Thought I would check to see if anyone out there is connected with Nancy (Nannie) Barnett from Wytheville/Bluefield/Tazewell or in that area? I have a picture of her with Uriah McCoy, but I do not know where she is buried. Nannie was born 1848 in Wytheville or Tazewell, VA, we think. The picture of her and Uriah was taken in Bluefield, WV, but they lived in Tazewell, VA, we think. Thanks much. No, My ggrandmother Susan BARNETT from Henderson County NC that married, first James Columbus ALLISON in 1859. He died at camp Douglas during the Civil War as a POW. In 1867 his cousin Francis "Frank" Henry ALLISON married Susan. They are my ancestors. I can take our BARNETT line back to SC and GA, but before the late 1700 I don't know where they were for sure. Joe I guess I should have sent this to the Barnett=L and not to you directly but I will put this on there. My family is Andrews son Peters family. Peter had a son Benjamin Barnett born 1801 in Baltimore Maryland. Benjamin married Sarah Fickel and they had two children. Lydia and Joseph. Joseph married Sarah Trehune in Ohio and they had 4 children . One of these was Benjamin Franklin Barnett and he was my Husbands grandfather and they lived in Van Buren Co. Ia. Dont think any of these Barnetts went south because Peter took his family around 1815 to Perry Co. Ohio and then Joseph and Benjamin found their way to Iowa. Patricia

Maybe he came from Ireland or England??? Also have you checked the www.rootsweb.com and other posting places of Family Genealogy?? Try it. pick family trees at the top. Put in your name. A list of those will come up.n If too many of same name . Can pick the Advanced search and get names with the imfo you put in. If don't get any may have to delete some of your imfo and try more times. The Barnett DNA Surname website has been updated. See particularly the Participant and Results pages. The website address is http://micbarnette.bravepages.com To date there are 14 participants. The results for 8 have been returned and the results for 4 more are expected within the next few weeks. Two people who received kits have not returned them to the lab. We have two groups of people who have matched one another. The first group contains four people: Participant 0001 (Kit 9386) and Participant 0003 (Kit 10518) and Particpant 0008 (Kit 15986) all match 25 for 25 markers Participant 2 (Kit 10391) matches the other three 24 for 25 markers. The second group has two participants. Participant 4 (Kit 10812) and Participant 5 (Kit 10943) are 25 for 25 marker matches. In addition we have two participants named Barney who have joined the group. You can read more about the test and view the results on the website at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com just click on the DNA website link. You can see the DYS chart on the Results and Anaysis Page. Family Tree DNA publishes a free e-zine each month. Anyone interested in DNA studies will enjoy reading it. There is a link on our wesbite and one from the FTDNA website to subscribe to it. Family Tree DNA now offers a 37 marker Y-DNA test. I will be upgrading to that marker test when I finally get my Christmas bills paid down some. We all to consider upgrading, particularly those who have matches with other participants. The increase in markers will enable us to know more precisly how close we relate to anyone we match. You can read about it on the FTDNA website. Also there is a new free program where anyone can place their marker results in a free database at www.ysearch.org I have not done so yet but will do so in the near future. I have seen a link on my private DNA page of FTDNA where I can click on a link and go to the page to insert my marker information. Anyone, no matter which company tested the sample, can participate in the database. If two people took their tests through different companies, this database is able to determine if the two relate or not. Both parties have to have their marker values in the database. We need more participants. It is not necessary for the person taking the test to pay for it. If you are researching Barnetts try to find a male in your family still named Barnett and who descends from your ancestor. The website describes the website and where to obtani the test kit. MIC MIC

Ah Ha, FAIRVIEW, COOS CO OR. YES you bet there is as I was there in 1985 looking for my Grt Granfa., William Anderson Barnett b in 1853/4 in Farmington , Grayson Co Tx d in Dec 1919 in Fairview but bur in Mrytle Point as I found out in Fairview. when I went there. I talked to the oldest living couple there who wouldn't let me take their picture. They had been to house parties and dances in early 1900's with Wilima's son who died after war at abt 35 and dau lena who died of sleeping sickness when just abt 24. BUT I also have heard and seena address of a FAIRVIEW in either Multomah or Washington Co. near Portland Or ????? The Rarview in Coos Co. is indead abt thw smallest a community can be. I saw one little olf bldg which ahd been a little store and old fashioned gas pumping for ood cars but then new. It had a cornet entrance and on a cornetr. Not far