    1. [BARRACLOUGH-L] Wibsey Chapel, Monumental Inscriptions

    3. The data below is taken off my database, in semicolon-delimited format. Each line of text starts with a name and is followed by columns separated by semicolons, even if there is no corresponding entry. The source of the data is the Blackburn's Inscriptions, on microfilm at Bradford Library. The actual inscriptions attempt to give the full text of the headstones. My notes were selective, attempting to locate Barraclough's born before 1800. On looking through my original notes I found that when transferring the data to the computer I missed out a lot of 'difficult' information such as the actual dates of death of the children and spouses in the knowledge that I had my original notes to fall back on. I also calculated the year of birth from the age at death. Confronted with the option of going ahead with the limited information I had available or doing nothing, I decided to publish what I had. If nothing else it should prove to be a useful index. Here it is. Bye for now Jeff Sutcliffe Also researching Bateman, Bates, Booth, Broadbent, Collins, Hanson, Harwood, Holmes, Oliver, Pollard, Smith, Sugden, Sutcliffe, Walker, and Wilkinson all of the Bradford area. 2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, Kim's Not-so-little Elf (also known as my Beloved) has just established a picture gallery on the Barraclough Home Page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/barraclough/ The first two pictures are from Kim, of the Wibsey/Low Moor Chapel. I was just so excited to see them, because I had no idea what it looked like. Thank you Kim. There is room for other photos, I thought, in time, I might post some ancestor photos, to see if anyone else picked up resemblances. And maybe some headstones. And a couple of the horrendous desert-like areas mine first lived in out here. Maybe, to make sure I haven't created a monster, and Elf spends all his time downloading hundreds of photos, possibly if those who have something they would like to share sent one photo, so we could see what interest is like. Photos need to go as attachments direct to [email protected] as attachments cannot be posted via Rootsweb lists. Spring has gone away here, so I am going to play on the computer today. Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong, Victoria, Australia List Owner: BARRACLOUGH-L

    1. RE: [BARRACLOUGH-L] Bradford District Register Office
    2. Rob Alexander
    3. Dear All, I seem to remember that the chief registrar at Bradford is a Mrs Dorothy Jenkins. I always inquire by fax first if they have a particular registry entry - the fax number is +44-1274-305139. They usually reply to me by (snail) mail, advising me if they have the certificate I need and asking for the cheque at that time. You may have read about the recent book by Michael Foster "The Marriage Records of England & Wales 1837-1899 (A Comedy of Errors)", which shows how many errors and inconsistencies have crept into the indexes (and probably registers) held centrally. The indexes used by local registrars (e.g. at Bradford) are not the same as those held centrally at the Family Records Centre (the GRO reference numbers are meaningless to local registrars) and may well be more accurate. If you send an inquiry to a local register office, with some obscure detail, they will typically locate the right certificate for you and make sure you don't receive the wrong one - as so often happens at FRC. A friend of mine was looking for the birth of a Mary Tordoff, daughter of John & Tabitha Tordoff. I'm pretty sure that didn't make it into the national index, but the Bradford Register Office were able to offer it first time. By the way, if one is keen one can go along and access the local registrar's index for a small daily fee. It's not the same as free access to the original certificates (sadly) but if one is pretty sure where a family comes from, then it can be a useful and possibly more accurate alternative to searching through the tomes at Myddleton Street. Best wishes Rob

    3. Hi Everybody, Thanks to help from Linda, the boss, I have managed to create a file taken from my database, which is small enough to add to the list. My first attempt failed miserably. The format below is known as comma delimited. There are ten column headings, as per the first line. Subsequent entries are separated by commas. If an entry is blank, then it has a comma either side, as can be seen from the lack of entries for 'Parent' and 'Birth Location' on the first line of data for 26 January 1812. Now I can do it, I will publish other files from my database from time to time. Perhaps the next one for me to do should be the corresponding file of Monumental Inscriptions. 3. Hi Everyone, I just thought I would send you the address in Bradford for the District Registers Office for anyone who want's to apply directly to them for any birth, death or marriage certificates. You don't need GRO index numbers when apply to the local registrar, but to apply for marriage certificates you do need to know what church they were married in. The cost of a certificate is 6 pounds 50 pence Stirling Pounds and Pence. It is cheaper to apply for the Bradford District Registers Office for the certificates than applying to Southport in London. The Superintendent Registrar The Register Office PO Box 62 22 Manor Row BRADFORD West Yorkshire BD1 4QR Give them as much information as possible, and make the cheque payable to "The Superintendent Registrar".If they can not locate the certificates then they send you back your cheque and you can use it to apply for any other certificates from any of the Local Register Offices anywhere in England and Wales. If anyone can add any more information regarding the Bradford District Register Offices, please do so via the list. -- Best Wishes Kim Pasquill Victoria-AUST Email: [email protected] Barraclough Surname Study: http://users.net2000.com.au/~football/index.html ICQ Number: 30110913 Researching: Worldwide - BARRACLOUGH and variant's WRY - TAYLOR,BATEMAN,POLLARD

