    1. [BARNETT] David Barnett of Edgefield Co. SC - part 2
    2. When David Barnett located at this place on the Savannah River and began operations at his Boat Yard does not appear, but from a study of history in connection with this region, much of the background can be sketched. Right in the vicinity, which was then in Edgefield District, - the location of the Barnett home being at what was known as Snow Hill, ship building was one of the most profitable businesses of that date. Some of the best ships used in carrying cargoes of cotton from this section into Savannah and Charleston, - the best market for this staple, were built in the shipyards located along the river in and near Edgefield District, - long before other ports were established. Cotton raised and transported from there was shipped principally to England for distribution, - and the ships on their return brought back to the coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia their cargoes of expensive merchandise and luxuries. All the early deeds for land which David Barnett acquired, adjoining and near to his Boat Yard mention a tract granted to Elizabeth Miller, - a much older title. A few years later, David Barnett made a deed, on December 25,1818, conveying this same land, for a consideration of $5500, to John Barnett Covington, who, from other information, we have assumed was his grandson. This deed was witnessed by Thomas Cooper and William Barnett (assumed to be a son of David Barnett,) and attached thereto is a certificate: The State of South Carolina Edgefield District. I, John Tarrence one of the Justices of the Quorum in and for the District aforesaid, do hereby certify unto all whom it may concern that Elizabeth Barnett the wife of the within named David Barnett did this day appear before upon being privately and separately examined by me did declare that she does freely and voluntarily and without any compulsion, dread or fear of any person or persons whomsoever, renounce, release and forever relinquish unto the within named John B. Covington, his heirs and assigns all her interest in estate, and also all her right and claim of dower of us or to all and singular the premises within mentioned and released. Given under my hand and seal this 26th day of December Anno Domino 1818. Elizabeth (her x mark) Barnett (LS) John Tarrance. J.Q. Received December the 30 1818 of John B. Covington Six Thousand dollars in full for the said tract of land. David Barnett Witness: Theo. Cooper There is also attached to said instrument a certificate of William Barnett, the witness to its execution. We know from her signature to deeds made by David Barnett that his wife’s name was Elizabeth, and there is much reason to think that this was the same Elizabeth Miller, and that the Boat Yard which he was operating at the time of the deed to Miledge in 1800 was located on the said Miller grant. On the 30th day of March, 1807, Leroy Hammond, (called in the paper writing Colonel) conveyed to David Barnett 459 acres of land in Edgefield District, on the Savannah River, for the sum of $1340, which is described: “Situate in the District aforesaid on Savannah River, and bounded per plat of said tract as follows, viz: - S & E on Sommers and Millar, being part of said tract, S & W on Peppers line commonly called Snow Hill tract, then joining the river near the mouth of Little River, thence up the river and last on Summers survey again, there being 77 acres taken out of the said survey and added to the present tract.” This instrument was witnessed by James McQueen Leroy Hammond, Junr. Attached to the paper writing is a plat showing location of the David Barnett House and Boat Yard.

