Herewith is my descent... James Barraclough bap 7.12.1805 All Saints, Wakefield, Yorkshire. Moved and settled in Barton-- on-Humber, Lincolnshire where he was employed as a sailor on River Humber, publican and coal . dealer. He married Mary Ann Hollingsworth a Lincolnshire woman and had a family of 12 or 13 . children. He died 8.2.1879 at Barton and was buried there. Thomas Henry Barraclough born 14.7.1854 at Barton. Was a master mariner of sloops and keels on River Humber. Married Mary Elizabeth Gadie a Barton woman and had family of 12 children. He died 31.12.1910 at Barton and was buried there. John William Barraclough born 18.3.1876 at Barton. Was a master mariner of sloops and keels on River Humber. Married Emily Flower a Barton woman and had family of four children. He died on 27.10.1944 at Barton and was buried there. Gwladys Muriel Barraclough born 10.9.1905 at Barton. Was briefly confectionary shop proprietor before marrying Edward Victor Keal (from nearby village of South Ferriby) and had family of seven children. Died 7.12.1992 at Barton (cremated). Edward David Keal (Me!) born 22.4.1939 at Barton. Now living in Harrow, Middlesex. NB - I am still trying to locate the parents of James Barraclough above. >From census records for Barton-on-Humber it is fairly certain his father Joshua Barraclough (who was staying with James in Barton in 1841) was born outside the county of Lincolnshire - probably Yorkshire. He was almost certainly married to Elisabeth Horner on 25.6.1798 at Harwood, Yorks (James' first son was named James Horner Barraclough). Can anyone shed light on Joshua - he was born circa 1766? Ted Keal.
Hi Everyone, This one is to go with the other wonderful transcripts that Susan Eddy has been transcribing for us. Thanks Susan. As Susan has stated in her previous email, all these entries were under the spelling BARRACLOUGH although there were 2 entries not list below for Thomas and Sarah parents of the children from Volume 3457 Folio 49F who for some reason were listed with the surname spelt as BARROWCLOUGH. Which is a lesson to all of us to always, check all the variant spellings for the surname we are researching. The birth place of all entries is Ecclesfield except where indicated. Please add to my roll call: Joseph Barraclough's more complete date of death is September 15, 1898, and he died in Coal Glen, Pennsylvania. Thank you, Jacalyn
Greetings from California. I'm a newbie and appear to be quite stuck. Hope someone might be able to help. Here is my line: Joseph Barraclough b. 1848, d. 1898, (both dates unconfirmed), married Catherine Ann King (I was told, but it was not confirmed, that they both were born in Devonshire, England. I do not know when they came to the U.S., or where they were married.) John Barraclough, b. 08-24-1886 in Centerville, Pennsylvania, d. 04-11-1961 in Falls Creek, Pennsylvania (Soc. Sec. # 209-05-0024), married Maude Erma Burkett. John James Barraclough, b. 10-20-17 in Coal Glen, PA, d. 09-23-91 in North Tonawanda, NY, (Soc. Sec. #172-14-8244), married Grace Lucretia Curtis b. 12-13-21, d. 04-23-82 in North Tonawanda, NY, (Soc. Sec. # 081-14-9655). Jacalyn Rae Barraclough (that's me)! If anybody can give it, thanks for the help BIGTIME!! :) Jacki
To all Barraclough buffs, If you have links with any of the Barracloughs of North Bierley, Bradford, then you must have links with many of the other 1,200 or so surnames in North Bierley. If that's the case, then I'm your man. I have transcribed all the census returns for North Bierley between 1841 and 1881 and most of those for 1891 and I am working on a database of births, marriages and deaths at Holy Trinity, Low Moor from 1661 to 1838. I have also collected all manner of other stuff on the district. If you have any queries, just drop me a line. Bohdan.
Hi, Listmembers, Guess I will go along, though I haven't got back very far. Joseph Barraclough born, I would guess about 1840 and married Elizabeth Sherwood sometime in the 1860s. Joseph Barraclough, born 30 Sept 1873 and married Gertrude Ellison 19 April 1897. He was living in Leeds, but married at Great Broughton. They emmigrated to Canada in 1902. He died in North Vancouver, British Columbia 10 May 1954. Joseph Rowland Barraclough, born in Leeds 5 April 1900. He married Elizabeth Essenwine in Vancouver, British Columbia 31 March 1921. He died 8 May 1968. Gloria Barraclough (that's me) born in Kansas City, Missouri, USA 29 July 1927.However, when I was three we moved back to Canada and I was raised in Vancouver. Nailing down my grandfather's family is really difficult because there are just too many Josephs. Really do enjoy reading about all your Barracloughs, because growing up I didn't think there were any others and I was always teased about my name. Good hunting to all of you. Hi Everyone: I would like to start by saying that Linda's idea is a wonderful one. It is easy to ramble on and forget that new members may not know everyone and their lines. One question I would ask with respect to this matter, does the Barraclough web page have an archive where new members can look up past messages? Now on to my branch: Paul Barraclough, born/baptised 1650, Bradford, married Hannah Kitchin in 1675 Paul Barraclough (2), Bradford married Mary Ellis 1707 James Barraclough, born/baptised 1711, Bradford, married Mary Hanncock in 1738 Joseph Barraclough, born/baptised 1755, Sheffield, married Hannah Holmes in 1784 Thomas Barraclough, born/baptised 1785, Sheffield, married Ann Parkin in 1809, Ecclesfield Thomas Barraclough (2), born/baptised 1814, Ecclesfield married Sarah (Canlin) Hague in 1844 Albert Barraclough, born 1855, Ecclesfield married Elizabeth Pearce Schofield in 1881 Albert Edward Barraclough, born 1890, Ontario, Canada, married Edith Irene Fulford in 1920 Edith Elizabeth Barraclough, born 1922, Galt, Ontario, married Robert James in 1945 me, Susan