    3. Hi Everyone, Some friends of mine from Yorksgen have been sending me random entries when they came across them whilst doing their own entries. I will be sending these though to the list in the next couple of days. Another thing is that they do not always stipulate the spelling, therefore it is possible that some of the entries are of the variant spellings, but I will be listing them as Barraclough for now. 3. Hi Linda, Now you have another excuse to call in for a cuppa on your way to Melbourne, I have a photo of Holy Trinity Church Wibsey that shows the church and burial grounds. I don't know why I have not thought to show it to you before :-) I think the Virtual Site is a great one, and that should keep my little elf busy for a while :-) as I have quiet a few photo's of the headstones from Holy Trinity Church Wibsey, but some of them were taken in two frames as they are lying down and looks like they are used as a pathway to the side entrace of the church :-( Talk Soon Kim Linda Barraclough wrote: > I would almost kill to see what the Wibsey Church cemetery at Low > Moor looks like. > > Cheers > > Linda Barraclough > Briagolong, Victoria, Australia > Listowner: BARRACLOUGH-L > e-mail: [email protected] > http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/barraclough/ > A descendant of James Barraclough m Hannah Carter 1825 at Bradford. > > ==== BARRACLOUGH Mailing List ==== > -

If any one is interested in obtaining copies of these photographs, >please have them contact me at [email protected] <SNIP> There must be some lovely photos out there. I am negotiating fast with "Kim's not-so-little Elf" to see if we can get some photos up on the Barraclough home page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/barraclough/ We could have a Virtual Barraclough Cemetery, and this would work as, although we cannot send scans to the list, they can come to the Elf's address privately, and he might put them on the home page for us. (Elf, commonly known as Peter, may regret that little tagline *grin*) So hang in there (and do not send scans to me as yet), and we will see what we can do. I would almost kill to see what the Wibsey Church cemetery at Low Moor looks like. 3. It is obviously confusing that we have two L.Barracloughs in our group. Sorry Linda. At least, there is only one in the USA, me! Dr.Leslie Barraclough, a male. (Leslie in the USA is usually a female name, in UK it would be Lesley) I was born in the Bradford area, though now, in Florida I tend to see more sun. In November my 'E' mail address will change. I'll let you know details later. No Linda, it will not be another LB. 1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] Seeing one's name
    2. Hi Linda; Seeing one's name come up on screen that you did not put there is not quite as shocking as seeing one's name on a grave stone in the area where you know that your ancestors lived! This has happened to me twice now; once in Rippondon, Yorkshire and once at Holy Trinity in Stratford-upon Avon! Whilst in England this summer, I made the classical mistake of going to the church in Wibsey, St. Pauls, not the Wibsey Church which is in Low Moor. Nevertheless, found several Barracloughs buried there and photographed the stones. If any one is interested in obtaining copies of these photographs, please have them contact me at [email protected] Edith Alice, beloved daughter of Shoesmith and Hannah Barraclough who died November 3rd 1883 age 6 years, and of Hannah wife of the above who died March 7th 1923 age 60 years and of the above Shoesmith Barraclough who died April 1st 1931 age 74 years. John Barraclough died April ? 1893. Shepherd Barraclough died Jan 2nd 1966 aged 64 years and of Doris his dearly loved wife who died Aug. 31st 1987 aged 8? Frank Barraclough died Jan 16th 1941 aged 72 years and also of Ruth his wife who died May 13th 1950 aged 82 years and of Jo?Anne their dearly loved daughter... rest is buried and unreadable. 1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] GenConnect Boards
    2. Peter Lakeman
    3. Six months ago, Rootsweb created a lot of GC (GenConnect) boards, including the BARRACLOUGH GenConnect boards, which Kim has adopted because she ran the mailing list. Due to being busy, not understanding how the GC boards worked, and lacking a FAQ, etc, etc, etc, nothing was done to publicise them until now. The GC boards don't replace mailing lists, they complement them, and all subscribers should be familiar with both. Below is a short FAQ on GC boards. Rootsweb semi-official draft FAQ can be found on the BARRACLOUGH mailing list support site at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/barraclough/ Good luck with them Peter Lakeman One of Kim's not-so-little elves. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GenConnect Boards are an automated query management and document archiving system. At present there are boards for posting Queries, Bible Records, Biographies, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions, and Wills. The boards are designed to allow researchers to post questions and to freely share information with others. There are facilities to search a particular board or all boards. Users can customise the display of the board, and to access older messages that have been archived. The Query board is intended for users to post queries, while the other boards are for storage of public and private information. * What are the advantages of the GenConnect Boards versus a mailing list? Although Rootsweb mailing lists are archived, the information on them tends to be immediate and interactive. A topic is raised, discussed and eventually finished with, even if not fully resolved. The information on the Boards is for all intents permanent, being totally visible for one year and after that being available through search facilities. * Accessing the boards. The easiest way to find the BARRACLOUGH GenConnect Board is to go to: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/a/s/BARRACLOUGH/ where you will find the links near the bottom of the page. Don't forget to bookmark it. An index to other surname boards can be found at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/indx/FamAssoc.html or http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/index.html * Searching the boards. On each board is a Searchbar. The Searchbar is the blue bar just below the words Message Index. There are several selections you can make when using the bar so that you can see the messages on the board in any way you would like to see them. Changing the board display for yourself (or "customizing" your display) does not affect how others see the board display. In the Searchbar you specify the keywords that you want to search for (e.g. John and London), the items to match (e.g. All or Any keywords), the time period when the message was posted, and how to display the results. If you put a check mark in the box to accept a "cookie", your settings will be saved for you for when you return to this board in the future. This only affects how you see the board, not how others see it. Advanced Search and Global Search are also available from the Searchbar. * Posting a query to the boards. Here are a few good sites with information about posting an effective query: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/HINTS/posting.html http://www.firstct.com/fv/query.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~mskeelyk/keelyhow.htm#query Once you have posted a query, you cannot modify it. Either contact the board administrator (Kim) whose address can be found on a link near the bottom of the page, or post a response to your own message and use the subject line of "correction to prior message" or similar. * How will I be notified if someone replies to my query? If you have included your email (or other) address in your post, the respondent may decide to contact you directly. If when you posted, you didn't uncheck the box on the board asking if you want to be notified when someone replies to your message, you will receive an email with the "from" address showing [email protected]. You will only receive notice of any direct replies to your queries, not if anybody replies to a reply to your post. So it is still important to check the board from time to time for replies of interest to you. Alternatively, you may subscribe to the Boards mail-list, which is a separate mail-list to the one you are reading now. Whenever someone posts to that query board, all subscribers will be sent an email with "[email protected]" in the "from" line of the message. It is necessary to subscribe to each of the boards (i.e. Queries, Bible, Biographies, etc) separately to cover all possibilities. * How do I post information to a non-query board (Bible Records, Biographies, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions, or Wills)? The basics are the same as above for posting a query only the document boards are not used to post queries, they are used to post information from public or private records. Either complete transcriptions of documents, or abstracted information, is permissible. Documentation of source material is strongly encouraged. In the case of family Bible Records it is most helpful to list who has possession of the Bible or how the information was accessed. In the case of copyrightable material such as many Biographies and some Obituaries please review the information found on this page before posting to the appropriate board: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/HINTS/copyright.html * Additional information. For additional information, see the GenConnect Hints and Tips page found at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/HINTS/index.html or the general help pages at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ For more serious users who want to know the system better, subscribe to the GenConnect Help mail-list, in either List or Digest mode, by sending an email with only the word subscribe to either [email protected] or [email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Never have heard of anyone pronouncing it "clow" [rhyming with cow] or "cloe" [as in snow] or even "cloche" (sounds like loch Ness?). Mine has always been "cluff"... direct from Low Moor, Bradford, Yorkshire, so it's really pronounced "cloof" where "oo" is not "oooo" but is shorter sounding. 3. Hi Everyone: We had a wonderful three weeks in China and I will confirm beyond a doubt that there is not one Barraclough ancestor from China!! With apologies to everyone, especially Kim, I hope to be in touch soon. Right now my Dad who is 85 is not well and I am spending my time at the hospital with him. In the meantime, I am downloading every Barraclough page and will get back into the swing of things soon. With best wishes, Susan Eddy, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