from the old Cem there. I had to walk abck along a fence and all grown up etc. This old couple told me he was bur in Myrtle Point. IRONICALLY, I went there to the City Hall. I asked abt the Cem there. They said just 2 weeks before they had finialy gotten an old safe opened from so many yra before that sat and no one ever got it opened till them,\. GUESS What??? In it was the first book on the Cemetery there. On the first page is where my Grt Grafa. William Anderson Barnett bought a 8 plot cem blk for $5.00, yes only $ 5.00 and I ent there. Grt granpa William and 2nd wife, Sarah Ann Hayes Batrnett were both there. I big oblong Black Onyx Stone bore their names and dates. William had brought it back from Ohio after Sarah had died in 1909 I believe and it is imbeded in a biger concrete stone. Also is bur there dau Lena and a son if I remember corrdtly name of Chester, and also another couple who came from Ohio and are related to William as a either sister or bro, and spouce of his or Sarah's. Name May have been West or Barnett. Would have to check as I also took pictures of them. I can still see that nice beautifull Black Onyx Stone still shinning in the bright warm Sun that day I was there. I also gave the clerk a check for 25.00 to cover her son's work for me to clean up the plotts and cut out a root near by. I also left a note that I was there (but it now has old address on it.) , in the Cem book as they let me attach one to the page which I also got a copy of as William had signed it. My Grt Gran fa and Step grt granmother.. My gran fa John Robert Barentt b 7 oct 1875 in Tx. was but 14 yrs old when he arrived there with his Fa William and family in 1889. Having traveled from Tx up through Utah, Idaho via part of the Old Oregon Trail and south at The Dalles over the Mt. to the Willamette Valley to Araago, Coos Co Or. John's mother having died when he was very young in 1877 in Tx. John had also witnessed a Bear attack on a young mar man in the wagon train which killed him and left a young wife and baby who were left at Boise Id. Name of FREEMAN. from Ky otr Tn. Boy what an expeirence. They must have had and I know I did in looking for the burial them. Hello Joe, I am sorry I can't be more help. This line is not really mine - I stumbled on it while looking for info about a different John Barnett. It was old information and in a fairly private collection - I don't know if it has been photocopied anywhere else or not, so I thought I would share it with the list. I can use all the help I get and I know there are others out there with the same issues. Like looking under rocks for any clue, jsut to know they really did exist. David Barnett owned several tracts of land on Little River. On February 26, 1828, he bought from his brother-in-law, John Hamilton, 200 acres of land, with the cabin, orchard and old tub mill,- the deed witnessed by Abraham and John Kuykendall. The old tub mill, mentioned in this deed, was the earliest type of water operated contrivance for grinding corn that was used by the first white settlers in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The few examples still in existence are being carefully preserved, - most of these have been found and are to be seen in the Smokey Mountain park area. David Barnett and Loveday, his wife on April 19, 1832, only a short time before her death, conveyed their property on Little River to her brother, William Hamilton, and others. In this instrument, Loveday also relinquished any claim which she might have had to the dower right of Ann Hamilton, her step-mother, in lands of Robert F. Hamilton, deceased. John Barnett, Sr., and his wife, in their later life, returned to Edgefield District, where they were buried, in graves which have been lost to sight. The time at which they left North Carolina can not be fixed with certainty. In 1830, when Charles Barnett conveyed some of his property in an instrument witnessed by John Merrill and his brother, John Barnett, this latter signed as Jr, which tends to prove that the father was living here at that time. After the death of Loveday Hamilton Barnett, in 1833, her children were cared for by relatives of the two families. One daughter, Elizabeth, (who married John Rickman) was seven years old at the time. She lived until 1911, and often related to her children and grand children stories of the time she spent with her grandparents, John Barnett, Sr., and his wife. She pointed out location of the tavern, (near where Woodfields now stands) where she stayed with them, while they were its proprietors. This old tavern, at the time the first Low Country people came to Flat Rock, about 1824, was kept by William Brittain, Later a family named Summey lived there, and for years, Joseph Barnett and his wife, Permelia Sentell, (daughter of William Sentell and wife, Betty Stevens) kept the place. They were succeeded by their son, Perry Barnett, and it was during his time, in the closing years of the War Between the States, that roving bands of soldiers invaded his home. In their raid, the ruffians overturned a bed where his children were sleeping, and broke up other furniture. After