    1. [BARNETT] Barnett's from Mary Barnett Book.b abt 1849
    2. Maxine Wilton
    3. For those who didn't get this from Poca list in 1999. watch for more from book. Helllo Barnett's; EPISODE 1..... Barnett; I will post some imfo I have from an old Book written by a Mary A. Barnett b 22 Sep 1845 in southern INDIANNA. She printed her biography in 1923. The BARNETT connection to her family began in the book with the following Family story and History handed down to Mary and researched by her in old records, in all places involved that could possibly be found and used in this biography.. at the time of printing. She is connected to the Mr and Mrs James Dare family. Parents of Virginia Dare. I was told this story when I was a young girl about the truth of the POCOHANTAS . (I have not found a connection to my Barnett's here unless it was in England which I have not researched) ( During my search for Barnett's beginning I had met and heard about several others that also were told this story by their ancestors.) ( So how could others who have been told they were descend of Pocohantas have the same story I was also told by my Granfather after it had been handed down the family from Generation to Generation not have at least some truth in it.) Mary Barnett b 1849's story. In 1596 a little daughter was born to Mr and Mrs James Dare who was christened , VIRGINIA in honor of the Virgin Queen of England. A short time after birth of Little Virginia, her Mother and father died of the Swamp Fever, which soon depopulated the whole colony. As the last white man felt he was becoming ill with the deadley fever he gave Little Virginia to an Indian Squaw with his dying blessing on them both. The Squaw carried the babe to her Chief and reverently laid her gift at his feet. The mighty Chief took her in and loved her as his own and adopted her into his own family and named her MATOX, He didn't have a daughter of his own and raised her as his own being proud of her and she was raised like the other's in the Indian Tribe who looked on her as the daughter of their Chief, Powhatan.. IT WAS VIRGINIA WHO SAVED THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN JOHN SNMITH and ALSO THE 3rd SETTLEMENT OF Jamestown from a total massacre. James Smith said in one of his own books that. Pocahantas was next to GOD as a savior. She was capturred by Capt. Argal when but 18 yrs of age at Jamestown where she stayed for abt 3 yrs untill her marriage to John Rolfe and went with him to England. She had traveled 12 miles by night barefoot to warn the Colony of the 3rd Jamestown of Powhatan's plan to massacre Jamestown . We also know that Powhatan only had 2 sons who were both killed in battles and when the Chief was ill and felt he was to die, he conveyed all his possesions to his only sister and some bros. except some land in Virginia in 1622 which he left to Thomas Rolfe son of his adopted dau. Pocahantas. Pocahantas was baptied in the Christian Church and given the name of Rebecca. She mar the white man named John Rolfe, a Englishamn at Jamestown in 1615. To them was born a son they named Thomas Smith Rolfe for Capt. John Smith and Thomas Dale second Govenor of Virginia. In 1616 she and her husband and baby son, Thomas went to England. All of the King and Queen of England and the Lords and Ladies were charmed and called her princess, Lady Rebecca.. They left to return to America as that is where her husband wanted to be. They left and soon after Rebecca developed small pox and so grave was it that they went ashore at Gravesends , where she died and was burried there Her incription can be read this day. >From the London Chronicle, we learn that St. George's church claims the honour of her burial and in it's Parish Registry. contains the following entry, "Rebecca Wrothe, wyffe of John Wrothe , a Virginian. The Lady borne here was burried in ye Channel".. History will have shown that Pocohantas was not a mythe but a real person being none other than the first English Child Borne on American Soil , named Virginia Dare. We also learn that Indian History says that Pocahantas was only a Indian name for a "tomboy" given her by her adopted father, Powhatan. Thomas Rolfe, the only child of Virginia and John Rolfe was mar to Jane Poythress in 1638. Some historian's claim there were 12 children born to this union; but we can only trace three children. Thomas Rolfe, wife Jane Poythress, Children ( known) 1...Jane who mar.Colonel Robert Bolling; 2...Anna, who mar.William Barnett, a frenchman, who came to America in 1662. 