About pronouncing Barraclough, Linda wrote: > But there is annecdotal evidence from the 1880s of mine striding down the streets of Wilcannia, in outback New South Wales (Australia), correcting people, and insisting the pronunciation was of the "rhyme with slow" type. And we still use that pronunciation here. :) That is exciting to me as well, since my gg grandfather was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, so the pronunciation would possibly have come with him. And some of his descendants just decided to change it? The name is used over and over, as a first or middle name, among descendants here in Canada, and we all say it the same way. However, a third cousin who grew up in England, and has it for a last name, insists its "cluff". By the way, my ggg grandfather was Joshua Barraclough, b. about 1778 (presumably in Yorkshire), married to Elizabeth Horner 25 Jun 1798, in Harewood, Yorkshire. I hope someone connects with us somewhere! Jeannette Claridge Nelson, B.C.

    3. Hi I've been busy with a family gathering of descendants of my great grandmother, Mary Ann Barraclough. She married George Glover in Barton on Humber, Lincolnshire, England on 7 June 1860. Then in 1882, they sailed for Canada with 9 of their 10 children. Recently there were 170 of their descendants together in one place for a few hours and it was quite thrilling. Her parents were James Barraclough and Mary Ann Hollingsworth.Their marriage details are: Entry No. 270 St. Peter's Barton - James of Barton to Mary Ann HOLLINGSWORTH of Barton married 24 October, 1833. Wits: James SWATTED? + Ann FENICK? + Caroline ??? Listed below is the family of James and Mary Ann (nee HOLLINGSWORTH) BARRACLOUGH: 1076 James Henry Sailor 14 Sep 1834 StM 1140 Elizabeth Hollingsworth Sailor 18 Dec 1835 StM 1223 William Publican 20 Jun 1837 StM 1336 John Sailor 07 Jun 1839 StM 1395 Mary Ann Sailor 23 Jun 1841 StP 1457 Joseph Sailor 21 Feb 1842 StP 83 Hannah Mariner 08 May 1846 StM 164 Benjamin Waterman 21 Dec 1847 StM These are only some of their family. A cousin in Papua New Guinea has sent me over 200 names of the descendants of James Barraclough, plus his Will. It was a wonderful thing to meet through a Lincolnshire Look-up contact. We also met two of his descendants at the family get-together who came from siblings of our great grandmother. It was fun to tease the ones who want to pronounce it "barracluff" when our parents always used a pronunciation that rhymed with slow. If anyone is interested in further details of this line of Barracloughs, let me know. Jeannette Claridge Nelson, B.C., Canada
