Hi Lisa: I would think your guy would have been a part of the Spartanburg, SC group of Barnetts that was in Perry County, AL as early as 1818. In my case (Glenn Barnett born in Spartanburg and wife Priscilla Day married 1821 in Perry Co, AL) as the Indians moved out of Alabama they moved EAST into Coosa-Tallapoosa-Macon and other counties in Central AL. I do know other Barnetts from SC moved into Georgia first and moved over to AL over time. However, I know of other Barnetts who lived in Georgia as early as the Revolution and were not a part of the Spartanburg clan that were in Morgan County. Morgan County was a good stopping place along the road. Many people stopped there and later continued their journey to wherever they were headed. The Heards were a part of the society of early Georgia that was associated with another branch of Barnetts who came from Virginia to Georgia. It would not surprise me to find this same group may have been related to the Spartanburg bunch at an earlier time in Virginia. At this time I do not know that. I am administrator of the Barnett Surname DNA Project. If you have someone from your line who is currently named Barnett we would like to have them be tested and compare the results to others taking the test. The Project has a website at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com scroll down and click on the Project link. At present we have 6 in the test group. One participant's results are posted. We have two results due any day and two more in a couple weeks, plus one or more comming that we know about. It will be interesting to se what we come up with. Hi Mic, I've seen Glenn Barnett quite a bit in my research. He bought federal land (see Perry Co. Land Records excerp below) and I have him listed on the 1820 and 1830 census. I'm building a list of all Barnetts that appear in the early records of Perry Co. and trying to investigate each in hopes that I'll find a connection. So far I found some really interesting families and stories, but none that I can prove are linked to my ancestor. I have heard about the Surname DNA project, but this is my mother's mother's family. To get a direct male Barnette from our line we'd have to go back to my grandmother's brother's sons. I'll have to see if anyone in my immediate family knows any of these people and we'll ask them if they'd like to "donate for the cause". As a biology major, I thought this was pretty interesting when I read about the whole thing. I will definitely check back to see what results the project is generating. Pre 1908 Perry Co.
