I recently posted an inquiry about Gehoida Barnett , born about 1804 in either South Carolina or possibly North Carolina. He moved to Hall County, Georgia about 1826. Subscriber , Donna Johnson, replied to the inquiry saying she was related to Gehoida through his daughter, Martha Barnett Thomason. I would like to correspond with this subscriber on the subject. My Great Grandfather , John Willis Barnett, born about 1845, was Gehoida's son and a brother to Martha Barnett, wife of James A. Thomason. I believe Gehoida was married twice, with my Great Grandfather being from the second marriage. I am interested in learning about Martha's line. My records show she and James had two children. One of these was a son, named G.W.(George Washington) Thomason. I have a family history sheet of James Thomason's ancestors, and going down through G. W.'s children. I would be interested in talking to someone who might have family pictures of James and Martha. I would be happy to share what I have on Gehoida and Martha with anyone and would appreciate any info they could offer. Mary Alice Jones

Hi Everyone: Just a note to let everyone know the DNA website at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com has been updated. Just click on the DNA link. There has been some surprising new results. We have a several new groups unrelated to one another. In the past we would have assumed they were somehow related but the DNA is telling us they are not. On the other hand other lines are showing they are related. So the project is being quite informative. Be sure to read the results page. There are links to Associated Surnames and Associated Places for each participant. There is also a Genetic Distance Page which shows the distance in genetic markers of one participant to another. For each participant there is a page showing that person's lineage. Each of these pages are intended to be helpful to anyone conducting Barnett research. Mark Barnett has set up a Barnett Forum where anyone can go and ask or comment on anything Barnett. That website is at http://www.barnettfamilytree.com/forum/ If you are a male Barnett please consider joining our test group. If you are a female Barnett or related to a Barnett try to find someone in your family who is a male still carrying the surname and have them test. You might consider getting some of your relatives together and sponsor someone of your line to take the test. The test is fairly expensive. It costs $99 for a 12 marker test, $171 for a 25 marker test and $239 for a 37 marker test. By joining with several others of your own lineage each of you could chip in and try to find someone who can take the test and pay for it so that participant does not have to front the money. By sponsoring your own person you would be assured of when you could get results rather than wait for someone to come out of the wood work. I sponsored my Finch cousin in the Finch test and we have several women in our group who sponsored their father, brother or other relative. One member upgraded from 12 makers to 37. His 12 marker results and his 26-37 came in but not his 13-25. I guess they are still coming. Evidently they are all separate test and the results get report individually. A couple others have ordered the upgrade. those results should come in soon. If you are in a group of other participants you might consider the 37 marker test to see how close you are related to the others. If you have not matched others it may not be as important to you at this time as it just compares the closeness of one person to another. I have tried to list participants in numerical order by the number of their kit. Since that is the way FTDNA does most of their lists I found it is best to use that methodology but it gets tricky when trying to update data. Let me know if you find any discrepencies. The website needs to be as accurate as possible. It takes a lot of time effort and concentration to work the website. More so on this website than on other websites as we have so many diffent participants and the results mean so much and are very intricut in how they are listed. So, enjoy! MIC
Hi Everyone: It is now a year after the last Texas legislative session drastically cut funds to the Texas State Library. That cut affected TexShare. The State Library is now trying to make an effort to maintain some of the databases on TexShare, specifically, Heritage Quest which is very valuable to genealogists. With a Texas library card a genealogist can use Heritage Quest from the home computer without having to actually go to their local library. Heritage Quest contains the whole US Census 1790-1930 plus index, Over 25,000 digitally scanned and fully searchable family and local history books, plus PERSI which is an index to thousands of genealogical periodicals published since the early 1800s. To keep Heritage Quest alive the TSL needs $243,000. They have requested libraries across the state subscribe to the database. The