    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] New to List
    2. Mullaney, Lu
    3. Hello fellow Barraclough's, I'm Adrienne Louise Mullaney, born 1962 in Ontario, Canada, daughter of Peter Mullaney (b. 1938)and Florence Ann Mullaney(b. 1939). My mother is the daughter of Arthur Barraclough (died 1988), of Low Moor, Bradford. My father is also from Bradford. Arthur had one daughter from his first marriage, now Mary Emmett, and a son, Peter, and my mother from his second. I just spent 3 hours looking for an old letter my Granddad had written to my mother responding to her request for the "family tree". He jokes that he's given her the tree and all the leaves as well (the dirt and all). Summary of what my Granddad wrote: Arthur Barraclough, son of Dan Barraclough (5/8/1858-7/8/1928) and Lucy May Sugden (2/28/1863-2/1/1933). Dan Barraclough was the last child born to John Barraclough (Wibsey 1826 - Low Moor 1897) and Sarah (maiden name not known, died giving birth to Dan). Dan then married Sarah's sister Harriet (Buttershaw 1830 - 15 Moor Top Rd., Low Moor 1905) who was both Aunt and Stepmother to Dan and his siblings. I'm fairly certain that Arthur's siblings were Martha, Harry, Joseph and Sarah. Arthur was the youngest and all are now deceased. I hope this information is of interest to someone on the list and if anyone has any more information or questions I'd be most interested. TIA, Lu Mullaney Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

    3. Linda, I understand, believe it or not, that where a birth/marriage/death took place had more to do with how much the fees were - the expensive events took place at the cathedral (then the parish church). The vicar of Bradford had to give his permission for any birth/marriage/burial to take place in one of the chapelries, and he kept the weddings to himself - hence most weddings take place at the parish church and baptisms/burials are performed locally. The most famous vicar for this practice of keeping the money at the centre was Henry Heap. [All this from memory out of a book on the Bronte family.] It's amazing now to think what power the vicar of Bradford had. Best wishes Rob -----Original Message----- From: L. 3. Hi Ted, Apparently the woollen industry, when it experienced a slump, was propped up somewhat by the government of the time. Everyone who died was to be wrapped & buried in a woollen to promote the use of this material. 1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] Barraclough / Hanson
    2. Timothy Hanson
    3. Hello Barraclough Researchers My GG Grandfather is a Edwin Barraclough Hanson, born Nov. 20, 1856, Little Horton Lane, Horton, W.Yorkshire. His mother was Celina (sometimes found as Selina) Barraclough who was married to a Joseph Hanson. The Barraclough/Hanson trail of my family history is one of the most interesting. The Barraclough name in this almost unknown in this area. However, as a mid 19th C. census shows, both names were very common in the Bradford area. The 1850's Census shows that in the streets adjacent to Little Horton Lane, there were 14 Barraclough households and 9 of Hanson's. Almost all of the occupations listed are related to the woolen mills such as: Worsted Weaver, Warp Dresser, Worsted Handloom Weaver, and Mechanic Wool Comber. Mirfield just south of Bradford, is the location of the Bankfield Mills, were the Chairman is listed as a Richard Barraclough. It is an interesting connection to the professions of the past. The only information for the Barraclough side of my family is the Marriage of Joseph Hanson and Selina Barraclough, Bradford Yorkshire, December 1854 (no church mentioned). Although an search of the LDS sight turned up a Selina Barraclough born 1933 in Horton - something I will have to follow up. Tim Hanson
