    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] Barracloughs living in Bowling - 1881 census
    2. R.B. Eddy
    3. Hi Everyone: I know I am only adding to the confusion but I can't help but think there must be some connection between the 1881 census entry provided by Mary Mallison and the fact that on the 1881 census for Eccelsfield, Margaret Barraclough (born 1853, Wortley) is listed as "(Priestly)" and an 1851 Census entry for Coventry, Holy Trinity Coventry 400, Warkwickshire which lists: Priestly, John, head of the household, 50 yrs., brick maker, born Bradford, Yks.; Mary, wife, 52 yrs, born Gosford, Warwickshire John Barraclough, Grandson, 4 years, born Bradford, Yks. I also note that on Mary's 1881 entry there is a 5 year old granddaughter named Sarah Barraclough. I have a letter written in the 1980s by a second cousin that refers to a "poor little Sarah". The letter goes on to say that "great grandfather never mentioned her". The first reference to "Sarah" is in response to information that was provided to this second cousin by a researcher by the name of Pamela Palgrave and the letter is written to June Benn (nee Barraclough). To date, I have not been able to sort out this puzzel and it seems that Mary's entry just adds to the mystery. Any clues anyone? best wishes, Susan Eddy, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

I look forward to getting deeper into the Barraclough (Barrowclogh) history, especially as mine link was in Wibsey (b. 1812), his wife born G. Horton 1820. But before 1850 they had moved to Co. Durham and were still there in the 1881 census. Eric Shaw

    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] To all my friends of our Barraclough group
    2. Kim Pasquill
    3. Dear Friends, Old (Not as in age, but time :-)) I thought I would just let you know that I have been quiet over the last 4 weeks due to illness, I am not still 100% back to my old self yet, but hope to be soon, and I feel I am getting better each day. To the newbies in our group, is has been wonderful that some of you have jumped in :-)) and introduced yourselves and told us about your Barraclough ancestors. My name is Kim Pasquill and I live in the state of Victoria in Australia, for anyone with an Aussie map we are down south. A few years ago with the help of another Barraclough researcher who was also doing his own One Name Study, I decided that I would also have a go at doing a Study of the surname Barraclough and it's variants. Since then myself and other friends in our Barraclough group have been transcribing any Barraclough entries from various source material, e.g.. Parish Registers, Census Returns, Directories etc.. from Yorkshire and the rest of the world. I have been putting all this information into a Database and have around 5000 entries so far. The purpose was to help and try and make it a bit easier for other Barraclough researchers to find their ancestors. My own Barraclough's came from Wibsey in Bradford, West Yorkshire and lived in such places at Wibsey, Great and Little Horton, Burley in Leeds, Leeds it self and finally in Otley. Then my branch emigrated to Geelong, in Victoria, Australia. I also have a copy of all the Barraclough entries from the IGI (international genealogical index) I will be contacting all the newbies who have introduced themselves over the last 4 weeks and will check though all my source material and pass on any information I have pertaining to your Barraclough's. Welcome to our Barraclough group, and may we all be able to help each other find more of our Barraclough/Barrowclough ancestors. 1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] History of the Barraclough Name
    2. R.B. Eddy
    3. Hi Everyone: I have a photocopy of what I believe is a history of the Barraclough name done by Prof. Geoffrey Barraclough. It is 7 and 1/4 typed pages long and begins with "Origin Barraclough is the most usual spelling of a name which has several variant forms..." The next heading is "Early History" which includes 1315, 1316 and the following heading is "1379-1545". Unfortunately, the bottom line of several of my pages seems to have been cut off and I am wondering if anyone has a copy of this history, if you could provide me with the missing words. Page 4, under the heading "Halifax Parish" my last line reads: "However other wills show quite clearly that many men combined the activities of clothier and farmer, whilst generations of Barracloughs in Halifax itself....?" Page 5, my last line reads: "The outcome must have been in his favour for shortly afterwards he succeeded Peter Sunderland as one of the High Constables of Agbrigg Wapentake and...?" Page 6, which is headed "The Protestation of 1641", my last line reads: "If we follow the fortunes of just one of his sons it becomes clear that huge families were the rule rather...?" Page 7, under the heading "The Nineteenth Century", my last line reads: "In 1866 the number had risen to twelve, Similarly in Bradford the number rose from four to twelve and ironically there was a Zerubbabel Barraclough in both cities. Even as late as 1866 both Barraclough...?" My photocopy ends with the paragraph: "Now, of course, in the West Riding alone there are hundreds of Barraclough families and the total number throughout the English-speaking parts of the world must run into thousands. it is ironic to think that 600 years ago at the time of the Poll Tax one family only was recorded". Any help with respect to the missing lines of text or information on the history or Geoffrey Barraclough would be greatly appreciated. With best wishes, Susan Eddy, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

They were mostly involved in owning and sailing sloops on the River Humber. I call them the Barraclough dynasty!! Happy reading if you're interested in my humble background... Ted Keal.

    3. I am hoping someone (or several someones) can assist with matching my old photographs to people! I live in South Africa and am cataloguing all my family photographs, which include the Wilman family from Bradford. My great-great-grandfather, Herbert Wilman, son of Squire Wilman, was born in Bradford on 4 January 1834. I don't know if he had brothers. He had several sisters, but I don't know all their names, or which one married whom. I do know of Mary Jane Wilman, born about 1829, and Hannah Wilman, born about 1836. One photograph taken in Bradford shows a handsome woman, probably in her 30s, with a neat-bearded man a bit older, and is labelled "Barraclough, [Herbert Wilman's] sister & husband". Which Miss Wilman married which Mr Barraclough? Then I have another photograph taken in Cape Town, South Africa, in the 1800s or early 1900s, of a lovely young woman labelled "Marie Barraclough, Opera Singer". I have found a reference to a Sydney Barraclough - could the opera singer possibly be his daughter?: "British Musical Theatre, by Kurt Gänzl: An even more successful piece of a similar kind [to In Town at the Gaiety] ... at the Shaftesbury on 13 April 1893 Morocco Bound, billed as a musical farce, was produced... Violet Cameron had a couple of ballads, and Sydney Barraclough as her tenor lover sang of "A High Old Time" and more chastely "Come, My Own" and "Light of Love". At the Lyric, Floradora ran for 17 months in 1899... [achieving] highest box office figures. One of the show's first alterations ... baritone Melville Stewart ... was dropped in favour of Sydney Barraclough." Other photographs and letters are of two ladies, elderly in the 1940s and 1950s, of two sisters who lived in Passaic, New Jersey. Marie L Barraclough married a Mr Hird, and E Theresa Barraclough married a Mr Pickles. If anyone has any information which would help me trace the family connections, I'd be most grateful. And if any of the named people are any reader's ancestors, I'd be happy to pass on scanned images of the photographs. Thank you, Mara du Toit