subscription is based on the population where the library is located and range from $500 for a town of 10,000 to $35,000 for cities with 1.5 Million. Since many libraries are in financial straights it is hoped societies, individuals and other organziations can help raise the funds in the name of , or in conjunction with, the library. It is a little late and with short notice but maybe we can pull it off. Contact the officers of any society in which you are a member. Have them contact the librarian of your local library. The librarian will be familiar with teh problem and will know the amount of their library subscription assesment. The librarian can suggest how and where genealogists and soccieties may contribute to the TexShare fund for your library. TexShare is a consortium. If the $243,000 can be raised Heritage Quest will be saved for another year. When I say consortium, I mean any library in the TexShare system will be able to access HQ no matter how much or little they paid into the fund. If the $243,000 is not funded TSL will have to renegotiate with HQ for another price and only libraries who pay the new fee will be able to access the database. This is called TexSelect. So, contact your local library. Your librarian will surely be aware of the situation. See what your subscription would be and try to work with others in yoru community to raise the funds to keep Heritage Quest available to all in Texas. I will reactivate the TexShare page on my website at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com as to post any new information. Check there periodically for any new news. Below is a portion of my unedited column published in the Houston Chronicle Saturday (April 10, 2004). It may be read online on the Chronicle website (death pages, of course) at http://www.legacy.com/houstonchronicle/LegacyHome.asp Scroll down and click on my name on the right side of the page. FUNDS SOUGHT FOR IMPORTANT DATABASE Funding of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission was cut deeply during last year's legislative season. Consequently, TexShare grants have suffered greatly and TSL has begun a pledge drive to retain Heritage Quest as one of the databases in the 2004-2005 TexShare database repetoire. Sponsored by the TSL TexShare is a rich collection of digital knowledge databases available to over 700 participating academic, public and clinical medicine libraries located across the state of Texas. One of those databases is Heritage Quest. HQ is a major genealogical and historical database available only on the Internet through library subscription. It is not available to individuals by private subscription. HQ subscriptions currently contain three important rich in genealogical and historical information databases. The first contains the complete United States Census and corresponding index, 1790 through 1930. The second contains Proquest's Genealogy and Local History Collection which consists of over 25,000 digitally scanned family and local history books each of which is every word searchable. The third is PERSI, a comprehensive subject and name index covering thousands of United States and Canadian genealogical periodicals published since the early 1800's. Included with any newly negotiated database will be the Sanborn Insurance Map Collection. In the near future ProQuest Newspaper Obituaries, the Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files and the Freedman's Bank Records are anticipated to be added to the HQ databases. The cost to TexShare for the HQ databases next fiscal year is $243,000. The TSL does not have the funds for HQ and is asking libraies across the state to contribute funds to cover the subscription. Estimated library subscription pledges are based on population and range from $500 for a town with a population of less than 10,000 people to $35,000 for cities with more than 1.5 Million people. Obviously Houston's suggested contribution would be $35,000. Not only is the TSL short of funds, so are the coffers of other libraries, including the Houston Public Library. With this in mind individuals and organizations are being asked to help by contributing to the Heritage Quest pledge drive. Contributions should be funneled through a TexShare stakeholder library usually one's local public library. In Houston contributions should be made through the Houston Public Library's Houston Library Board which will coordinate contributions. For additional information about donating to the Houston Library Board, contact Caroline Reeder at caroline.reeder@cityofhouston.net or by telephone at 832-393-1368. Time is of the essence. The HQ pledge drive has a deadline of May 1. If the monetary goal is not met the HQ databases will be converted to TexSelect whereby the databases will be available only to those libraries willing to pay to subscribe. Under the TexSelect method subscription prices will be higher than under the consortium negotiated reduced method used with TexShare.
