    3. Shari: Why not give the information you have. Your question is terribly confusing. The index, if that is what you have, will not tell you much of anything. Actually, from the index you can't be real sure you even have the right guy. What you need is a copy of the actual pension application. 99% of the time the pension will not give the parents' names. However, it should say when and where the applicant was born, where he lived when he enlisted or was inducted, the units he served in, when he was released from active duty and where he lived when he got out of the service. When the applicant died his widow is likely to applied for a pension. His pension file might give his date of death but his widow's pension application, if there is one, would tell when he died, when and where they married and possibly have something about their children. So, if all you have is an index, you need the actual (copy of) the pension. Depending on which war you are referencing, a lot of the files are on microfilm. Knowing when and where an ancestor is born is helpful in finding out the name(s) of potential parents as it places your guy in a time and place to research potential parents and other relatives.