    2. List members – I am posting a paper I found on a recent visit to Ashville, NC. It was in a file of loose genealogical papers kept at the public library in Ashville. It confuses and muddies the waters a little bit – and due to the fact there is not much documentation with it, it needs to be checked as thoroughly as possible before it is taken as true as written. Another note I’d like to add here. I have been researching David Barnett of Person Co, NC and Greenville Co, SC for many years. I have always known of another David Barnett who was a contemporary of “my” David. Whether or not they are related has never been established. They both served in the Revolutionary War, they both moved to South Carolina, they both have children with some similar names – like John and William and Thomas – fairly common names for the times. I ran across the following information because I am trying to locate the family of my David’s son, John. There are several hints I have picked up along the way to lead me in his direction – I am still trying to work out the tangle that the following info makes. It may, or may not, be correct. We all know how easy it is for several people of the same names to be living in the same areas & times – that’s what makes this so much fun! Why couldn’t the Chinese have invented computers along with gunpowder and abacuses? I will send this stuff in several parts. Thanx, Diane in Indiana Ref – N.C. – Genealogy – Barnett Pack Memorial Public Library Ashville, N.C. Research and Data Sadie S. Patton The Barnett Family David Barnett, the first ancestor in this family whose record I have obtained, served in the Lower 96th Regiment in Pickens Brigade in South Carolina, (as shown in the D.A.R. The next record of activities is gathered from a deed which David Barnett made on the 2 day of October, 1800 to John Miledge, in the State of Georgia and County of Richmond. “Be it known that I, David Barnett of Edgefield County, State of South Carolina, hath this day sold unto John Milledge of the County and State aforesaid, two acres of land in the District of Edgefield and State aforesaid on Sav’h River, commencing in the upper end of the said Barnett’s boat yard to the upper corner of the said Barnett’s tract, or as far as the said two acres to be opposite to the said Miledge Island Savannah River to run the full extent of the two acres on the said river and as far back as to make two square acres of land for which said land I have this day received the sum of ten dollars from the said John Miledge in full consideration for the said teo acres as aforesaid and bind myself, my heirs, excr’s and assigns to make to the said John Miledge his heirs, execr’s and assigns my good and lawful titles for the two acres as aforesaid whenever required. 3. Hi Diane, That is a great tip...........My JOHN W. BARNETT, was b. Nov. 29, 1800 in Georgia.........I am still trying to find proof of his parents! Found 2-16-01 on the LDS Website to have been married 1823 in Georgia to Zilpha Walpole who was born 1802 Georgia. Zilpha Walpole film # 2,034,426 Film # 2,034,798 It lists John William Barnett b. Nov. 29, 1800 in N.C. ...but we have only seen him b. in GA on the census reports. The last census for him was 1870, San Saba Co., Texas He lists b. GA and his age was listed as 70........his wife Zilpha was listed as b. GA and age 68. More confusion to say the least! Thanks for any and all help, June Hamrick Schaub

    1. [BARNETT] Henry Lewis Barnett - Georgia
    2. Mark Barnett
    3. I am looking for information on Henry Lewis Barnett born about 1851. He is listed as the father on Jesse Sanford Barnett's deather certificate. Jesse was born June 05, 1882 in Georgia and died December 07, 1938 in Symrna, GA. Jesse's mother was listed as Susie Saddler on the death certificate but I think he was married to Sarah J Stephens, born about 1854. I believe that Henry Lewis Barnett was the son of Nathan Barnett, born about 1819 in SC, married to Amanda Frances Johnson as per Atlanta Constitution newspaper article dated August 30, 1888. "A fatal accident happened at B.W. Johns's sawmill near Warsaw, Milton County, last Monday. Mr. Henry Barnett, son of Mr. Nathan Barnett, was bearing off lumber from the saw, when the saw struck a plank in the hands of Mr. Barnett and jerked him so severly that he fell on the saw, which was running rapidly, cutting off his right arm and cutting three deep gashes across his breast. He lived about fifteen minutes after the accident." I have no other tie between Henry and Jesse other than the death certificate and the newspaper article. As Jesse was born after 1880. Other children of Henry and Sarah are Marietta Barnett, born June 1877, died 1920, married to Berry Garmon Robert N Barnett, born about 1879 in Georgia Annie J Barnett, born about 1888, married Jesse T. Garrett in 1906 Possibly a fifth child, ? Barnett 1910 Milton Co., GA census shows Sarah J Barnett (living with Annie) had 5 children - 4 living. First time I can find Jesse in the census is 1910 in Gwinnett CO, GA Regards Mark Barnett

    1. [BARNETT] Early American ancestors
    2. I know there are some US folks on the BURNETT list also maybe ENG-STS-GNOSALL-L@rootsweb.com list where these BURNET-PACE ancestors lived in the early 1700s and spread out to other counties/shires or shores. In this regard I've been busy with some colonial Virginia history as a RICHARD PACE settled at Jamestown about 1611 Richard - First Pace in America http://www.phc.igs.net/~gordpace/lines/lineage0001.htm In the 4th generation in Virginia PACE history (1690s) there appeared two JOHN PACEs This was confusing for decades. The PACE name, being a "First Name" in colonial Virginia, now-a-days, has many diligent researchers across the US as can be imagined. A DNA study was undertaken in 2003 and found my test results matched 25 of 25 tests with today's descendents of one John Pace, Middlesex County, VA. of the 1690s one of the two largest groups of US Paces http://www.phc.igs.net/~gordpace/lines/john-mid/jp.htm I think this is amazing! and being born in the UK myself, a new door has opened to many researchers looking into their family roots. This may link some of the BURNET=PACE folk to an interesting flow of history too. The BURNET-PACE connection was also early 1700s http://www.phc.igs.net/~gordpace/uk/1000.htm Please have a look at the web pages, maybe other surnames of interest show up. There are links to the DNA study and good interpretation on how to 'understand' the matter and applications to research. Gord Pace - Brighton,Ontario http://www.phc.igs.net/~gordpace/

