Hi Art: According to colonial and early American naming traditions Polly was a nickname for Mary, not Hannah, Elizabeth or Sarah. Going by name/nickname it is not likely Polly was Hannah, Elizabeth or Sarah, daughters of Charles and Sarah Stapleton. If your Polly was born 1770 or before she would have been at least 29 years old in 1799 when she married James Barnett. This is pretty old for a woman's first marriage. If Polly was truely age 29 at the time of her marriage to James Barnett might she be a widow Stapleton, the widow of a man named Stapleton who had died. For this you should check probate (testate and intestate) records. You might check marriage records about 10 years earlier for a Polly/Mary (any last name) to a Stapleton. It is common to find wives signing release of dower rights when their husbands sold land. This is particularly true in Virginia and Kentucky. You might try land records to see if you can find James and Polly selling land. Hopefully, you have worked your census records and know the age of your James and Polly Barnett and see if they fit the age category for someone of the age bracket 1755-1770. You can also check probates (testate and intestate) for parents of James and Polly and see if you can find a Stapleton with a daughter named Polly Barnett or Barnett grandchildren.