the death of his wife, Loveday, David Barnett moved to a site near the present Mud Creek Church where he engaged in cabinet work, furniture making and wagon building for several years. He spent the closing years of his life manager of a farm which Henderson County maintained as a County Home, not far from location of the present one on the Haywood Road. The second wife of David Barnett was Mary Merrill, a daughter of William and Elizabeth Ashworth Merrill, who had come to the famous Crab Tree Creek section from Fairview. (For further data on the family of William Merrill, see THE MERRILL FAMILY, by Dr. William Ernest Merrill). David Barnett, with both his wives and other members of the family are buried in the old graveyard at Mud Creek Church, near Hendersonville. This historic old church, organized in 1806, stood on the bank of the old State road leading from the Low Country, through upper South Carolina, to Asheville and on to Tennessee. Traces of the old highway are still to be seen there.
Long before white settlers ever found their way into that section, pass ways and travel lanes of the Indians wound through its valleys and around the mountains, - the old Willow Trail of traditions, the Trading Path leading across by Cherryfields to Table Rock, and the Estatoe route. Over these passes by which the Cherokees and others before them had made their way to the little town of Kanastee, near where Brevard is now located, - with their bypaths, - was laid the first beaten track for the road which venerable Bishop Asbury traveled. Over them, from French Broad Valley, he has passed the headwaters of Little River and its sister, Saluda, through the gap in the mountain to ancient father Douthats in Greenville County, South Carolina, just after 1800. Did the group of emigrants from the Savannah River know they were coming into the newly opened frontier of North Carolina? It was several years after the first of them arrived before the century-old dispute between North and South Carolina over location of the boundary line was settled. Even when that had been accomplished, the sister state of Georgia still could not be reconciled that Caesars Head lay outside her bounds, which she contended should rightly extend almost to the south of Ben Davidsons mill creek, only a few miles from Crab Tree Creek! Remote as that section may seem to us of today, the settlement on Little River remained, until after the organization of Henderson County in 1838, within the centre of population in its area. When, in the generations that have passed since, the hardships of their pioneer years can be forgotten, the little community where these ancestors settled now appears as a group of families who brought here a mode of living, standards of education and such manner of life as existed in the coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia. Several families among them were owners of slaves, and all acquired large boundaries of land. Through much of it was tillable and in cultivation, the surrounding forests abounded with its native game and the streams furnished abundant fishing. At the time the contingent from Edgefield arrived on Little River, they found already living there Robert Franklin Hamilton, an Irishman from Charleston, and William Merrill, whose family were among those who had come from the Jersey Settlement of Rowan County to Cane Creek some time before 1790, as well as Samuel King, a Revolutionary patriot who had moved here from Rutherford County. Merrill had a blacksmith shop on his plantation and also built the first community grist mill erected in this section. The Barnetts, father and sons, reared and trained in the old Boat Yard at Hamburg, were noted for their fine cabinet work and furniture making, - many examples of which are still to be found, well preserved and in splendid condition. The old secretary-table, with its stout money drawer, made for his own use by John Barnett, Sr., is still in use. Specimens of penmanship, on brittle stained paper, and faded ink, and the wording and spelling of ancient documents prove that most of the citizens who lived in the Crab Tree Creek community, and the children reared there has education far beyond the average of their time. Levi Anderson and his sons, who also came from Edgefield followed the profession of teaching, and that there were other tutors in the community is shown by old receipts for sums paid for Schooling. In 1827, Charles Barnett, (a son of John, Sr) executed a deed to E. Hightower and William Orr, trustees, for land whereon should be erected a school house and meeting house to be used by Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterians alike. The first record of lands bought by John Barnett, Sr., is on November 12, 1816, when he and Samuel King obtained 300 acres on Little River from Charles Lain. On January 27, 1821, he purchased 200 acres on Blythe Creek, east side of Little River, with the house and outhouses from Thomas Crumley, a deed witnessed by Robert Hamilton. It was only a year or two later that Loveday, a daughter of this neighbor Hamilton, married David Barnett, son of John, Sr.