Elizabeth James Eddy I believe that Paul Barraclough (1) born 1650 was the son of Henry Barraclough, Bradford, Clayton, Yorkshire and had two or three brothers -- John, born 1640, Bradford and Henry, born 1633, Bradford, Clayton. William, born 1651, Bradford may also be a brother. I have ordered all of the films throught the LDS to confirm all of the marriages and baptism/birth dates for the above which I have not already confirmed. I had posted the other day a list of Barraclough baptisms for the Parish of Ecclesfield, children of John and Annie (Alice). As it turns out, these are the nieces and nephews of my Thomas Barraclough, 1814. This leads me to a question and Kim will probably be able to answer this -- can I assume that the Barraclough's listed in the records for Ecclesfield are from this above-noted branch of Barracloughs? Is anyone aware of and/or researching another branch of Barraclough's who settled in Ecclesfield? With respect to the cemetery full of BARROWCLOUGHs in Wesleyville, Ontario, which I posted a couple of weeks ago, the long-awaited "history" arrived in the mail yesterday. To quote: "The name has been researched from 1379 to the present...John Barraclough 1819-1892 and his wife Ann, 1820-1903 with their daughter Ann, came to Hope Township from Yorkshire, England in 1844..." There is further detail on the Canadian family but the interesting thing is that the name was spelled Barraclough and yet all of the listing in the cemetery records, headstones, etc. spell the name Barrowclough. If any one can claim this John and his wife Ann, I have lots of information for you. Best wishes, Susan Eddy, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

Hi Everyone, Below are various census entries for Farnely (near Leeds) from the 1851 Census. I did not transcribe these entries as they were sent to me from a friend in Bradford who was sent them by another Barraclough researcher. Therefore because I have not viewed the film, I can not be sure if these are all the Barraclough families living in Farnely during the 1851 Census. I will send the 1861 and 1871 entries to the group over the next few days. The headings are: First/Surname, Position in Household, Status, Age, Occupation, Place of Birth. Greetings to the List. :) Since I am in the priviledged position of List Owner, I get to see who we have joining the list, as they join. There have been a few Newbies lately, and they are most welcome. When the list started, we introduced ourselves, but after that, once we had posted our families, we became quieter. Newbies join, and perhaps wonder who is already there, and are wary of posting, because they do not see others posting (apart from our Kim and her band of transcribers). That's not to say there haven't been some really interesting posts. There have, and we are all enjoying them. There are now in excess of thirty on the combined list and digest, so I think we should have a Roll Call. :) Hope the oldies will forgive the basic instructions, but they are for any Newbies who may not be totally familiar with News Groups. 1. Open a new e-mail 2. Put in the address of [email protected] 3. Type in a subject of ROLL CALL In the message, start with the furtherest back Barraclough that you can find, from whom descent is claimed. With one line per generation, with as little or as much detail as you can fit in that line, work down the direct line to yourself (or your partner). Sound easy? Mine looks like this: James Barraclough m.1825 Bradford to Hannah Carter Luke Barraclough, b. Wibsey m.1855 Ballarat Vic Australia to Susannah Hignett Major Henry Barraclough, b. Kangaroo Flat m. Martha Walker George Barraclough m. Ailsa Johnston Linda Barraclough (me!) You never know, there might be someone just sitting back there waiting to see a common ancestor come up. Adding a country to your signature makes it just that much more interesting, to realise just how far-flung this Barraclough mob is. :) Regards, Linda Barraclough Briagolong, Victoria, Australia List Owner: BARRACLOUGH-L email: [email protected]
Hi Everyone: I hope everyone has been well the past two weeks and discovering wonderful information! Its good to be back. Thanks to Kim for all the wonderful posting done lately - what a wonderful source of information! The following are Barraclough baptismal entries from a series of 10 fiches from the LDS, Number 6343809, for the Parish of Ecclesfield in the County of York, PR 54/9,. I am not including the eight children of Thomas and Sarah Barraclough or the two belonging to Thomas's brother Henry and his wife Elizabeth because I think I am the only one interested in this line but if anyone would like them, please let me know. The other Barraclough entries are: Elizabeth, daughter of John and Alice Barraclough, Southey, Engineer, by Tho. Wilkinson, 24 July 1864, #3437 Harry, son of John and Annie Barraclough, Southy House, Engineer, by Tho. Wilkinson, 23 May 1866, # 3669 Frank, son of John and Annie Barraclough, Southy, Surveyor, by Alfred Gatty, Vicar, 4 March 1868, #3895 Herbert, son of John and Annie Barraclough, Southey, Surveyor, by G. Haydon, 6 October 1869, #4297 These entries are exactly as recorded. I believe 'Alice' and 'Annie' are one and the same person. The spelling of their residence changed several times as well as John's occupation. Best wishes, Susan Eddy

Hi Folks, I would like to solve the mystery of what happened to my grandfather Rufus Barraclough. Rufus, b. 1875 in Wortly Yorkshire, was living in Mystic Connecticut and about 1913 was planning a visit to England when he abandoned his family and disappeared. He may have returned to England or he might possibly have joined his brother Willie in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Willie had a daughter Mildred b. 1912. Rufus had brothers Harold and Ben and sisters Leah and Annie still living in Yorkshire. Help anyone?
