Does anyone have a Penelope or Nellie Barnett in their line in SC or AL, ca. 1810-1820? I have the estate settlement papers for the estate of James Barnett, who died in SC (we think) about 1813, but the estate was settled beginning in 1817 in what was then Montgomery County, Alabama, Mississippi Territory. Anyhow, the settlement names several people that I am not familiar with, including a Penelope, a Polly and a Rachel. I am assuming these are all Barnetts, no last name is given. The administrator of the estate was James' widow, Isabel (Isabella) Johnston Barnett, who had moved to AL by 1816 with her children following James' death. Polly and Rachel are listed because Isabel claimed having provided room and board for them for 2 1/2 yrs, and states they are both under 14. Penelope's name is found in the list of household goods gotten by Isabel from the estate - it lists a bedstead and mattress for Isabel and a bedstead and mattress for what appears to be the name "Penelope". (No mention of beds for Polly or Rachel.) Could Penelope have been Isabel's mother-in-law? We know nothing of the parents or siblings of James or Isabel. None of these names applies to the children of James and Isabel, or their grandchildren, so far as we know. If you have a Polly, a Rachel, or a Penelope who disappeared from SC ca. 1816, please let me know! I may know where they went!! All help appreciated. Sherry Bowers