I am still searching for my ggggrandfather Berry W. Barnett born abt. 1813 S.C. by 1834 he & wife Martha? married 1833 were in Georgia. Last I found him on 1880 censusin Etowah county Ala. Also looking for anything on his son William P. Barnett married Katherine Veal. Carolyn STEPHENSON
Fulton County, GA, at one time was part of DeKalb, Milton, and Cambell Counties. Check out these web pages for more information on Fulton County, Ga. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gafulton/toc.html Fulton Co, was Formed 1853 from DeKalb and Campbell counties. http://www.mindspring.com/~ednab/ (Milton County, GA, web page) http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacampbe/ (Campbell County, GA web page) Campbell County was formed by an act of the Georgia Legislature December 20, 1828 taking land from Carroll, Coweta, DeKalb, and Fayette Counties. In 1832 land from the Cherokee Land Lottery was added, for a total to about 192 square miles. On October 17, 1870 the land lying north of the river was taken along with some of eastern Carroll to form what is now Douglas County. The rest merged with Fulton on January 1, 1932. Campbell County was named in honor of Colonel Duncan G. Campbell. He and James Meriwether negotiated the Indian Springs Treaty in which the Creek Indian land was ceded on February 12, 1825. The County seat was Campbellton until 1870. It was then moved to Fairburn where it remained for the life of the county. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gadekalb/ (DeKalb County, Ga. web page) My Barnetts were in Gwinnett and Milton County Ga. As of now I don't have any information on Francis Marion Barnett, but this family has been hard to find anything. They keep changing Names. I will be more than happy to share what I have on them. George: While I can not answer your question you have some administrative problems to deal with. First, there was no Fulton County, GA until 1854. The land was there but it was in DeKalb County. Fulton was created in 1854 from DeKalb. It is possible your family was living in DeKalb County in 1840 you can see which Barnetts lived there then by checking teh 1840 census. Atlanta (now in Fulton County) did not even become a village until the late 1840's. It was not untill about 1849 when the train companies decided to create Terminus which is where Atlanta is today. It was the point where several train companies ended their train lines at what they called Mile Post 0. It became an important location by the time of teh Civil War. You should also be checking the 1850 census as it is the first to name all persons in the household. Your Francis Marion would be a 10 year old child in his father's household. I would look at all the counties from DeKalb eastward in Goegria to the South Carolina line-They were probably coming from the western area of SC-Pendelton-Spartanburg-Greenville counties would be a likely area. With a name like Francis Marion Barnett you are definitly looking for a Barnett family with South Carolina roots. You guy's ancestor likely was in the Revolution from SC and probably fought under Francis Marion. Shari: Why not give the information you have. Your question is terribly confusing. The index, if that is what you have, will not tell you much of anything. Actually, from the index you can't be real sure you even have the right guy. What you need is a copy of the actual pension application. 99% of the time the pension will not give the parents' names. However, it should say when and where the applicant was born, where he lived when he enlisted or was inducted, the units he served in, when he was released from active duty and where he lived when he got out of the service. When the applicant died his widow is likely to applied for a pension. His pension file might give his date of death but his widow's pension application, if there is one, would tell when he died, when and where they married and possibly have something about their children. So, if all you have is an index, you need the actual (copy of) the pension. Depending on which war you are referencing, a lot of the files are on microfilm. Knowing when and where an ancestor is born is helpful in finding out the name(s) of potential parents as it places your guy in a time and place to research potential parents and other relatives. I received some information on another Barnett family. We have been trying to connect with my John W. Barnett b. Nov. 1800 in Georgia. This is the new info. in case anyone else can help us... here it is. "June, All of my kinfolk came from Kentucky, although I did hear talk of one branch of the family going down to Florida, but no one seemed to know any details about him. There were 10 children in my dad's family, 6 boys and 4 girls. My granddad, Napoleon Lewis Barnett was County Judge of Pulaski County in Kentucky for a number of years. My Dad's youngest brother's name was John Worthington Parker Barnett, so I'm not sure how that might relate to your question about your John W. Barnett b. 1800 Georgia. All of my Dad's family has now passed on, but there are still alot of Barnetts running around back there in Somerset,Ky and surrounding areas. Neil Barnett" Thanks for any and all help. Marsha and other's. There were many Barnett's in NC and also( as mine were) in York Co. SC. The Bethel Church Yard Cem. started in 1700's I think and still being used today is on Line with Cemeteries of York Co SC. Many many Barnett's and connections bur there. Some names are; Adam's Patrick, Bigger's, McKenzie,Campbell/ and hundreds more. When I came upon it several yr's ago I copied it and put in a notebook but I been in a revamp of my small room Computor and Genealogy room so much is still in boxes. Send E mail to SCYork-L@rootsweb.com site after subscribing and ask for the link to the Cem's. It is very long so be prepared for a long time to check it. My Thomas and Martha ( Patrick) Barentt were bur there in late 1700's or early 1800's, Memory just now on dates. This Thomas is son of a Thomas b abt 1730 I think in NC and fa was immigrant from Londonderry , IRELAND. Maxine Wilton willma@sprynet.com