    3. Hi Jeff, Welcome to the list. I'm a fairly new lister myself and I am thrilled at the participation and effort that is apparent. I read your message and was searching for a connection of some sort. Then I read your note at the end mentioning other family names you are researching. This is what I know of my line: John (Jackie) Barraclough (b. 1826 - d. 1897) married Sarah (d. 1858 giving birth to Dan) and had son Dan Barraclough (b. May 8, 1858 - d. July 8, 1928), Dan married Lucy Mary Sugden (b. Feb. 28, 1863 - d. Feb. 1, 1933). My granddad, Arthur Barraclough (b. Aug 9, 1906 - d. Sept. 27, 1989) was the youngest son of Dan and Lucy. If you have any information about the Sugden family I would be most greatful if I could review it and to see if my mother or uncle have any knowledge or recollection of anyone. Also, I have information regarding Lucy Mary's children and so on that I would be happy to share with you if interested. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, but was born in Canada. My parents emigrated from Bradford to Ontario in 1961, the year before I was born. I have been back to visit family many times and have been fortunate enough to have been twice in the last two years. I'm very familiar with Bradford and all the surrounding towns. Basically the only thing we do when we visit is go on jaunts in the country and take my Nana to towns she would spend the entire day getting to by bus. Morley happens to be her favorite garden market! Of course there has to be a decent pub lunch at our destination...never have a problem finding just what we want. :) My mother is Florence Ann Mullaney (Barraclough) and my father is Peter Mullaney. Thanks in advance for any information you may have. Even if we don't have anyone in common, it's certainly interesting to think that people can be so far apart and yet be able to piece together a history. Ironic how folks can live almost next door to each other and not find out they are related simply because no one shared that information. I'm finding that there is a lot of information in my family that was kept quiet, for one reason or another, and now we are finding out about relationships and what must have transpired between families from wills and deeds. All very interesting! Looking forward to hearing from you, Lu Mullaney -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Sutcliffe [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, October 23, 1999 9:09 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [BARRACLOUGH-L] Jeff Sutcliffe of Birstall Having had my arrival 'officially' announced by Kim I now look forward to participating in the group. I would like to thank Kim for making me welcome and giving me invaluable assistance. E.g. I was able to locate the headstone in the Churchyard for Mary Collins from a photo she sent by email. I have no idea how many of us there. Alan Taft [email protected] enquired as to whether there was any connection between us. Unfortunately, I know of no other connection which we might have. I was born in Morley, a somewhat larger town than Birstall, but only just down the road. I have lived in Birstall for the last 25 years. Apart from the Mary Collins (Barraclough) connection that Kim mentioned, which is on my mother's side, I also have a Barraclough connection on my father's side and also in North Bierley. That is Nancy B. born about 1789 who married John Wilkinson at Bradford on 25 February 1810. Nancy died between 1851 and 1861. I think her father was called John :( I must say in the short time I have subscribed I have been very impressed with the way the group seems to be cooperating. The transcript that Ted Barraclough sent of Burials at Wibsey is a good example. I shall be putting selected entries from it on my database as soon as I can get round to it. I have extracted Barraclough burials from the Bishop's Transcripts for Wibsey Chapel for the period 1774 to 1812. After 1812 the ages at death were recorded so I was able to be more selective, and skipped the entries for the younger children. I have it on a database, with a lot of other information but when I get chance and work out how to do it I will submit my transcript, unless someone beats me to it. Lack of opportunity will be the cause of any delay on my part. 3. As a new subscriber, I have been the recipient of some valuable information on my family from Kim and, for the past couple of weeks, I have become totally absorbed by the information I have been privy to through the "Digest". Seeing familiar place names such as Gomersal, Birkenshaw, Cleckheaton, Batley etc. has been quite something, but yesterday in an e-mail from Kim the name BIRSTALL, West Yorshire, leapt off the screen. As small towns go, Birstall is SMALL, and having spent the first 28 years of my life there and having a grandmother from the Barraclough family (a Mary Barraclough no less, but not the one who married a Collins, my Mary married a Matthew Taft), there just has to be some connection with new subscriber Jeff Sutcliffe. I know of no family connection with the Collins, but the name is very familar as the name of an old friend from Batley. I look forward to hearing more from Jeff. Alan Taft

    3. I would very much like to Thank Ted Barraclough for the wonderful transcript for Holy Trinity Church Wibsey/Lowmoor burials 1838-1855, well done Ted this is magnificent. Also to let everyone know that I am transcribing the baptisms 1838-1855 but have not completed the transcribing as yet. But I will send what I have transcribed soon. Also to let everyone know that I have extracted all the Barraclough entries from the "Holy Trinity Parish Church Wibsey Register Transcript 1661-1837 by Hartley Thwaite". I will try and see if I can directly transfer this information from the database to email form, otherwise I am going to have to type it all up individually and send it to the group. A huge job in that there are thousands of entries :-) If someone invents another couple of hours to the day, please let me know :-)) -- Best Wishes Kim Pasquill Victoria-AUST Email: [email protected] Barraclough Surname Study: http://users.net2000.com.au/~football/index.html ICQ Number: 30110913 Researching: Worldwide - BARRACLOUGH and variant's WRY - TAYLOR,BATEMAN,POLLARD

    2. Kim Pasquill
    3. Hi Everyone, Well remeber not so long ago we made a couple of matches which distant cousins for our subscribers, and I said at the time that I was so excited anyone would think I had found a new distant cousin. Well I do always say what goes around comes around. And I have the pleasure of letting everyone know that I have just found another new distant cousin in Birstall, West Yorkshire. He is one of our new subscribers and his name is Jeff Sutcliffe, welcome Jeff. Jeff's Mary Barraclough is the sister of our Stephen Barraclough, the one that is driving me crazy :-) not the one that emigrated to Oz :-) Mary married a John Collins, so we now have a new surname to add to our tree. If anyone else on the list has any Collins or Collings surnames attached to their family tree's, could you please let me know and Jeff and I will see if there is any relationship to our Collins/Collings family. Therefore you never know when a new cousin is going to join our group. I have reproduced (as far as I can) the quaint spellings of the addresses.
