My husband's grandmother Cynthia Ellen Barr married 1st, George DUNN in Indiana on 19 Aug 1880 in Putnam County. After his death (or disappearance nothing has been determined re the death) Cynthia married Thomas William Cummings 24 Dec 1893. There were 3 DUNN children and 4 Cummings sons. Her father's name (listed on her marriage license to Thomas) is listed as James E. Barr and mother Phoebe Wiley. If you have any connection with any of the above would love to hear from you. Sincerely, Marilyn HAWORTH Cummings

The letter was addressed to her as follows: Mrs. James Blackburn at Mount Johnston near Chambly, In Care of the Honourable John Johnston, Baronet, Mountreal, N. America. In this letter her tries to console his daughter (whose Christian name was never mentioned) over the recent demise of her husband, leaving her the sole provider for herself and their children (names and number of not given). He mentions that he heard that she was considering returning to Scotland, and he informed her of the economic conditions in Scotland at the time following the war with France. He also mentions her sister Jean BARR living in living and working in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, and her brother (unnamed) living and working in Paisley. He was apparently a widower, as he mentioned that “I had as much money of my own that I wanted for nothing that I stood in need of. I have been for this sometime bypasst in a good State of Health...” He mentions his daughter’s aunt, Mrs. Aitkins, who lived in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, with whom he stayed overnight, and a cousin Aitkins (unnamed). James BARR apparently remarried, as his daughter-in-law, Jannet Pettigrew, wife of Robert BARR, mentions emigrating with her husband, their four children, and her husband’s parents. If anyone identifies with these people, I would appreciate hearing from them. dick barr Syracuse, NY

I've been diligently searching all Barr's in Ohio in 1850 trying to find my GGGGrandfather - without success, so far. In the 1850 hardcopy index, I copied from the State Historical Society Library, it list a William Barr in Portage County - DE Township, in 1850 on page 393 but I've searched the Ancestry images and can't seem to find any township that would begin with DE. Is there anyone out there that has the US Census on CD's that could see if they can find a William Barr in Portage County, Ohio, in a township that is abreviated with DE? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Diane: I have been searching for my g. grandfather William Dunn Barr born 1-30-1840 in Holmes Co., Ohio for a long time. All I know about his parents is his father was John born in Maryland. No information on his mother. This was on his death certificate. My William would be a little older than yours. I have no idea if there were other children in the family. I just can't find him. He married and had 2 children born in Iowa. He lived the remainder of his life in SW Iowa. Sure wish we could make a connection here! Ruth in Iowa

(died young) 11) Robert George (died in Civil War, never married) I suspect that Samuel Barr's father was John Barr and his mother may have been a Campbell or had the first name Jane or Margaret. They may have come to Mifflin from Cumberland County or Lancaster County. They were Scots-Irish and Presbyterian. I believe that Samuel may have been the eldest child with at least 2 younger brothers and 2 younger sisters. Does anyone know of this family?
Hello, Can anyone out there help me out. I've searched the 1850 US Census, Miami County, OH on Ancestry.com (which is not indexed or separated into different townships) and after many hours found 15 different townships but can't locate a township where the two following individuals may be found: William Barr MMPQ 361 Samuel Barr MMPQ 382 I would like to know if there is an on-line site where I can find out what the US Census abbreviations for counties and townships represent. I would also appreciate it if someone would look these two up on an indexed CD and tell me who is with them. Anything anyone can do, if just pointing me in the right direction, I would be grateful. Thanks. Diane
Glen, Thanks for taking the time to look this up for me. The image source on Ancestry is painfully slow. I've spent hours and hours with few results and when you get an error message about an image you've sought, it can be discouraging. I'm trying to go through all the Barr's in the 1850 US Census for Ohio, looking for that 7 yr. old William, and I've got roving eyeball syndrome. Smile. Thanks. Hello, I've just joined your list and would like to introduce my Barr family line, or lack of it. I've been stuck for over twenty years trying to find my GGGrandfather, William Barr, born in June of 1843, and lived in Ohio. I know nothing of any siblings or parents. I do know that he apparently married in the 1870's had a daughter named Ola born abt. 1875 and then his first wife died. Next he married an Emma abt. 1878/9 in Columbus, OH and together they had about 9 children according to census records. The children of Wm. And Emma that I can find are as follows: Mary Ann b. 1879 William H. b. Jan. 1883 or 84 (He is my GGrandfather) Clark E. (Jake) b. May 1889 Ida B. b. Apr. 1892 Samuel E. b. abt. Oct. 1892-5 (Possibly lived in Union Co., OH), d. Aug. 1974 John Oberly b. Oct. 1891 and d. Feb. 1895 Jesse D. b. Apr. 1904 or 05 (Lived in Franklin Co., OH), married Elizabeth Shockley, d. Aug. 1967 Margaret ??? William H. above born abt. 1884, married Nancy Ankrom, and had 8 children: William Charles Harry Harrison (My Grandfather) b. Nov. 26, 1908 Homer Jackson Della Anna Mary (Roscelli - ?sp) Betty If anyone knows anything about this family, puleeeease let me know. Hope you are all having a very Merry Christmas. Thanks. Diane
