Hi Diane: Actually the mutations are normal evolution and has nothing to do with chemicals and aliens, etc. You will have to read about them on the website (both the Barnett DNA one and the Family Tree DNA one. I thik I copied on our website what was on the FTDNA website). It is expected that mutations occur at any time but are anticpated every so many generations-like 25 or more, I forgot. What is important to us in the DNA genetics field is the step mutations tell us how far or close two people are related. That is the purpose of having as many allelles/markers as possible. The more markers the closer in time the realtionships between the people can be compared. The people in group 2 matching exactly with 37 markers shows they are pretty closly related. The people in group 1 matching at 25 markers but not matching on 37 shows the realtionship is close but not real close. The website explains the distances in generations that the step mutations should be showing us. Hope this helps but doubt it will. It may be better togo to the website and read what is there. There is an explaination of genetic distances. Or could the mutations be some weird influence from the female side - therefore you are still as closely related as you first thought? Ohhhh - I am getting confused - and sooo ready to believe any Barnett related to me is a mutant - I know my brothers and sons too well, you see!
