Does anyone know of another 1860 US Census index on-line besides Ancestry.com? I want to search the 1860 US Census for Henry's and Barr's living in Franklin County, Ohio but for over a month now when I query the AIS index on Ancestry it returns no Henry's or Barr's which I know is very wrong. I've seen the hardcopy listings at the libraries but don't have access to one right now. Any direction would be appreciated. Thanks. Diane

I do have both Barr books about that Barr family (the one by Charles R. Barr as well as the one by Reverend William B. Barr) but these are not directly related as far as I can tell. I think the branch I am looking for came from part of what was Cumberland County, then was part of Lancaster County, then became part of Mifflin County. My gut feeling is that the father's name was John and that he was born in Pa between 1755 and 1765 and that his wife's surname may have been Campbell, but just supposition at this point. This Samuel Barr, the son, is the Samuel Barr that "Samuel's Church" in Mifflin County was named after (he donated the land to the Church).

Is this a possibility? The other children were Mary 8 yrs. b. PA, David or Daniel (can't read the spelling) 6 yrs. born in PA, Hugh 4 yrs. b. OH, and Minerva 2 yrs. b. In 1850 in Wayne Twp., Wayne Co. there was a James and Susanne Barr, both 50 years old and from PA. The children still living with them were William 18, Margaret 16, James 14, Matilda 9, and John 7. The two oldest children (William and Margaret) were born in PA but the younger ones were born in Ohio. Is it possible these were Samuel's parents? Up the street is another Wm Barr, 22 yrs. old enumerated with a Frederick Ziedler (28 yr. old farmer) both born in Ohio. These are the only Barr's in Wayne Co. in 1850 that may have been old enough, and from PA, that were living in the county - at least that I can find. Hope this helps. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2002 11:31 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [BARR] Re: Barrs of Mifflin County, Pa This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. The letter was addressed to her as follows: Mrs. James Blackburn at Mount Johnston near Chambly, In Care of the Honourable John Johnston, Baronet, Mountreal, N. America. I found a marriage record of a Janet BARR and James BLACKBURN 3 June 1797, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire. In this letter her tries to console his daughter (whose Christian name was never mentioned) over the recent demise of her husband, leaving her the sole provider for herself and their children (names and number of not given). He mentions that he heard that she was considering returning to Scotland, and he informed her of the economic conditions in Scotland at the time following the war with France. He also mentions her sister Jean BARR living in living and working in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, and her brother (unnamed) living and working in Paisley. He was apparently a widower, as he mentioned that “I had as much money of my own that I wanted for nothing that I stood in need of. I have been for this sometime bypasst in a good State of Health...” He mentions his daughter’s aunt, Mrs. Aitkins, who lived in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, with whom he stayed overnight, and a cousin Aitkins (unnamed). James BARR apparently remarried, as his daughter-in-law, Jannet Pettigrew, wife of Robert BARR, mentions emigrating with her husband, their four children, and her husband’s parents. If anyone identifies with these people, I would appreciate hearing from them. dick barr Syracuse, NY