3... John Rolfe ( Mary, the writer) had just been told by his family that his Granson, a Thomas Rolfe, visited at Edinburg abt sixty or seventy yrs ago and returned south. NOTE: THis book was written in 1923 so there is a L apse of time here between when Mary wrote this imformation and when she printed the book. i will pick up here in my next post of Genealogicle imfo of the Barnett side of this family. Episode 2. We have here Thomas Rolfe mar Jane Poythress Will continue with the , Children of William Barnett. What we have of Jane, Anna, John Rolfe. Maxine Wilton mmwaw@sprynet.com There is more about this etc. but I want to do the Genealogy of her here. i will

    3. cont Sec 2 page 2. Ref to article of Thomas D. Spratt to Draper. NC Lib. Page 26/27 YCGHS Spt. 1994. Thomas D. Spratt letter with History and Genealogy imfo. Written 7 May 1873 and appears in Draper MS 15 VV 106-8.) excerpts portions. In some of Spratt's words;;; I felt interest to get imfo abt David Garrison and my inquiries where un rewarded. Additional inquiries and research found following. I had an Uncle, Isaac Garrison who died and bur. in our family Cem, his widow, sons & Dau's moved in 1821, some to Madison Co AL., some to Madison and Fayette Co's Tnn. Thomas died in Fayette Co. Tn in 1851 and left descend'ts, but can't recollect them just now. Reese Garrison settled in Madison Co AL near Huntsville and had a large family of which I don't know their wherabouts. A Benjamin and Mark O. Garrison were living near me in the Western area of the Catawba and their father was David G. Garrison. He commanded the Catawbas in the Rev Peter Garrison of Ebenezer in this Co. and his P O is Rock Hill, SC or Milton Garison, a baptist Preacher of this township are the only two descend'ts I could most reliably refer you to for imfo on generally. Peter Garrison is a lay Delegate to Gen. Assembly the Presbyterian Church South now at Little Rock Ar. would take interest in a inquiry. I don't know about Cpt. Smith. Alexander Haynes was born & raised abt 5 mi. So. of Charlotte, Mecklenburgh .NC but moved since just after close of Revolution to York Co. SC. He settled near mouth of Steel Creek abt 4 mi. from Ft Mill and liv! ed untill his death in 1831 /2 and bur in Old Unity Church cem abt 1 mi from Ft Mill at abt 75 yrs old. he was wounded in neck by sword cut at Hanging Rock which disfigured his face also injuring 1 eye. He bought land of my granfa, an old plat and lease which from Indian as I remember haveing had seen amoung my fa's papers. The place since owned by Eli Kibrell and now beleive in possesion of Cpt. S F White. Alex Haynes ' bro. David H. Haynes was killed in Rev war and left a son name David, who lived and died on fa's acres. Wm Ayers, ( Catawba Indian), died in Providence Settlement, NC abt 2 mi. from Church of same name and bur at Sandy Ridge Church nearby, Bill Geo. abt oldest of Catawba's now seems to have a meagre rememebrance of his anscestors of Rev. times. he lives close and farming and I may catch him and get more imfo abt Catawba's. I don't know abt a Mary Ayers ( Catawaba Indian) or forgot whatever now. Jacob Scott had no other name was chief of tribe in 1819. He was very dark Indian and was one of ___ ___ ___ the party under Sumter.... The Whigs of rev War. Their actions done chiefly I beleive in lower NC near Charleston. The only other thing i remember abt them in war is something I heard when a boy from the mouth of old Peter Harris ( Catawba Indian adopted by Thomas Dryden Spartt's gran fa. Thomas "Kanawah" Spratt), one of the band who got a gun from enemy at the actions of Stono and kept it while he lived and left it to my fa. Most of old people gone now, Oldest man in our region is James Thorn abt 80 yrs and he couldn't remember anything abt them