Dear listers I ask you all to drop further comment on the "Satan" thread. It has now been dealt with adequately. How should be deal with the threatened loss of a cemetery? There are a number of actions that can be taken. Firstly, contacting the authority overseeing the cemetery and attempting to sway their views. Remember, if your arguments are not well based or become emotional they are likely to get dismissed. Secondly, form a group "friends of the cemetery". Make sure that authorities and potential owners of the land are aware that there is interest in that particular plot of land by a broad based group of citizens. Then get out and make sure that the cemetery records are preserved, list all burials on a web site (that will generated further interest), photograph every monument and transcribe every monumental inscription and put the MIs up on a web site. Once again, this will increase the level of awareness and interest in your target cemetery. This means that even if the cemetery is lost, the genealogical data will remain for future generations. Food for thought. In the meantime, if anyone has a Thomas Barnett who was born in England between 1815 and 1850 (I am missing a number of them) or a Peter Barnett born 1820 (wife Martha Martin and known children Thomas Peter b. 1843, Harriet Ann b. 1845, Emma b. c. 1847, Sarah Elizabeth b. 1849 and Jane b. 1851 - all born near Henley in Oxfordshire, England) I would love to hear from you.
