Hello again!! OOOPS OOOPS I messed up, missed a page BACKUP to Robert Barnett and Elizabeth Condit Following information from U.S. Adjt. Gen, McCain: Robert Barnett served in Indian wars in 6th ( Barbour's ) Regiment of Kentucky Militia, from Sept 1. to Dec 23, 1812. Robert was married the second time in 1834 to Mrs Elizabeth Bennett who is buried beside him in an unmarked grave in Alexander Cemetery. There were no children by this marriage. Robert's old home place was inherited by my mother's father, grandpappy Bob and grandmammy Betsy, as the grandfather and step-grandmother were called, lived with Robert Emmett and family. Have heard mother speak of them often, and never heard her or anyone say anything in the step-grandmother's praise. She didn't seem to make herself very agreeable. The old house as I remember it seemed was across the road from the place I remember, the latter place having been built by grandfather Robert Emmett, when his two oldest children were quite small. It burned about the year 1911. Elizabeth Condit was a daughter of Uzal and Theodotia Prudden Conditt, was born in Morristown, New Jersey and prior to her marriage was school teacher. Her death was quite sudden and it was always thought she had been poisoned by one of the slaves. There is a genealogy of the Conditt family. I have seen a copy in the Newberry library, Chicago. The Condits are of Welsh extraction and the genealogy is quite an interesting work. The line is given as follows: Peter, Peter again, Joseph,Uzal,Elizabeth. John Condit. father of the first mentioned Peter, came from Wales, settled in New Jersey in 1678. This genealogy includes the above family and states that Elizabeth's husband, Robert Barnett, was born in Virginia. Robert Barnett was County Surveyor of Ohio County for thirty years. U.S. Census records for the year 1820 shows this Robert Barnett as a farmer between 26 and 45 and wife between 16 and 26 and 2 sons under 10 and 1 daughter under 10, and 2 slaves. Joseph Condit, Elvira Theodotia, Robert Emmett, Elizabeth C. are buried at Alexander Cemetery Robert's second wife, Mrs Elizabeth Allen Bennett, was a granddaughter of Col. Etnan Allen Robert's tombstone inscription shows he was born in Amherst County, Virginia March 24, 1784. He came to Kentucky from Virginia in 1788 with his father's family, according to records of his son Joseph appearing in Battle's and History of Kentucky. Besides several small parties and companies who joined the cavalry expeditions into the Indian territory, Ohio County raised three companies during the war of 1812. One accompanied General Samuel Hopkins up the Wabash River and the other Governor Isaac Shelby to the Battle of the Thames, and another was under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. The company under General Hopkins, commanded by Captain Robert Barnett, was thought to be one of the most reliable and well-disciplined in the army. It was selected and prepared for critical and dangerous occasions, but never met the enemy. Elizabeth Condit Barnett was a scholar, having been educated in the East. She was a school teacher. Elizabeth Condit's mother's name was Theodotia Pruden. so very sorry I messed up must be more careful Barbara Barnett Gartrell Barb, does this family belong to someone??????

Hello to all of you, to all who sent thank you's you are so welcome and to continue from yesterday on the family of Robert Emmett Barnett and his wife Amanda Phipps.. I ended with their son Ledru Rollin.... Victor Grant remained at home and looked after the farm, and with his mother welcomed the family gathering that was held each summer. It was great fun for all of us children--we had the run of the place. And such food: Always country ham, fried chicken, hot biscuits always, blackberry cobbler on a platter the size of a wagon bed, beans, peas, new potatoes and lettuce from the garden. If the hired girl complained of all the extra cooking we never heard of it. From the upstairs room where we slept the west window looked out upon the greenery of the maple trees, the north window looked out across the orchard on the other side of the Livermore Road, and to the south, where the farm was on a descending grade, we viewed the beautiful blue sky. Turkeys roosted in the tall trees on the east side of the house and occasionally be heard to gobble during the night. There was a delicious contentment about the place. Not long after his mother died, Victor went to Dermott, Arkansas, where Uzal was living. After a time he married Melissa May, sister of Morris's wife, and they operated a hardware store there. Their latter years were spent in Florida. Pauline, was a staunch character. One of her teachers said of her that she had the mind of a man. A friend of long ago in a recent letter referred to her as ( as a dear good mother ) She was that and much more. John Barnett was born and reared at Beda, where his father, David Lowey Barnett, had a log tobacco factory, where his sons learned to be excellent tobacconists. The well in the front yard of the Lowry Barnett home was a stopping place for the refreshment of man and beast. The family moved to Owensboro in 1889. Andrew Morris shared in the responsibility of looking after the farm. He and his wife lived at the home place for a time, then moved to his own land adjacent to the home place. After some years they moved into Hartford. Robert John learned telegraphy and was a railroad station agent at Millwood, in Grayson County, and later at Union City and Rivas, Tennessee near Memphis, on the Cotton Belt. He had lots of personality, was liked by everyone and his social circle included the leading people in each town where he was located. He was such a favorite with all the family that his visits home were triumphal. Alzien's husband, Joseph B. Rogers, was a Baptist preacher. He occupied pulpits in Hartford and at a couple of other churches in the county. In about 1895, 1897 0r? they moved to Moweaqua, Illinois., and finally at Chicago. Alzien, too was an indomitable spirit, made a good home for her family. Uzal taught all of his life. He taught at many schools in Ohio County and adjacent counties. He followed his brother, Ledru, to Arkansas in the late 1890's, taught at various places and was principal and superintendent at several places. His wives were Arkansas natives. To the end of his life he was interested in Ohio County and in everybody he knew there, corresponded with them, wrote letters to the paper. Barbara Barnett Gartrell Barb,

( Alexander Cemetery is located nearby ) In the division of his property at his death his son Robert acquired that laying on either side of the Livermore Road and abutting the Hartford-Owensboro Road, extending westward into the No Creek community. The portion immediately on the Hartford-Owensboro road was inherited by the son Robert E. and there the above family was born and reared Robert E. Barnett revered learning, and had a hobby of reading ancient history, which accounts for the names of three of his sons, Nester, Junius Brutus, and Ledru Rollin. He was anxious that his children be educated, and he sent his eldest son Elijah, to the state university at Lexington. All of the children after attending Alexander school, were sent to Hartford College. Four other sons went away to school -- Nester to medical school at Louisville, Junius to a college at East St. Louis, Illinois, Uzal and Ledru attended Purdue. Elijah was of a peculiar temperament. Never tried to do anything, although at one time was county surveyor. He was thrown from a horse and his knee was injured and he went about with the aid of a crutch and a cane. Alexander was a printer on the Hartford Herald for many years. His wife was the daughter of Rueben Anderson. Nestor located at Caneyville where he practiced medicine for many years. His wife was of that community, maiden name Whittinghill Junius did railroad work in Kansas, married his wife at Winfield, and soon moved to Los Angeles, California continuing in railroad work. Ledru became an ordained Methodist minister and preached around at various churches in Ohio County. He went to Arkansas in the late 1890's and homesteaded some land in the southwestern corner of the state, near Foreman. Besides farming he preached and taught school. He returned to Ohio County and married Sallie Hamilton, daughter of Carl Hamilton, of near Adaburg. During the last 25 years of their lives they operated a hotel at Batesville, in north Arkansas. enough for today will finish this tomorrow Barbara Barnett Gartrell Barb,