He did have a dram or two much at times. In reply to your former inquirey abt distance of Hagler's mill to Old Nation Ford, I beleive it is correctly abt 2 mi. from Ft mill and 5 mi from Old N. Ford on [point of Catawba where CC7 A Railroad Bridge crosses it. You ask of Sumpter going from Hagler's Hill to Clems Branch prob. took a direct course. From the positions of present Fords of Steel and Sugar creeks, I should infer that he must have made conciderable circuit to the North of a straight line between those two points but as these streams are fordable at different places and as these places may have changed since then it is possible and probable that he took a direct course or nearly so. Clems Branch empties into Sugar Creek on the east side of Lancaster Co. on the plantation formerly belonging to Richard Springs, a gran fa of Col. A B Springs who tells me he has corresponded with you who has interest into your inquirey but at ast from him , he hadn't had much imfo. His grt gran fa was at Gates' ! defeat but I supose was never under Sumters command., ( my gran fa ) was wounded by 2 buckshot to his thigh while serving under Gen Davie in the action of his cavalry at Wahab's Lane. He was held on his horse away anf brought home by his NEPHEW THOMAS BARNETT and another man nameed FARIS, I believe. He was lying there when CornWallis ( Cornwallis) , Rawdon, and Tarleton , on their route from Charlotte to Winnsboro were stopped by a _____ in the Catawba and camped for abt a week. While that army here encamped a major Frazer died and bur in one corner of the yard under a honey locust tree In my youth traces of the grave were still visible and the precise spot I couldf now point out. Instead of a party of British as you observe, it was the entire army. They changed direction of march and went down the river and crossed near Land's Ford.... I can;t say for certain, that my gran fa THOMAS SPRATT was previously in company up to the time of his wound. He died July 1807 age 76. The British treated the family respectfully, while camped here, the headquarters , being in the houses. Some of the incidents I beleive I have related before abt the shooting of the sentinel party of Whigs. The hanging of the deserter on the wild cherry street. the stump of which still stands, the leaving of the man hanging , etc. The first bait for the Army was a pen of 19 fine calves ( at ) this house, the cows, their mothers fortunately saved by a faithful negro named Harry who kept them in an enclosure several miles from home at a place where he had a cabin called hence , the Cabin Branch to this day. signed THOMAS D. SPRATT. end of imfo I have on this. The Thomas and Thomas Spratt are the ones connected to the Barnett's/ Spratts who came from ireland to Pa then to NC in 1700's and lived in NC and SC at this time period. Their families inter mar with and also w/ others. Maxine mmwaw@sprynet.com

    3. Need proof of parentage of Nathan Barnett born ca 1818 in S.Carolina. Married Amanda Francis Johnson 1 Apr 1842 in Forsythe County Georgia. Need her parentage too. Children all born in Ga. were: Cynthia E. born ca 1844 Martha Ann born 19 Sept 1845, married Spencer W. Burnett Frances E. born ca 1849 Henry L. born ca 1851 Jonathan born ca 1856 Barnabas J. born ca 1858 Julia born ca 1859 Elizabeth born 19 May 1866, married Samuel Alexander William H. born ca 1865 Melvina born ca 1867 Early G. born ca 1875 Nathan seems to be the son of Jonathan Barnett shown in the 1840 census being 40-50 years old. Nathan shows up as head of household in 1850 Forsythe Co Ga, and 1860, 1870, and 1880 Milton Co. Ga. On the 1880 census his wife Amanda is gone and Emilie is shown as his wife. Early G. may be her son. There is also a Hannah Barnett age on the 1850 census of Forsythe which would be right for Nathans mother. Any help would be appreciated. Tom Thompson