This land and Boat Yard, sold to John Barnett Covington, was situated in a key position, in later development of this portion of South Carolina. Lying just across the Savannah River from Augusta, the village which developed there was later known as Hamburg, - a town which for many years sank into a state of lifelessness, and when later revived, was called North Augusta. On January 21, 1822, John Barnett Covington, in behalf of himself and his wife, and as guardian for Carolina Fair and John H. Fair, conveyed to Henry Shultz, for a consideration of $4750, a one-fourth interest in this land opposite the city of Augusta. Following this, the bridge leading from Augusta across the river was built, and occupied the original Boat Yard and house site of David Barnett. In what was first the old village of Hamburg, near the junction of the Dixie Highway and another highway, and about half a mile from the old Hamburg Bridge over the Savannah River, there is a handsome old residence, known as the James W. Jackson home, located on a V-shaped lot. When the settlement of Hamburg was in its early days, a graveyard occupied this site, - known as the Hall family burial plot, - a family closely connected with that of the Hammonds and Barnetts. As development progressed, the headstones were removed and stored under the Jackson house, from which they were later carried and thrown in the Savannah River. Search has failed to locate the graves of David Barnett and his wife, Elizabeth, and John Barnett, Senr., and his wife, - and it seems we must assume that they were interred in this spot, from which all trace of burial tombs has disappeared. In some of the early family records of the Edgefield District, the name of Barnett and Burnett appear to be the same, - when relating to marriage between Halls, Hammonds, and Barnetts-Burnetts. Abandonment of the old Boat Yard at Snow Hill, and sale of the home place by John Barnett Covington and others is closely related with history of transportation in the United States. It was from Charleston that the first railroad operating steam engines was built to Hamburg in 1830,- with a terminus near the old bridge built across the river at the David Barnett home and Boat Yard. *There is nothing to indicate its cause, but from about 1800, or somewhat earlier, until after 1810, there was a general exodus of citizens from Edgefield District through upper South Carolina and into that section of North Carolina reached by a route through what, in those days was known as Douthats Gap. This route is now the famous Caesars Head road, - which brought several families into the Crabtree Creek section of what was later to become Henderson County. Among those pioneer citizens was John Barnstt, Sr., with his wife, and if we may judge from the Census of 1790, a son, David, who is shown as a male of 2 years. His other sons, John, Jr., Charles, and Joseph probably were born after the family came to North Carolina. William Center, (whose family name later became Sentelle) came from the same area of South Carolina, with his wife, Elizabeth Stevens Center, and several children. With them was Solomon Osteen, who in 1808, was married to Nancy Center (Sentelle) who had been born in Edgefield District in 1789.* (the above 2 paragraphs looked like they were excerpts from another item but no reference was given. - dhs) The Barnett Family Continued: Thomas Osteen, father of the first Solomon among Henderson County residents, was a planter on the Savannah River and had been reared in Edgefield, where he married Sallie Williams. After his death, the widow married Edward Shipman, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, who lived on Little River.
