Hi List, Just a short note to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. We have been a little bit quiet lately, and there have been a few new subscribers who are probably waiting for us to say something before they jump in. Just imagine the lovely Christmas Present you could give yourself if you were to post your Barraclough family again and discover a brand new branch!!!! So here's mine: James Barraclough and Hannah Carter, married in 1825 at Bradford. Their son Luke came to Australia in 1853, and the family finally ended up on the Darling River in outback New South Wales. I would also like to especially thank Kim, who is the one who really does all the work on this list - where we would be without her I don't know. Following her Christmas message I did have a frantic search to see if I could find a elf-cap for Kim's Little Elf, who really keeps the List Home page going, but I didn't have any luck. Think I might have to make him one. (Hello, Peter, Dear. Thank you for your help during the year). I imagine there is snow in the churchyard at Wibsey, where I MUST have someone buried, if only I knew who. Here it is an unusually cool day, as we go into a serius drought with almost no feed in the paddocks around my way for the stock. May the Peace and Joy of the Christmas Season be with You, and stay with You for the coming Year. Dear All, This also gives me an excuse to advertise my new e-mail address in Phuket. My old address in Singapore will be discontinued shortly. I wish you all every good thing for the holiday season and for the coming new Millennium. Best wishes, Rob
Hi Everyone, While I have a quiet moment :-)) I thought I would send though my Xmas message: To all my family and friends I would just like to wish them and their families A VERY MERRY XMAS and a GREAT NEW YEAR 2000. I must say I would like to send a very special thank you to our list owner Linda Barraclough and her partner my little elf Peter a VERY BIG HUG to say Thank You so much for bringing all us Barraclough researcher together. I am not sure how many there are of us at the moment ( I haven't had a chance to look) but do know that our numbers have been growing steadily every since we started. I would also like to THANK all those that have contributed to our list by doing transcriptional work for us. It has been an enormous help to me, and I and I know everyone else is very appreciative of your efforts. So take care everyone, be merry, drive carefully (get the chauffeurs to drive, I sure will be on Xmas day :-) and will probably speak to you all again in the New Year. I am having a break from Barraclough work over the Xmas period, but I will still be answering private email if anyone want's me. Hi Everyone, I bet you all thought I had gone bush :-) No I have been rather busy lately answering enquiries from new Barraclough researchers, they seem to be coming to me in a steady steam lately therefore a lot of my time has been taken up looking up their Barraclough's and forwarding the information on to them. After that I need to update the Barraclough database with their info. It is rather unusual if a day goes by whereby I am doing some work on the Barraclough database. So that's the reason I have been quiet lately. Below is some entries from the Calverley Parish Register, it is not all of them, just a few including my lot, that a friend looked up for me. Hi Everyone: It has been such a long time since I have been in touch but I do have some information I would like to share, hoping that it will be of use to someone. In a book entitled "Growing up with Barnardos"" by Alan Moore which was published in the 1990s, there is a reference to Dorothy Barraclough. Dorothy was born in Leeds in 1918. Her father, whose Christian name is not given, went to serve in WWI, and returned blind and crippled. There is no mention of her mother. Dorothy was raised by her Grandmother until the age of 9 in Scarborough, Yorkshire. Although the book does not state it, I would assume that when her Grandmother died Dorothy was sent to the Barnardo Home for Boys and Girls in Scarborough and her father was put in a poor house. In 1932 she went to Australia; the Ashield Hostel then to Singleton. In 1938 Dorothy married Aubrey Walsh. It is also mentioned in the book that Dorothy had a brother George who was taken somewhere and she never did know. If anyone is interested in a copy of the excerpt, I will happily scan it and send it on. This is a very small contribution for all the hard work done by everyone else who is working away tirelessly. I still am not able to get back to my genealogy the way I would like but hopefully in the New Year. Best wishes to everyone, Susan Eddy, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada
Below are extracts from my notes, from my database. I have taken these notes from the indexes and microfilms at the Borthwick Institute in York. I do not have copies of the actual wills. The format is semicolon delimited. Ie there are 8 columns and 7 semicolons per line. If a line has more than one semicolon next to another, (;;;) that mans thet ther in no entry for the corresponding column. I hope you can follow it. You should also bear in mind that reading wills on microfilm is not easy and I may have got relationships wrong or missed vital information. Accoding to my notes the will for John (1837) refers to his sister Mary marrying a James Tordoff, but according to my other notes his sister Mary died in 1770 aged 4. Either he had a another sister Mary born after 1870, or this Mary was not John's sister. There was certainly a reference to a Mary wife of James Tordoff. If you want to obtain a copy of any of the wills they cost £2.50 from The Borthwick Institute of Historical Research, Peasholme Green, St Anthony's Hall, York YO1 2PW, quoting the probate details. They take about 28 days to process. Dear Kim Many thanks for this new lead in finding the descendants of our "Lincolnshire Barraclough Dynasty". At present I have contact with cousins descending from John, Joseph and Henry Barraclough. It will be fascinating to learn which line Lynn is from. Your constant vigilance is much appreciated. Jeannette
Dear Ted Keal & Jeannette Claridge, I checked the Gen Forum site today and notice another descendent of James Barraclough and Mary Ann Hollingsworth is also researching your line. "Looking for information on Joshua Barraclough who was born about 1780 at Pontefract or Wakefield England. He married Elizabeth Horner(?) and had two sons, James (born about 1805 - died February 8, 1879) and Joshua (born about 1780). They used to bring their river craft down the Yorkshire Ouse and Humber, trading, to Barton-on-Humber. James married Mary Ann Hollingsworth (born September 28, 1815 - died September 18, 1879). They had 13 children. If anyone has any info on these people, or further back, I would love to hear from you. " The ladies name is Lynn Staff and can be contacted on [email protected] Could you both please contact Lynn and tell her of your connection, also if you would like to invite her to join our Barraclough group please do so, and ask her to contact me and tell me of her connection to your Barraclough Lincolnshire Dynasty. -- Best Wishes Kim Pasquill Victoria-AUST Email: [email protected] Barraclough Surname Study: http://users.net2000.com.au/~football/index.html ICQ Number: 30110913 Researching: Worldwide - BARRACLOUGH and variant's WRY - TAYLOR,BATEMAN,POLLARD