    3. Maxine (or anyone else), In your Barnett research have you run across any Levi Barnett's? My gg grandfather, Levi Barnett, was born in Perry Co., AL in 1835, died in Perry Co., AL in 1919, married Margaret Morrison in Perry Co., 1859. or, maybe a male Barnett born around 1795 in Georgia married to a woman named Frances (or Francis, I've seen it spelled both ways), Frances was a widow who lived in Perry Co. AL from at least 1850 - 1870, so I'm assuming that she died between 1870 and 1880. These are Levi's (above) parents. I have really hit a brick wall with this branch. 3. One of the things you need to be careful of is thinking that son-in-law meant the same way back as it does now. It could have referred to a step son (my son by marriage law). It sounds like this is the same line I am dealing with. 3. Maxine, This is great! This will sounds so familiar. I think I came across it, or something like it years ago at the geneology library here in Austin. If no one has ever done research there, it is worth the trip. It is in a wonderful old State building downtown next to the Capitol. I had made the mental note that my Barnett line might have lived on a Plantation, but I did not copy it or anything because I had just started my reserach and I did not have all of the names at that time. Thanks for finding it and transcribing it for all! Have a great day! :>) Laura Massengale ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maxine Wilton" <mmwaw@sprynet.com> To: <BARNETT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 14, 2003 2:01 AM Subject: [BARNETT] Cont. 3. Please don't dismiss these without checking. They may have been misentered in one place or another. As an example - I am in one book with a birthdate that is off by ten years. If I was born in 1969 how come I remember the Apollo moon landing? I really apprec. you doing that. Fabulous! I found a family name of mine (Mattie Ratteree) in the mix. (my line spelled it with 2 r's also) I am hoping to make a connection on that too. So thanks sovery much! I am still trying to make a connection to my Barnett's too! This is a real help! Sincerely, June Hamrick Schaub ( my paternal Grandma was Olla Isabelle Ratterree, and she had an Aunt Mattie Ratterree also....but dates on yours are off by 10 yrs from mine.......but maybe they connect somewhere else.) Also..........Gen. Wade Hampton from the Civil war was ment. in one of your postings...........I can't place it at this time.......but somewhere he comes into my Hamrick side and I am hoping to find the Barnett connection too! ==== BARNETT Mailing List ==== If your research is not progressing as quickly as you would like perhaps a posting to the list outlining what information you have on your problem area may bring success. ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus

    3. Hello Barnett's /Ratteree's; The imfo with these two names came from Barnett genealogy in library of York Co SC. "Recolections of the Spratt Family " by Thomas Dryden Spratt, Fort Mill SC. so is many yrs old. The Spratt's and Barnett's came to Pa in early 1700's from Londonderry, Ireland. Intermarried with each other as well as the Adams, McKenzies, Bigger's, and many other's in NC and S C where they went from Pa. There are many in the Huge Cem of the Bethel Presbyterian Church began in 1700's I believe and still going today. It is also posted on Cem. List of SC. I will find the link and post for all as soon as I can later today. Has anyone out there seen this listing of Cem and have the link, please post for all to be able to access. The Mattie Ratteree ( also the Mattie name may be a nick name ) is spelled that way in this document , but like other surnames has other spellings as Census taker's clerks in Court's and other's spelled things the way they sounded to them at the time. Repeat. CHILDREN of WILLIAM AMZI BARNETT ( son of Al;exander Barnett, son of Thomas Barnett Jr. ). (Alexander was a brother to MY William Barnett b 1778 in York Co Sc.) Joseph Leroy Barnett b 7 Sep 1849, ( incidently this is also my Birth DATE 7 Sep 1928, and I will be 75 yrs old , Maxine Wilton) Joseph married to a Mattie Ratteree on 12 Dec 1888 she was b 14 Apr 1861, d 12 Sep 1948. Most all these named were living in the SC area except for maybe some late 1800's early 1900's. Anyone have more imfo on the Ratteree ( Ratterree ) Family please send to list. Hope I have helped many of you. I have more to be posting. as time permits.
