Hello to all on the group - and a happy new year, century and millenium ! Together with several other group members around the world I am interested in what I have called the Barraclough Dynasty of Barton-on-Humber, Lincolnshire started in the early 1800's by James Barraclough who had been born on 7.12.1805 in Wakefield and plied the Ouse and Humber in sloops and keel boats - probably moving coal. James settled in Barton and married a local woman (as probably did his brother Joshua - but he may have been lost at sea or just deserted his wife (name n/k)). James had a large family and I (with many many others am a direct descendant. I was born in Barton and my mother was a Barraclough. Any information on the Barton connection is very welcome, but in particular I am very very keen to find out about Joshua who was James' father. I know he was married in Harewood to Elisabeth Horner on 25.6.1798 and that they had sons James (1805), Martha (1808), Joshua (1810), Josiah (1811), John (1816) and Mary 1813). I also know that Joshua's wife died in 1817 and that he was with his son James in Barton in 1841(aged 75). I can find no record of him in 1851 census and have not yet found any record of his death. I am there- fore trying to find any reference to a Joshua Barraclough born circa 1766, almost certainly from Yorkshire and who died between 1841 and 1851. I and a good few others would welcome any suggestions. Cheers - as we say in England..... Ted Keal.
In my research I am finding that more and more of my lines were apparently in Wibsey around the turn of the 19C and since there are no census reports to dive into I thought someone might know of other resources (or may know personally) that would indicate what the approximate population of the town was circa 1750 through 1820ish. I have obtained some information from locals and other researchers that Wibsey is on a hill and used to be somewhat difficult to reach which leads me to believe that the population was most likely not huge during that time period. Taking my assumption to the next level (which ALWAYS gets me into trouble), it seems possible that most of the people with the same surname were closely related . :-) Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. Happy New Years!!! I hope everyone had a nice holiday season. As usual, it was very busy for us. Now that things has calmed down, I can get back to my research. I have a web site that might be of interest to some of you. It is about Mary Ann Barraclough and George Glover from the Barton on Humber (England) area. If anyone has any more information about this couple or relations, I would love to hear from you. Please check out: http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Falls/3508/geneology/glover.html Also, this is my husbands line: http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Falls/3508/geneology/barraclough-horner.html If there are any questions, just ask. May you all have a very happy New Year and I would like to thank the wonderful people who have been searching Barraclough information and posting it. I will take Kim's advice and again post my research aim. I am still trying to find a record of the marriage of Joseph Barraclough and Elizabeth Sherwood, who are my grgrandparents probably lived in Eccleshill and if that is the case and I have found the right family on the 1881 census, then Elizabeth was born in Kirkby and as there was an Elizabeth Sherwood born in Kirkby Moorside about the right time I have sent inquiries for the marriage there. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know. Best regards to you all. Gloria Wilkinson
Dear Newbies and Oldies (Not as in age :-), I would just like to take the opportunity to welcome you all to the list, and like our list owner Linda would invite you all to post a message to us, telling us who you are, were you live and who your Barraclough or variant's ancestors were. I would also invite all those of us on the list, who have been with us awhile to re post their Barraclough and variant ancestors again, you never know we might end up with a few more cousins for kick of the New Year. This came in on another list and I thought it might interest the southern hemisphere Barracloughs. Jeannette Subject: ALL AUSTRALIAN members Hi there all, If you live in Australia, and are fed up with the exorbitant prices you are paying for internet connection there is a new company out. They are globalfreeway and I received a coupon which states the following: Surf the internet for FREE! Call 1300137 765 now for your free CD. NO CREDIT CARD NEEDED.... I rang the number and it is TRUE, I am now waiting impatiently for my CD. Apparently the mother company and I believe Ericcson got a little sick of the way 'surfers' were being charged by providors and decided to do something about it. The reason for no FEES is that the site will be paid for by the Advertising on it. Just thought you all would like to know, I have no connection with this company at all, so will not be receiving any monetary reward for letting people know. They may receive something to their advantage. Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong, Victoria, Australia (strangely wet and chilly) Listowner: BARRACLOUGH-L http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/barraclough/ A descendant of James Barraclough m Hannah Carter 1825 at Bradford.
Following Linda's advice because I'm still trying to link my Barraclough's. My John Barraclough (Barrowclough in 1881 census) born Wibsey 1811/12 married Ann Armitage, b 1820 Great Horton in Bradford date unknown. Son James born 1842 in G. Horton but daughters, were born in County Durham Betty{Betsy} (my g.grandmother) was born 1848 in Hunwick, and Ann born 1855 in Willington. I'm OK on Betty and her descendants, but would be grateful for any other links available. Weather is chilly and wet today in the Outer Hebrides, best wishes to everyone always but especially for 2000. Eric Shaw
Best wishes for the holiday season to all Barraclough descendants! For the new subscirbers that Linda mentioned, there are a couple of us whose ancestors moved from Yorkshire to Lincolnshire in the mid 1800s. If anyone traces their line to Joshua Barraclough (Some places spelled Barrowclough), born in Wibsey, 1765, married Elisabeth Horner in Harewood, 1798, then you can tap into some interesting data. Their son, James Barraclough, eventually moved from Wakefield to Barton, Lincolnshire and we have begun gathering lots of names and dates from there on in. Its the "before" part that is still obscure. My thanks to Linda and Kim and "The Elf" for putting me in touch with like- minded relatives. May the year 2000 be a peaceful and interesting one for us all. Jeannette Claridge
