully we might get some information on some other members of his family. Or if you do your research at your local Church of Latter Day Saints Family History Centre, you might like to have a look yourself. If you do, do your research there and have not looked at the 1881 Census Surname Index before just ask the volunteers you want to look at the 1881 Census Surname Index for Devonshire for the surname Barraclough, they will give you the right fiche to look at, then record anyone with the surname Barraclough or a variant spelling of it. My LDS FHC has a photocopy facility and will photocopy any frame from the fiche's so instead of transcribing the entries you could ask if they have the same facility and get it photocopied. The volunteers are excellent, just tell them you are new to genealogy and they will give you all the help you need. We can then work from there, I will also have a look at all my source material here and see if I can find anything else regarding your Barraclough family. I don't have a lot of information on Barraclough families living in the USA and do admit that I don't know a lot about researching there. But there are other members of our list living in America who might be able to give you a few pointers. It would also help me, to learn more about researching there. 3. Greetings from another Barraclough descendant. I'm trying to find out about my GGG Grandmother. Her name was Margaret Barraclough and she was married to Joseph Kellett on 10 Jun 1810 in Bradford parish. Her known children include: Timothy bapt. 14 Apr.1811 Joseph bapt. 18 Apr. 1813 William bapt. 26 Mar 1816 Jonas bapt. 20 Apr.1817 Thomas (c 1818 found on 1841 census, haven't found bapt. record ) John (c.1823 found on 1841 census, haven't found bapt. record) James* bapt.8 Aug 1824 Benjamin (c.1826 found on 1841 census, haven't found bapt. record) Jonathan (c1829 found on 1841 census, haven't found bapt. record) >From 1841 and 1851 census I found them living at 198 Moor Top, Low Moor. I don't know how I missed them but I don't have them in the 1861 census although Joseph died in 1866 and Margaret died in 1862, both still in Low Moor. Conflicting information doesn't give me much to go on for a date of birth. Probably between 1784 and 1789. The only possible baptism I have found is for a Peggy (she's listed as Peggy on 1851 census, but nowhere else) bapt. in June of 1786 to a Timothy (name of first son) but he's of Bowling. Does anyone have a Margaret as a sibling in their family? I don't have anything else on Joseph either. I only recently got back to this generation so I know I should be pleased, but as we all know every answer just gives us more questions. That's the fun of it! Thanks for any help. Debi

    3. Hi Everyone, Just a quick note, while our illustrious leader Linda, is away on a week's holiday (Some people have all the luck folks :-)) I will don my boss cocky hat. Now I really have no idea how to fix any of the problems I may encounter on the list, but be good folks, Linda is still listening in on her travels :-)) I'm sure if I have any problems in subbing or unsubbings someone, I know she will come to my rescue. So this is just a gentle reminder to turn your HTML off when sending an email to the list, just plain good old fashioned text will do :-)) and please don't send any attachment files to the list, they will only be bounced back to you. There are quiet a number of you who are waiting for replies from me, I really was not expecting such a wonderful response to forming the group, so please be patient I will reply to you all over the next couple of days.
