Barr Surname listers : In researching my Carroll line of my family history, I find a number of Barr connections that I am hoping others may be able to help me develop.THe connection to the Carroll surname arises from the fact that a Mary Ann Barr Married Charles C. Carroll at St. Titus R.C. Church, Titusville, Crawford Co. Pa. on Nov. 19, 1865. This Mary Ann Barr was a daughter of Joseph Barr and his wife Sarah ( maiden name unknown at this time ) My research indicates that Joseph Barr was born in Ireland abt.1810. wife Sarah, was born in New York, abt.1822, and Mary Ann, was born about 1839. I suspect that this Barr family was possibly from Chenango,County, New York, but have no hard facts to that. Sometime about 1847, I have reason to believe that this Barr family ( perhaps with other Barr families ) left the New York area and relocated to Rome Twp., Crawford Co. Pa. I have found them on the 1860 and 1870 census of that place. Mary Ann had the following Siblings that I know of : William, born New York, 1840 Ellen born New York, 1843 Catherine, born PA. 1947 Joseph. born Pa. 1849 John, born Pa. 1851 Now to a little about George W. Barr : I have reason to believe that he was a Uncle of Mary Ann Barr who married Charles C. Carroll. George W. Barr, M.D. of Titusville, Pa. was born December 10, 1832 in Sherburne, Chenango Co., New York. and was the only child of Charles W. and Almira ( Blineberry ) Barr., the former a native of Massachusetts and the latter of Ho;lland Dutch Extraction. George W Barr received his medical degree at the Buffalo Medical College in in 1856.and commenced the practice of medicine at Gowanda, New York. He was assigned the duty of Examining Surgeon in Gen. R. B. Valkenburg's Staff at Elmira Mustering District on Sept. 15, 1861 and was commissioned Surgeon of the Sixty-Fourth New York Volunteers on Nov. 13, 18611 Heafter his Civil War duties he relocated to the Titusvillle, Pa area in 1865, where he delivered most of the new born Children. His birthing records indicates that he delivered all of Mary Ann Barr Carrolls Children. Now, to what this researcher has reason to think is the Barr/ Carl/ Carroll connection : Charles C. Carroll was born in Ontario, Canada about 1843. He left Canada, and came down into New York where he enlsted in Company A, 165th. Infantry Reginent to serve in our Civil War. He was wounded at Port Hudson, La. and after discharge made his way to Titusville, Pa. where he married Mary Ann Barr. In Canada, his family went by the surname Carl rather than Carroll, It was likely the French version of the name. He Continued to use the Carl Surname during his Civil War Servive . On the 1870 Census of Crawford Co. Pa. He and Mary Ann were using this surname. In the birthing records od George W. Barr, M.D. they are listed as CARL rather than Carroll. In the 1880 census of Oil creek Twp., Crawford Co. Pa. they started to use the Carroll Surname. This researcher has reason to believe that this Carroll family were originally from New York and may of been Relatives of the Barrs, at that time. Then they relocated to Ontario Canada with Charles C. returning to New york to participate in the Civil War and moving on to Titusville in like manner that George W. Barr did. Hoping that this all will strike a responsive cord in some Barr lister. Kenneth L. McIntyre, Victorville, Ca.

Hi Russ, In reading your letter, I noticed that you have SHAFFER listed. I have been working on some of my GROVE/GROFF family from Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. Originally the name was GROFF, and they were Mennonites from someplace in Germany. They moved to Virginia/West Virginia, and then to Ohio. I can't find my papers right now, but I believe there were BEAR'S/BARR'S and SHAFER'S. On the 1850 census for Woodford Co., Ohio, my ggg-grandmother, Elizabeth, (REINHART/RINEHART) GROVE, born in Virginia in 1791, has 5 children of her own, and a child named Mary Ann SHAFER, age 8, living with her. One of Elizabeth's daughters, Barbara GROVE, born 1810, married a Willis SHAFER/SHAFFER, born 1812, so I suspect, this child, Mary Ann, is a grandchild of Elizabeth's. Barbara later married a Joseph MEEK. I think there are also McFADDEN'S somewhere in this family, and I know there are BROWNFIELD'S, KENDIG'S, STINE/STEIN, MEEK, HERR, TANTON, STEWART, PAGE, THOMPSON, STINE, HALL and HOUCKS. These names are the names of the people Elizabeth's children married. As far as I know there were 11 GROVE/GROFF children. Some of these people also lived in Arkansas. Just found my papers, and the name of mine is Anna BARE/BEAR/BARR. Do any of these names ring a bell with you? My great grandfather's name was John Buchanan Barr who was I believe born in Ontario, Canada. He lived with my grandmother, Sara Johnston, for many years and they had many children together on a farm near Alliston, Ontario. It was always a puzzle why he never married her but my mother tells me he was already married to a woman in the United States and couldn't get remarried. Does anyone have a John Buchanan Barr in their family?

I'm still going in circles on this man. "Thank you" to everyone that has tried to help. The other names I have, is a list of marriages. They could possibly be his siblings. David/Susanna Ridenour 10/2/1805 Christopher/Barbara Toby 4/13/09 My 3rd gr. grandparents John/Betsy Rohrer l/19/11 Jacob/Mary Miller 5/21/11 Benj./Mary Tutwiler 3/7/16 John/Nancy Winders 3/8/25 John/Mary Showman 2/8/26 Christian/Susanna Bachtel 6/3/16 There are other female Barrs but their dates are much later. Christopher/Barbara Toby, John/Mary Buck, William Dunn/Mary Elizabeth Estes, Harvey Colwell/Virdie White. are the main names. My Harvey was born here in Iowa in 1880. I found a Harvey in Tenn today that was also from England, so I must try to find out about that. I also found two books listed on Familysearch, "The Promised Land: the story of the Barr colonists by C. Wetton. Also, Muddling Through: the remarkable story of the Barr colonists by Lynn Bowen. The Barr Colony covered land in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. I suppose anything is possible here but I can't believe this has anything to do with my Barrs but maybe it will help some one else. I found a John Barr on the list of the Ship "Defence" on 19 Sept 1776 for state of MD. I've decided to study their travel habits. MD. to Holmes Co. Ohio, to Whitely, Ind. Have no idea how they got to west central Iowa from Indiana in 1854, and I've copied every census I can find. I have no idea how to find church information from that area. I love old newspaper clippings. I think they give a true picture of life during that time. Sorry if I'm long winded!! Ruth in SW Iowa
Let me re-phrase that - I had their children and their childrens families in Illinois - I had never been able to pin down just where in PA John and Martha came from. Martha (Walter)Barr's obit says she was b. in New Jersey, but the census records I found for her said she was b. in Pennsylvania. I also have a copy of Martha's will.