    3. I have not posted the following in a while, so I am posting it again in the hopes someone new may have joined that has information. Thanks. Looking for ancestors, information on William Barnett b. March 20, 1825. I do not know where. His mother's maiden name may possibly have been Ballew. He married Elizabeth Caroline Allen, March 1847 in Gallatin, Illinois. Their children are: Sarah F. (1864-??), Alem (1851-??), James Zechariah (1855-1920), Mary L. (1856-??) Angeline (1859-??) Mollie Rhoda. James Zachariah married Lourella (Lilly) Tiora Gibson (1865-1956) February 1, 1883 probably in McLeansboro, Illinois. I just recently received information that Lourella's mother was Cherokee Indian but do not have her name. I do have a picture of her though. They had the following children: Eben Elben (1884-1918) Bertha E. (1885-1966) William Wilson (1889-1952) Charley Washington Barnett (1893-???) Eben (Eb) married Rosa Agnes Trammell (1884-1975) February 21, 1907 in McLeansboro, Illinois. They had the following children: Harry Dale (1908-1962) Larry (1910-1912) James R. (1913-1984) Harry is my father and I have more information on the family that I would be glad to share. Researching Barnett, Carey, Thurman, Trammell, Wrenn.

    3. Hi Mary: I see your surname is Barnett. Whether by marriage or birth, you should have some male Barnett relatives. I am the administrator of the Barnett Surname DNA Project (I get no compensation for doing so. I am simply an active Barnett researcher). Currently there are a number of us Barnetts who have taken DNA tests to see scientifically how we relate or do not relate to one another. You can visit our website at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com to see what is happening with our group. You can also visit the DNA testing company's website as well at http://www.familytreeDNA.com DNA testing will not tell you who your Barnett ancestor is by name but it will tell you if the person who took the test in your family relates to others in the test group. It will also give you a several generation spread of a likely timeframe as to when the relationship may have occurred. We have had several surprising results in the testing. As a woman you can not take the test as women do not inherit their father's Y-Chromosome. You can, however, sponsor a male Barnett in your family either by encouraging him to take the test or by paying or having his test paid for by others of your family. After visiting the websites, please feel free to contact me for more information. Most of us in the test group have taken the 25 marker test. FTDNA has just recently come out with a 37 marker test that several of us will probably upgrade to which will make our information more reliable as to how closely (generation wise) we relate. 3. Hi! I submitted this information to the list in August of 2003 and thought I would try again. I am a descendant of John Oliver Barnett, listed here as the fifth child of William Barnett and Susannah Short. John Oliver Barnett came to Texas in 1845-46 with his wife, Elizabeth Redford and her family. He became a Primitive Baptist minister and pastored a church near Brenham, Texas in his adult life. I have a great deal of documentation on him and his descendants. For a long time, I could not link John Oliver Barnett to a set of parents, and then received a great deal of information from Barbara Barnett Suddeth, a descendant of Ephraim Barnett, first child of William Barnett and Susannah Short. She said that her information was compiled for her family by a professional genealogist, but I have lost touch with her. I would like to confirm this documentation, principally the content that this same William Barnett b. 1790 had two families. I have seen the children from each family listed with one set of parents, but would like to find a source or sources that give this same William Barnett b. 1790 as the husband of first, Susannah Short and secondly, as the husband of Susannah White. I have a great deal of additional information on each set of children (marriages and children down through several generations). If anyone is a descendant of the children from either marriage of William Barnett b. 1790, I would very much like to exchange information with you. 1. WILLIAM BARNETT (???1) was born 1790 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1870 in Lawrence Co., TN. He married (1) SUSANNAH SHORT Abt. 1811 in Barren Co., Ky. 3. 3. I don't have anything. But have you thought about the name Berry? Could it be a nickname? Also, frequently, mother's name their children their last names. Could his mother possibly have the last name of Berry? Look for Berry's during that time period in S.C.
